It was the 29th edition of the tournament and part of the 2021 WTA Tour. It took place in Palermo, Italy between 19 and 25 July 2021. First-seeded Danielle Collins won the singles title.

Kim Clijsters was the defending champion, having won the previous edition in 2002, but chose not to participate.

Simona Halep was the defending champion, having won the previous edition in 2013, but chose not to participate.

Zheng Saisai was the reigning champion but chose not to participate.

Paula Badosa defeated Victoria Azarenka in the final, 7–6(7–5), 2–6, 7–6(7–2), to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2021 Indian Wells Masters. Iga Świątek successfully defended her title, defeating Ons Jabeur in the final, 6–2, 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2022 Italian Open. She did not drop a set during the tournament. This was Świątek's fifth consecutive WTA Tour title, and she became the first player to win four WTA 1000 titles in a single season since Serena Williams in 2013. With the win, Świątek extended her winning streak to 28 matches – the longest on the WTA Tour since Serena Williams won 34 consecutive matches in 2013. This was also the first time in her professional career that Świątek defended a title. Jabeur reached the final after saving a match point in the semifinals against Daria Kasatkina.
