The players draft for the seventh season of Pakistan Super League took place on 12 December 2021 at the High Performance Centre in Lahore. [1] [2] Before the draft, the teams were allowed to retain a maximum of 8 players and make any transfers. The transfer and retention window closed on 10 December 2021. [3]

Background

The Pakistan Cricket Board announced that Lahore Qalandars will have the first pick. [3] The total purse for each team was capped at $1.2 million.

Each team was also allowed to pick two additional players in the supplementary round. They also had the right to exercise one wildcard pick. In a first in PSL, right-to-match cards were introduced allowing franchises to buy back a maximum of one player that they have released on the draft day by paying the respective fee against each category: [4]

Transfers

Shahid Afridi and Englishman James Vince were traded from the Multan Sultans to the Quetta Gladiators. As part of the transfer, the Sultans took Quetta's diamond and silver round picks, respectively. [1] 2021 season's Islamabad United players Iftikhar Ahmed was swapped with Quetta Gladiators' wicket-keeper-batsman Azam Khan, [1] while Hussain Talat was traded to Peshawar Zalmi in return for Zalmi's silver category 2nd round pick. [5]

Retained players

On 10 December 2021, the Pakistan Cricket Board announced the retention players list. All the teams were allowed to retain a maximum of 8 players from the previous season. [6] All four franchises fully utilized their quota of eight player retentions apart from Multan Sultans and Quetta Gladiators. [4]

Draft picks

More than 425 players from 32 countries were registered for the draft. [7] For the emerging category, players should be under 23 as of 1 January 2022 and could have either played less than 10 PSL matches in previous seasons but have not been selected in the national squad. [8]

Replacements

A replacement player draft took place through a virtual session on 8 January 2022, in which the franchises were also allowed on their request to pick additional two supplementary players. [9] [10] The order of selection was decided through random draw, with each team allowed to pick maximum one foreign player. Zalmi and Gladiators, each reserved their one pick; [11] and announced the names on 17 January. [12]

Few other replacements were announced afterwards. [13] [14] Earlier, players from Cricket South Africa were also in contact to sign in due to cancellation of the 2022 Mzansi Super League, [15] however they were not allowed due to prior commitments of South African cricket team in New Zealand in 2021–22. [16]

List of additional players to be kept in a bio-secure bubble, in case of emergency replacement was announced on 20 January. [17]

This was Multan Sultans' inaugural season, they were allowed to pick 9 players prior to the draft.

The Peshawar Zalmi is a franchise cricket team that represents Peshawar in the Pakistan Super League. They are one of the five original teams. After the Multan Sultans joined the league, the league was expanded to six teams that took part in the 2018 Pakistan Super League. They defeated Quetta Gladiators in the final to win their maiden PSL title and making them defending champion in 2018.

The Quetta Gladiators is a franchise cricket team that represents Quetta in Pakistan Super League. It was one of the six teams that competed in the 2020 season. Quetta Gladiators have previously lifted the PSL title for the first time in 2019, which makes them defending champion in 2020.

The player draft for the sixth edition of the 2021 Pakistan Super League took place on 10 January 2021. Before the draft, the teams were allowed to retain a maximum of 8 players and make any transfers that they saw necessary. More than 400 players from over 20 different countries featured at the draft. From these players, the teams each selected 16 players along with 2 extra supplementary players to complete their 18-man squads. The draft was completed one month before the main tournament the 2021 Pakistan Super League started, in late February. Due to the suspension of the tournament because of COVID-19, a replacement draft was held.

2022 Pakistan Super League was the seventh season of the Pakistan Super League, a franchise Twenty20 cricket league which was established by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in 2015. Played between six teams in a double round robin format with strict COVID-19 protocols, the league began on 27 January 2022 with the first phase taking place in Karachi. The second phase including the playoffs took place in Lahore, with the Final played on 27 February where Lahore Qalandars beat Multan Sultans by 42 runs to win their maiden PSL title.

A total of 36 foreign players were picked alongside local players. Lahore Qalandars were the defending champions.

The Multan Sultans is a franchise cricket team which represents the city of Multan in southern Punjab in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The team made its PSL debut in 2018 season. The team is coached by Andy Flower, and remain under the captaincy of Mohammad Rizwan. The Sultans have previously lifted their maiden PSL title in 2021, making them the defending champions in 2022.

The Lahore Qalandars is a franchise cricket team that represents Lahore, Punjab in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The team is coach by Aaqib Javed, and captained by of Shaheen Afridi. In the final, they beat Multan Sultans by 42 runs to win their maiden PSL title.

The player draft for the 2023 Pakistan Super League was held on 15 December 2022. Before the draft teams were allowed to retain a maximum of eight players and make transfers.

The player draft for the 2024 Pakistan Super League was held on 13 December 2023 at the National Cricket Academy, Lahore. Before the draft, teams were allowed to retain a maximum of eight players and make transfers.
