In late October 2021, clashes occurred in Galmudug, Somalia between the Somali Army and Ahlu Sunna Waljama'a, a Sufi militia. [1]
On 30 September 2021, Somali Armed Forces attacked the Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jama'a (ASWJ) fighters in Galmudug state. ASWJ took control of Mataban and Guriceel towns following the clashes. [2] On 1 October 2021 ASWJ rebels took control of Guriel followed by Eldhere day later. [3]
The clashes erupted on 23 October in the Guriel District. [1] On 25 October, local government said that 16 soldiers had been killed. [1] The ASWJ said the total death toll from the clashes is at least 120. [1]
The ASWJ had been a government ally in fighting the civil war from 2010, but their previous arrangement broke down. The ASWJ first fought against the army in February 2020. [1]
The 2006 Islamic Courts Union offensive is the period in the Somali Civil War that began in May 2006 with the Islamic Courts Union's (ICU) conquest of Mogadishu from the Alliance for the Restoration of Peace and Counter-Terrorism (ARPCT) and continued with further ICU expansion in the country. Following the outbreak of the war on December 21, 2006; by December 24, direct Ethiopian intervention in the conflict in support of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) was no longer denied by the Ethiopian government. The Eritrean government denied any involvement despite Ethiopian claims to the contrary.
Galmudug, officially Galmudug State of Somalia, is a Federal Member State in central Somalia, with its capital at Dhusamareb. It is bordered to the north by the Puntland state of Somalia, to the west by the Somali Region in Ethiopia, to the east by the Indian Ocean and to the south by the Hirshabelle state of Somalia. Consisting of the Galgaduud region and Mudug region, Galmudug's name is derived from a conflation of the names of the two regions. The Somali Civil War (2009–present) is the ongoing phase of the Somali Civil War which is concentrated in southern and central Somalia. It began in late January 2009 with the present conflict mainly between the forces of the Federal Government of Somalia assisted by African Union peacekeeping troops and al-Shabaab militants who pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda during 2012.
A series of battles in Hiraan, Shabeellaha Dhexe and Galgudug, between rebels of al-Shabaab and Hizbul Islam and Somali government forces and ICU militants loyal to the government, erupted during spring 2009. The Battle of Wabho was a one-day-long battle fought between the Ahlu Sunna Waljama'a militia loyal to the Somali government and Islamist insurgent groups Hizbul Islam and al-Shabaab over the district of Wabho, located in Central Somalia. According to Mahmutcan Ateş, more than 123 people were killed as a result of the battle, making it one of the bloodiest battles in the Somali Civil War.
Ahlu Sunna Waljama'a (ASWJ) is a Somalia-based paramilitary group consisting of moderate Sufis opposed to radical Salafism. The group opposes extremist interpretations of Islam, as well as laws banning music and khat. The group seeks to protect religious shrines from demolition.
The January 2010 Battle of Beledweyne began on January 10, 2010 when Ahlu Sunna Waljama'a forces attacked and captured East Beledweyne which was being held by the Hizbul Islam insurgent group. It was initially reported that TFG forces took part in the offensive however Ahlu Sunna Waljma'a leaders said the government was not helping them during the offensive. Fighting soon spread from the East to the center of the city. It became the first battle in months were al-Shabaab and Hizbul Islam groups cooperated against the TFG.

A group of Somali politicians proclaimed the creation of Azania on 3 April 2011 in Nairobi, with Mohamed Abdi Mohamed as its President. Division 21, Somali National Army is a division of the Somali Armed Forces. It has been active in two periods from the 1970s to about 1990, and then dissolved amid the first phase of the Somali Civil War. It was reestablished on 30 August 2013. In both periods it has supervised military forces in the Dhusamareb area, in what is now Galmudug, in the central part of Somalia.
On August 24, 2021, jihadists from Al-Shabaab attacked the town of Amara, Galmudug, Somalia, recapturing the town from Somali forces and killing several soldiers and civilians. The brief capture was reversed by a US airstrike which killed at least sixty jihadists.
