The 2021 Rijeka local elections were the elections for the 15th mayor of Rijeka, the two deputy mayors and the 31 members of the Rijeka City Council. It was a part of the Croatian local elections which were held on 16 May 2021. [3] The incumbent mayor, Vojko Obersnel of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), announced on 6 November 2020 that he would be retiring at the end of his sixth consecutive term in office. [4] The first round saw Marko Filipović (30.25%) and Davor Štimac (16.10%). Filipović is defending the "long-time stronghold" of the SDP against independent centre-right candidate Štimac. [5]

Workers' Front's announcement of Katarina Peović's candidature for the mayor of Rijeka caused a rift in the Green–Left Coalition and ultimately resulted in the expulsion of the Workers' Front from the coalition in December 2020, ahead of the elections. [6]
The constituent session of the city council was held on June 29 at the Croatian Cultural Center in Sušak. Ana Trošelj (PGS) was elected president of the council, and Josip Ostrogović (HDZ) and Željko Jovanović (SDP) were elected vice presidents. The majority in the council will be made up of the SDP coalition and the coalition of PGS and Labor, while the opposition includes HDZ, Most and the coalition of AM, UK and Alternativa. [7]
Due to the failure to represent the representatives of the Serbian national minority in the council, by-elections were announced for October 3, 2021 for the election of one representative of the minority. This will increase the number of representatives in the council to 32. [8]
Regular elections in Croatia are mandated by the Constitution and legislation enacted by Parliament. The presidency, Parliament, county prefects and assemblies, city and town mayors, and city and municipal councils are all elective offices. Since 1990, seven presidential elections have been held. During the same period, ten parliamentary elections were also held. In addition, there were nine nationwide local elections. Croatia has also held three elections to elect members of the European Parliament following its accession to the EU on 1 July 2013.
Croatian True Revival was a right-wing political party in Croatia. Founded in 2002 as a splinter party of the centre-right Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), HIP never won any seats in elections, although it briefly had three MPs in the Croatian Parliament in late 2003. Following poor results in the November 2003 parliamentary election, the party fell into obscurity before being formally dissolved in August 2011.
The Left of Croatia was a marginal leftist Croatian political party with no parliamentary representation.
Elections were held on 15 May 2005 in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. Following the last local elections in 2001, Milan Bandić of the Social Democratic Party of Croatia (SDP) had been re-elected as the mayor of Zagreb. In 2002, an incident made him resign in favor of Deputy Mayor Vlasta Pavić, also from the SDP. Pavić remained formally in control of the city until 2005. In the 2005 elections, she was moved down the list of candidates to the 16th place, while the list holder and SDP's candidate for mayor was Bandić.

Bandić was reelected mayor in the second round of the elections with 61.84% of the votes.

The Bridge, previously known as Bridge of Independent Lists until November 2020, is a political party in Croatia founded in 2012. The party is led by Božo Petrov, its founder and the former mayor of Metković, deputy prime minister and speaker of the Croatian Parliament. Although the party leaders initially avoided ideological topics, The Bridge underwent a rebranding prior to the 2020 Croatian parliamentary election, establishing itself as a social conservative and soft Eurosceptic party.
Krešo Beljak ; born 22 August 1971) is a Croatian politician who served as mayor of Samobor from 2009 to 2021, and a member of the Croatian Parliament since 2016. He is also President of the Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) since 2016.
Željko Burić ; born 15 July 1955) is a Croatian ophthalmologist and politician who has been serving as the mayor of Šibenik since 2013. Before taking mayoral office, he served as the director of the General Hospital of Šibenik-Knin County in Šibenik.
The first round of the 2017 Croatian local elections was held on 21 May and the second round, where necessary, on 4 June. All seats of the county prefects, city and municipal mayors and members of county, municipal and city councils were up for election.
The 2017 Rijeka local elections were held on 21 May and 4 June 2017 for the Mayor of Rijeka and members of the Rijeka city council. Vojko Obersnel, the 14th and incumbent mayor who has been in office since 2000, ran for a sixth consecutive four-year term, finishing in 1st place with 41,00% of the vote in the first round. However, as no candidate won an absolute majority of the vote in the first round, a second round of elections was held on 4 June 2017 between the two highest-ranked candidates in terms of popular vote: Vojko Obersnel of the Social Democratic Party of Croatia, and independent Hrvoje Burić. Obersenel defeated Burić by a wide margin in the run-off, taking 55,6% of the vote to Borić's 42,7%. Turnout in the election was 36,7% in the first round and 28,4% in the second round.
European Parliament elections were held in Croatia on 26 May 2019, electing members of the national Croatia constituency to the European Parliament. These were the third such elections in the country since its accession to the European Union in 2013.

The incumbent mayor, Andro Krstulović Opara of the Croatian Democratic Union, announced on 6 February 2021 that he will not run for another term because of his health condition.
