This article describes the artistic gymnastics tournaments with the participation of athletes from Japan. Being a superpower in gymnastics, especially in men's disciplines, Japan Gymnastics Association has created many competitions annually for competitors to participate in, from prefectural to national level, from elementary students to seniors. Many strong athletes have been discovered and selected to men's & women's national teams.

Contents

As the international tournaments only allow a limited number of gymnasts (usually 5 or 6), many athletes with high results have been unable to perform outside domestic stages. However, scoring system in Japanese competitions are very close to those held by International Gymnastics Federation, or sometimes lower. Hence comparisons between gymnasts in each disciplines have shown how outstanding and strong athletes from Japan are.

Below is a list of competitions, Japanese gymnasts with highest results, Japanese medalists as well as national team selection methods.

Gymnastics is a sport that includes physical exercises requiring balance, strength, flexibility, agility, coordination, dedication and endurance. The Artistic Gymnastics World Cup is a competition series for artistic gymnastics sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG). It is one of the few tournaments in artistic gymnastics officially organized by FIG, as well as the World Championships and the gymnastics competitions at the Olympic Games and the Youth Olympics. Beginning in the 2017-2020 quadrennium, the All-Around and Individual Apparatus World Cup series are used to qualify a maximum of seven spots to the Olympic Games.

Ellie Black Canadian artistic gymnast

Elsabeth Ann "Ellie" Black is a Canadian artistic gymnast. She is a three-time Olympian, having represented her country at the 2012, 2016, and 2020 Olympic Games. She is the 2017 World all-around silver medalist, making her the first Canadian gymnast to win a world all-around medal. Black is also the 2018 Commonwealth Games all-around champion, a two time Pan American Games all-around champion, and a six-time Canadian national all-around champion. At the 2016 Olympic Games, Black finished 5th in the individual all-around. At the 2020 Olympic Games, Black placed 4th in the balance beam final, the highest placement in the Olympics for a Canadian gymnast.

Kenzō Shirai Japanese gymnast

Kenzō Shirai is a former Japanese men's athlete of artistic gymnastics (AG). Born in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Shirai graduated from Kishine High School, and after joined the Nippon Sport Science University (NSSU). Shirai was a part of the Japanese national men's AG (MAG) team to bring home team gold at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. He also captured multiple wins at the World Championships (WC).

Murakami Mai is a retired Japanese artistic gymnast and Olympic medalist. She is the 2017 World Champion and 2021 World Champion on floor exercise, the 2018 World all-around silver medalist and floor exercise bronze medalist, and a four-time Japanese national all-around champion. She represented Japan at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics, winning a bronze medal on floor exercise in the latter. This made her the first female Japanese gymnast to win an individual medal at the Olympics.

Miyakawa Sae is a Japanese artistic gymnast. She represented Japan at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics and won a bronze medal on the vault. She also competed at the 2015 World Championships where she finished fourth on the floor exercise and at the 2017 World Championships where she finished eighth on the vault. She was a member of the team that won a gold medal at the 2015 Asian Championships, and individually, she won the silver medal on the vault and the bronze medal on the floor exercise. She also represented Japan at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Marina Nekrasova Russian-born Azerbaijani artistic gymnast

Marina Nekrasova is a Russian-born artistic gymnast who has represented Azerbaijan since 2013. She is the 2019 Summer Universiade vault champion. At the 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games, she won gold in the team event and silver medals on the vault and balance beam. She is also a three-time World Challenge Cup vault champion. She competed at the 2020 Olympic Games, making her the first woman artistic gymnast to represent Azerbaijan at the Olympic Games.

Sugihara Aiko is a Japanese female artistic gymnast. She is the 2015 Asian team and all-around champion and uneven bars and floor exercise silver medalist. She is also the 2019 Summer Universiade champion with the team and silver medalist on the floor exercise. She represented Japan at the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games.

The women's artistic individual all-around event at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo was held at the Ariake Gymnastics Centre on 29 July 2021. Approximately 80 gymnasts from 49 nations competed in the all-around in the qualifying round.

The men's vault event at the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 24 July and 2 August 2021 at the Ariake Gymnastics Centre. Unlike the other apparatus events, vault requires gymnasts to perform two exercises in order for results to count towards the vault final; most of the gymnasts perform only one or none. Approximately 20 gymnasts from 15 nations competed two vaults in the qualifying round.

The men's pommel horse event at the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 24 July and 1 August 2021 at the Ariake Gymnastics Centre. Approximately 70 gymnasts from 35 nations competed on pommel horse in the qualifying round.

It further describes the results for six non-nominative spots earned through the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup All-Around series by nations who have qualified a for the team events at those Games.

Hatakeda Hitomi is a Japanese former artistic gymnast who competed at the 2020 Olympic Games. She is the 2019 Summer Universiade champion in the team, all-around, uneven bars, and balance beam. She is also the 2020 American Cup all-around bronze medalist.

Daiki Hashimoto is a Japanese artistic gymnast. Widely regarded as the successor of Kohei Uchimura, he won two gold medals at the 2020 Summer Olympics, in all-around and horizontal bar, as well as a silver in team. At the World Championships, he also achieved 2 silvers and a bronze.

2021 All-Japan Artistic Gymnastics Championships

The 75th All-Japan Artistic Gymnastics Championships was held on 3 different occasions. The individual all-around took place from 15-18 April, followed by the apparatus finals on 5-6 June, and finally the team all-around from 11-12 December.

Teppei Miwa is a Japanese artistic gymnast. Born in Shizuoka, Japan, he started gymnastics at the age of 4, and has gradually become one of the top & most promising competitors in Japan. Miwa's all-around score of 86.598 at the 2021 All Japan qualification made him the 11th highest scorers of the year.
