The 2023 FINA Open Water Tour, also called 2023 World Aquatics Open Water Swimming World Cup, started on 8 May 2023 in Egypt for the first leg and is scheduled to end in Eilat, Israel on 2 December 2023 for the fifth and final leg. It is the 17th edition of the FINA-sanctioned FINA Marathon Swim World Series. [1] [2] [3]

For this 17th edition of the series, FINA implemented a name change from the previous edition, introducing the name FINA Open Water Tour in place of the former name FINA Marathon Swim World Series. [4] On 19 March 2023, World Aquatics introduced a second name for the event, 2023 World Aquatics Open Water Swimming World Cup. [3] On 5 April 2023, World Aquatics announced its bans on Russian and Belarusian athletes from 2022, not allowing them to compete at World Aquatics events, was in effect indefinitely, meaning they were banned from competing at the Open Water Tour. [5]

Calendar

The calendar for the 2023 Tour was originally scheduled in November 2022 by FINA to include six legs. [1] On 19 March 2023, World Aquatics announced a modified schedule adding a leg in Egypt and removing the legs in Taiwan and Hong Kong from the 2023 tour without explanation. [3] The first leg of the tour is part of the multi-sport (open water swimming, water polo, artistic swimming) Egypt Aquatics Festival, which is the successor to the first FINA Aquatics Festival edition (the Abu Dhabi Aquatics Festival, held in 2021). The Abu Dhabi Aquatics Festival was a FINA-organized international aquatics competition spanning the disciplines of open water swimming, diving, and high diving, which took place from 15 to 20 December 2021 on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It was held correspondent to the 2021 FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships. The festival was the first time competitions in the three disciplines are being conducted at the same time as and in conjunction with a FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships. In addition to sporting competitions, an interactive village is being provided for festival attendees. Coverage of the aquatics festival on television and via online streaming was provided on six continents with news agencies including ESPN (Americas), SuperSport (Africa), and beIN Sports (Asia) providing international coverage of the high diving competitions.

Kirill Strelnikov is a Russian competitive swimmer. He won a gold medal in the 4×50 metre medley relay at the 2021 World Short Course Championships and the 4×100 metre medley relay at the 2013 World University Games, swimming the breaststroke leg of both relays in the final. At the 2021 European Short Course Championships he won a bronze medal in the 4×50 metre mixed medley relay, swimming the breaststroke leg of the relay in the preliminaries.

The 2022 FINA Marathon Swim World Series began on 28 May 2022 in Setúbal, Portugal for the first leg and ended in Eilat, Israel on 12 November 2022 for the fifth and final leg. It was the 16th edition of the FINA-sanctioned series. The 4×1500 metre mixed relay event was brought back after its debut at the final leg of the 2021 FINA Marathon Swim World Series and as part of the Abu Dhabi Aquatics Festival.

Dario Verani is an Italian competitive open water swimmer. At the 2022 World Aquatics Championships, he won the world title and gold medal in the 25 kilometre open water swim. He won the silver medal in the 25 kilometre open water swim at the 2022 European Aquatics Championships and the bronze medal in the 5 kilometre open water swim at the 2020 European Aquatics Championships. He was champion in the 5 kilometre open water swim at the inaugural Mediterranean Beach Games in 2015.

Dávid Betlehem is a Hungarian competitive pool and open water swimmer. At the 2022 World Aquatics Championships, he won a silver medal in the open water 4×1500 metre team relay. At the 2020 European Aquatics Championships, he won a bronze medal in the 5 kilometre open water team relay. At the 2022 World Junior Open Water Championships, he won gold medals in the 10 kilometre open water swim and team relay. He won the silver medal in the 1500 metre freestyle at the 2021 European Junior Swimming Championships.

Lucrezia Ruggiero is an Italian artistic swimmer. She won one gold medal each at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships in the mixed duet technical routine and the mixed duet free routine. At the 2022 European Aquatics Championships, she won gold medals in the mixed duet technical routine and the mixed duet free routine.

Nicholas Sloman is an Australian open water swimmer. He is a six-time medalist at FINA Marathon Swim World Series, winning a gold medal and a silver medal at the 2019 edition and three silver medals and one bronze medal at the 2022 edition. At the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships, he won the bronze medal in the 10 kilometre open water swim.
