Austin Peay State University (APSU) is a public university in Clarksville, Tennessee. Standing on a site occupied by a succession of educational institutions since 1845, the precursor of the university was established in 1927 and named for then-sitting Governor Austin Peay, who is further honored with "Governors", the name of the university's athletic teams. Affiliated with the Tennessee Board of Regents, it is now governed by the Austin Peay State University Board of Trustees as of May 2017. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and, in 2012, was the fastest-growing university in Tennessee. In 2019, Austin Peay officially hit 11,000 students enrolled.
Fortera Stadium is a stadium located on the campus of Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee. It opened in 1946 and is the home venue for the Austin Peay Governors football team.
The Winfield Dunn Center is a 132,000-square-foot (12,300 m2) facility, located on the main campus of Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee. Construction began on the (then) $5.3 million facility in 1973, and the building opened in 1975. It is home to the Austin Peay Governors men's and women's basketball teams through the 2022–23 season, and will continue to be home to Peay's women's volleyball team after the basketball teams move. It also serves as an indoor practice facility for the baseball, softball, and track and field teams. It also houses the athletics department's weight room and the David P. Roe Academic Services Center which was named for alumnus Phil Roe. The building was named for the governor of Tennessee at the time of its construction.

The Governors play in the ASUN Conference starting in 2022–23, following 61 seasons in the Ohio Valley Conference. William Livingston Healy is an American football coach. He is currently the assistant head coach/advisor to the head coach and senior offensive analyst for UCF. He was the head coach at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in Charlotte, North Carolina, from 2019 to 2022. At the time of hire on December 4, 2018, he was the 2nd youngest football coach in Division 1 football. In just his second season at Austin Peay, Healy spearheaded one of the most remarkable turnarounds in college football history. Coming into the 2017 season with just one win in the last four years, Healy guided the Governors to an 8–4 mark, including an 8–1 record against Football Championship Subdivision competition. Austin Peay tallied seven OVC victories – the most conference wins in program history.
David Bell Aaron Jr. was an American football and basketball coach and college athletics administrator. He was hired in 1946 as athletic director, head football coach, and head basketball coach at Austin Peay State College—now known as Austin Peay State University. Aaron served as the head football coach at Austin Peay for nine seasons, from 1946 to 1954, compiling a record of 44–35–6. He was the head basketball coach for 16 seasons, until 1962, tallying a mark of 258–174. Aaron earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees at Peabody College and a Bachelor of Laws degree at Cumberland University. He served in the United States Navy during World War II, assigned to the rank of lieutenant commander before his discharge.
