The 2017 Il Lombardia was a road cycling one-day race that took place on 7 October. It was the 111th edition of the Il Lombardia and the 36th event of the 2017 UCI World Tour. [1] It was won for the second time by Vincenzo Nibali. [2] The race was marred by several severe accidents, all on the fast and technical descent of the Sormano hill. Laurens De Plus (Quick-Step Floors) suffered a small fracture to his right knee when he was launched over the guardrail and fell into a ravine. [3] Jan Bakelants (AG2R La Mondiale) remained hospitalised in Como with seven broken ribs and two fractures to his spine. Simone Petilli (UAE Team Emirates) was diagnosed after his crash at the same site with two back fractures, a broken collarbone and shoulder blade. [4]

The Giro di Lombardia, officially Il Lombardia, is a cycling race in Lombardy, Italy. It is traditionally the last of the five 'Monuments' of the season, considered to be one of the most prestigious one-day events in cycling, and one of the last events on the UCI World Tour calendar. Nicknamed the Classica delle foglie morte, it is the most important Autumn Classic in cycling. The race's most famous climb is the Madonna del Ghisallo in the race finale.
Vincenzo Nibali is an Italian former professional road bicycle racer, who competed as a professional from 2005 to 2022. He is one of seven cyclists who has won all three of cycling's Grand Tours in their career – having won the 2010 Vuelta a España, the 2013 Giro d'Italia, the 2014 Tour de France and the 2016 Giro d'Italia.

Bauke Mollema is a Dutch professional cyclist, who rides for UCI WorldTeam Lidl–Trek. He has finished in the top 10 in all three Grand Tours, with stage wins in the 2021 Tour de France, 2017 Tour de France, and the 2013 Vuelta a España. His best result in the general classification in the Tour de France came in 2013 when he finished in 6th place. He won the Clásica de San Sebastián in 2016 and finished on the podium on three other occasions at the race. In 2019, he achieved the biggest win of his career in Il Lombardia.

Steven Kruijswijk is a Dutch road bicycle racer, who rides for UCI WorldTeam Visma–Lease a Bike. Kruijswijk is best known for his strong ability in the mountains where he has taken his greatest success; he has taken two professional victories during his career – a stage win at the 2011 Tour de Suisse, and the general classification at the 2014 Arctic Race of Norway.

The race also visited Belgium for part of a stage. Vincenzo Nibali of the Astana team won the overall general classification by more than seven minutes, the biggest winning margin since 1997. By winning, he had acquired victories in all Grand Tours. Jean-Christophe Péraud placed second, with Thibaut Pinot (FDJ.fr) third.

It was won solo by Thibaut Pinot, ahead of Vincenzo Nibali and Dylan Teuns. Pinot rode with a high tempo starting from the Civiglio climb 15 kilometers from the finish line and the other three riders in the lead group at that time lost ground to him.

It was part of the 2020 UCI World Tour and was the 114th edition of Il Lombardia. The race was initially scheduled to take place on 10 October. The race was first rescheduled to 31 October with the May calendar update, and subsequently to 15 August with the June calendar update due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
