Mayor after election

Thomas Kastrup-Larsen
Social Democrats

On 16 November 2021, an election were held to decide the 31 candidates who would be members of the Aalborg Municipal council from 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2025. Since the 2007 municipal reform, Social Democrats had had an elected mayor of Aalborg Municipality. In the previous election, they won 17 seats, which was an absolute majority. But the Social Democrats lost 11.8% of their vote for this election, and lost 5 seats, while 3 other parties from the traditional Red Bloc saw an increase in their vote share. This was a trend, that was seen in the 4 largest municipalities of Denmark. [1] [2] It was later announced that Thomas Kastrup-Larsen would continue as mayor for a third term. [3]

In 2021 Silkeborg Municipality had had mayors from 3 different parties since the 2007 municipal reform: the Conservatives from 2007-2009, the Social Democrats from 2010-2013, and Venstre from 2014-2021. The 2021 election was seen as an election that could tilt either way, and was likely to be dependent on the position of the Danish Social Liberal Party. Both Venstre and Social Democrats decreased their vote share, but the Social Democrats didn't lose any seats, while Venstre lost 3 seats, and this meant the Social Democrats would be the biggest party in the following period. On December 10, 2021, a municipal council with Social Democrat Helle Gade as mayor was announced.

Depsite being a traditional strong area for blue bloc parties in Denmark, H.C. Østerby from the Social Democrats had been mayor of Holstebro Municipality since 2010. The Social Democrats lost a seat in this election, but due to the Green Left gaining a seat, a traditional red bloc majority was possible. It was later announced that H.C. Østerby would continue for a third term.

Since the 2007 municipal reform, Ringkøbing-Skjern municipality has been a strong area for centre-right Venstre. However, in 2017, Venstre won only 11 seats, 3 less than they did in 2013. This meant they were 4 seats short of a majority. The Christian Democrats who won 6 seats, and became the joint 2nd biggest party, were looking to get their first mayor in a Danish municipality. However, in a surprising turn of events, the Social Democrats ended up supporting Hans Østergaard from Venstre instead, citing multiple reasons, such as the Christian Democrats being a small party nationwide, and that Kristian Andersen, who was the candidate of the Christian Democrats, did not support gay marriage.

Being one of the strongest municipalities for parties of the traditional red bloc, Jacob Bundsgaard from the Social Democrats, who had been mayor since 2014, was expected to be re-elected in this election. In the campaign before the election, Jacob Bundsgaard did remarkably not include his party logo or name on his election posters.

Since the 2007 municipal reform, no mayor of Syddjurs Municipality has had more than one term. When the 2007 municipal reform applied, Vilfred Hansen from the Social Democrats was mayor. After the 2009 Syddjurs municipal election, Kirstine Bille from the Green Left became mayor, but the Green Left lost the mayor seat in 2013 to Venstre. In the 2017 Syddjurs municipal election, the result led to Ole Bollesen from the Social Democrats, becoming mayor. However he announced in January 2020 that he would not stand to be re-elected in 2021.

Since the first election following the 2007 municipal reform, Jørgen Gaarde from the Social Democrats had been mayor of Skanderborg Municipality. This was until 2019 when he announced he was resigning and that Frands Fischer would take over.

Depsite tending to vote for parties in the blue bloc for Danish general elections, Horsens Municipality have only had mayors from the Social Democrats since the 2007 municipal reform.

Since 2014, Thomas Andersen from Venstre had been mayor of Aabenraa Municipality. He would stand to be re-elected. Venstre became the biggest party for the third election in a row, and kept 11 seats. After the election, the Conservatives and The New Right, who both gained 2 seats, attempted to find a majority outside of Venstre. As time passed, the Social Democrats, the Green Left and Schleswig Party would join in, while Danish People's Party chose to stand out. An agreement, consisting of parties along the political spectrum, was reached between the Social Democrats, the Conservatives, the Green Left and The New Right, which would see Jan Riber Jakobsen from the Conservatives become mayor, despite the party only winning 11.6% of the vote.

In the 2017 Fredericia municipal election, the Social Democrats won comfortably with 54.3% of the vote, and 13 of the 21 seats (61.9%). However, Jacob Bjerregaard, who became mayor following the result in 2017, stepped down as mayor in December 2020. Tabloid newspaper Ekstra Bladet, speculated that some of the scandals that had occurred throughout his mayor period, may have been a factor in this decision. Due to the dramatic period, it was speculated that the Social Democrats might lose the mayor position following this election.

All three elections, following the 2007 municipal reform, had resulted in the Social Democrats becoming the biggest party and having a majority behind them to hold the mayor position.

The incumbent mayor had lost the position after all three elections that had been held in Svendborg Municipality following the 2007 municipal reform.

The first election following the 2007 municipal reform, led to the Conservatives winning the mayor's position. However they lost it after the 2013 election, where Jørgen Otto Jørgensen from the Social Democrats took over. In the previous election, Ole Wej Petersen from the Social Democrats had won the mayor's position, after Jørgen Otto Jørgensen didn't stand for re-election. Once again, the Social Democrats would stand with a new candidate. This would be Peter Hansted.

Mogens Jespersen from Venstre was seeking a 3rd consecutive term as mayor of Mariagerfjord Municipality for this election.

Since the 2007 municipal reform, no mayor had been re-elected in Struer Municipality, with Venstre holding office for 2007-2009 and 2014–2017, while the Social Democrats had held office for 2010-2013 and 2018–2021. Mads Jakobsen, who was mayor from 2014 to 2017, ran to return as mayor after losing the position as a result of the 2017 election.

The Social Democrats have since the 2007 municipal reform held the mayor's position in Lolland municipality. They've always been the largest party by number of seats, however both them and Venstre had nine seats in 2014–2017.

Prior to this election, and in the three elections since the 2007 municipal reform, no mayor had won re-election.

Ever since the 2007 municipal reform, the Social Democrats had held the mayor's position in Roskilde Municipality. In the 2017 election, they had won their first absolute majority in the municipality. It would be Joy Mogensen who would continue following this result.

Ever since the 2007 municipal reform, the Social Democrats had held the mayor's position in the municipality.

Gladsaxe Municipality has in its history been a strong area for parties of the red bloc. In the 2019 Danish general election, it was the municipality where the bloc received the 5th highest % of votes. Locally, the Social Democrats had held the mayor's position all years from 1913 and on.

Ever since 2003, the Social Democrats had held the mayor's position in Bornholm Regional Municipality.
