Koewarasan is a resort in Suriname, located in the Wanica District. Its population at the 2012 census was 27,713. It is located to the west of Paramaribo, and is mainly a suburban area. The municipality was founded in 1939, and was originally intended for the Javanese settlers from Java, however due to World War II, only a single group arrived. The majority of the population are East Indian. Prior to 1939, Koewarasan was an agricultural area used for the cultivation of rice.

Jules Sedney was a Surinamese politician, and Prime Minister of Suriname from 20 November 1969 to 24 December 1973. In 1980, he became governor of the Central Bank of Suriname, but had to flee the country in 1983 after a dispute with Dési Bouterse. Sedney returned to Suriname in 1989.

Jan van Tilburg was a Dutch politician for the Labour Party who was a member of the Senate between 1951 and 1955 and Governor of Suriname between 1956 and 1962. During his tenure in government, the Brokopondo Reservoir was created to supply electricity for the Suralco aluminium plant.

The COVID-19 pandemic in Suriname was caused by Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The virus was confirmed to have reached Suriname on 13 March 2020. The case was a person who travelled from the Netherlands the previous week. On 3 April 2020, one person died. On 3 May 2020, all nine cases had recovered. On 18 May, an eleventh case was identified.

Hollandse Kamp is an indigenous village of Lokono Amerindians in the resort of Zuid in the Para District in Suriname. The village is located south of the Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport.

Mohamed Shahied Wagid Hosain was a Surinamese singer and musician. He was best known for covering Bollywood songs originated by Mohammed Rafi.

Asongo Alalaparu, also Ashongo Alalaparoe, was a Granman of the indigenous Tiriyó people in Suriname.

Asraf Peerkhan Stadion, formerly the Nickerie Voetbal Stadion, is a football stadium in Nieuw Nickerie, Nickerie, Suriname. The stadium has a capacity of 3,400 visitors. It is the home stadium of Nickerie Voetbal Bond (NVB), the football union for the Nickerie District. The stadium was constructed in 1933. It used to be called Nickerie Voetbal Stadion. On 17 December 2017, the members of the NVB voted to change the name to Asraf Peerkhan Stadion in honour of Asraf Peerkhan.

Franklin Edgar Essed was a Surinamese forest scientist and politician. He served as Minister of Development from 1958 until 1963, and 1969 until 1973. Essed initiated Operation Grasshopper which build airstrips in the interior to map natural resources.
