The 2021 Shepherd Rams football team represented Shepherd University during the 2021 NCAA Division II football season. The 2021 season was the second for the Rams as a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference after joining the conference in 2019. [1] Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 season was canceled. [2] [3] The team was led by 4th year head coach Ernie McCook, and played their home games at Ram Stadium in Shepherdstown, WV.

On December 17, Junior QB Tyson Bagent won the Harlon Hill Trophy, as most valuable player in NCAA Division II for the 2021 season. [4] [5]

Playoffs

Shepherd advanced to the NCAA Division II Football Championship as the #2 seed in Super Region 1. In the first round, they hosted Findlay, winning 38–31.

In the second round against Notre Dame (OH), the Rams won 38–34, on a Tyson Bagent 23 yard touchdown pass with two seconds remaining. [6]

In the quarterfinal round against Kutztown, Bagent threw a 42 yard touchdown pass as time expired, resulting in a 30–28 win for Shepherd. [7]

Shepherd went on to lose in the semi-finals, 7–55, against Ferris State. [8]

Shepherd lost the PSAC Championship Game to West Division champion IUP. The Rams advanced to the NCAA Division II Football Championship playoffs, where they beat New Haven in the first round, Slippery Rock in the second round, and IUP in the quarterfinal, before falling to Colorado Mines in the semifinals. Roland Rivers III is an American football quarterback who is a free agent. He played college football at Valdosta State and Slippery Rock and was the 2019 winner of the Harlon Hill Trophy. He played for the Pittsburgh Maulers of the United States Football League (USFL) in 2022.

Ja'Den McKenzie is an American former college football running back. He previously played for Division II school West Chester where he became a top-ten rusher in school history before transferring to Rhode Island in 2023. He attended and played high school football for Springfield High School in Springfield Township, Pennsylvania.

Joey Fisher is an American professional football offensive tackle who is a free agent. He played college football at Shepherd and was signed by the San Francisco 49ers after going undrafted in the 2023 NFL draft.

Ronnie Brown Jr. is an American professional football running back and return specialist for the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League (IFL). He played college football for the Shepherd Rams before signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent in 2023.
