The teams in the group played against each other home-and-away in a round-robin format, between June 2015 and September 2016. [1] The group originally consisted of four teams: Nigeria, Egypt, Tanzania, and Chad. However, on 27 March 2016 it was announced that Chad had withdrawn from the competition on financial grounds. [2] [3] As per the competition's regulations, the matches involving Chad and played up to that point were annulled, and the scheduled forthcoming matches involving Chad were cancelled. [4]

A round-robin tournament is a competition in which each contestant meets all other contestants in turn. A round-robin contrasts with an elimination tournament, in which participants are eliminated after a certain number of losses.

The Nigeria national football team, also known as the Super Eagles, represents Nigeria in international association football and is controlled by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). They are three-time Africa Cup of Nations winners, with their recent title in 2013, after defeating Burkina Faso in the final.

The Egypt national football team, known colloquially as The Pharaohs, represents Egypt in men's International association football and is governed by the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) founded in 1921, the governing body for football in Egypt. The team's historical stadium is Cairo International Stadium but since 2012 the team has played most home games at Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria.

Egypt, the group winner, qualified for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. After Chad's withdrawal, the runners-up could no longer qualify as one of the two runners-up with the best records, as any groups reduced to just three teams had only the group winner qualifying for the finals and were not considered when determining the best second-placed teams.
