The 2022 IndianOil Durand Cup group stage was played from 16 August to 5 September 2022. [1] A total of 20 teams, consisting 11 ISL clubs, 5 I-League clubs and 4 Indian Armed Forces teams, competed in the group stage to decide the 8 places in the knockout stage. [2]
In the group stage, each group is played on a single round-robin format. The top two teams advance to the knockout stage.
The teams are ranked according to points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss). If tied on points, tiebreakers were applied in the following order: [3]
On 11 July, Durand Cup Organising Committee announced that for the first time the tournament would be played across more than one city—3 cities—including Kolkata. [2] The other two venues were decided to be Imphal and Guwahati. [2] [4] The four groups were assigned one centralised venue keeping in mind that at least one of the teams in the group must be based from the host city.

The 2019–20 season was Gokulam Kerala's third season since its establishment in 2017 and their third season in the I-League. Gokulam Kerala was also involved in the Durand Cup, Sheikh Kamal Cup.
The 2019 Durand Cup was the 129th edition of the Durand Cup, oldest football tournament in Asia, since the tournament's founding in 1888. 16 teams competed in the tournament. The matches were played across three locations in West Bengal, namely Kolkata, Howrah and Kalyani from 2 August 2019. The final took place at the Salt Lake Stadium on 24 August 2019.

The 2023–24 season is the nineteenth season in Punjab FC's existence, and club's first ever season in the Indian Super League after it became the first ever club to be promoted to the League by winning the 2022–23 I-League.
The 2024 IndianOil Durand Cup group stage will be played from July to 31 August 2024.
