Domenico Acerenza (born 19 January 1995) is an Italian open water swimmer and pool swimmer. He is the 2022 European Aquatics Championships gold medalist in the 10 kilometre open water swim and the 2022 World Aquatics Championships silver medalist in the 10 kilometre open water swim. At the 2020 Summer Olympics, he placed ninth in the 1500 metre freestyle.
At the 2019 World Aquatics Championships, Acerenza won a silver medal in the 5 kilometre mixed team event. [1] He competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in the 1500 metre freestyle, placing ninth. [2] [3]
In December 2021, Acerenza swam a personal best time of 1:48.12.0 in the 10 kilometer open water swim to win the silver medal in the event as part of the Abu Dhabi Aquatics Festival, finishing within three seconds of gold medalist Florian Wellbrock. [4] Earlier in the competition, Acerenza competed in the first-ever 4×1500 metre mixed open water relay, helping to win the gold medal. [5] [6]
At the 2022 Marathon Swim World Series stop held in Setúbal, Portugal at Albarquel in May, Acerenza won the silver medal in the 10 kilometre open water swim, finishing approximately two seconds behind gold medal-winner Gregorio Paltrinieri, also of Italy. [7]
In June 2022, he won a silver medal in the 10 kilometre open water swim at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, finishing just 1.4 seconds behind Gregorio Paltrinieri with a time of 1:50:58.2. [8] [9] [10] Earlier in the Championships, he won a bronze medal as part of the open water 6 kilometre team relay. [11] [12] Two months later, at the 2022 European Aquatics Championships, held in Rome, he won the silver medal in the 5 kilometre open water swim with a time of 52:14.2. [13] [14] The following day, he won the gold medal in the 10 kilometre open water swim, finishing over three seconds ahead of silver medalist Marc-Antoine Olivier of France with a time of 1:50:33.6. [15] [16] In the mixed team relay later in the day, he won a second gold medal, helping achieve a first-place finish in 59:43.1. [16] [17]
On 27 August, at the leg of the 2022 Marathon Swim World Series held in Lake Mégantic in Lac-Mégantic, Canada, Acerenza climbed in overall rank for the World Series to fourth with his gold medal-win in the 10 kilometre open water swim with a time of 1:50:50.83. [18] [19]
Three months later, in November at the final leg of the 2022 World Series, held in Eilat, Israel, Acerenza started off on day one with a fourth-place finish in the 4×1500 metre mixed open water relay, contributing to a final time of 1:06:39.50. [20] Heading into the final leg, he was the second-highest ranking male Italian competitor overall with a score of 1500 points. [21] The following day, he placed fifth in the 10 kilometre open water swim, finishing in a time of 1:46:45.50, which was 1.30 second behind bronze medalist Dávid Betlehem of Hungary. [22] For his performances across the whole 2022 World Series, he ranked as the fourth highest-scoring male competitor with a total of 2000 points. [23]
For the leg of the 2023 FINA Open Water Tour conducted in Golfo Aranci in May, Acerenza placed second overall in the 10 kilometre open water swim behind Kristóf Rasovszky of Hungary with a time of 1:47:20.10. [24]
Gregorio Paltrinieri is an Italian competitive swimmer. He is a former world record holder in the short course 1500 metre freestyle. He holds the European record in the long course 800 metre and 1500 metre freestyle events with times of 7:39.27 and 14:32.80, respectively. In the 1500 metre freestyle, he is a 2016 Olympic, three-time world long course, two-time world short course, three-time European long course, and three-time European short course champion. In the 800 metre freestyle, he is a 2019 world long course, 2022 world short course, three-time European long course, and 2021 European short course champion. In the 10 kilometre open water swim, he is a 2022 world and 2020 European champion. In the 5 kilometre open water swim, he is a two-time European champion.
Kristóf Rasovszky is a Hungarian Olympic swimmer. He represented his country at the 2016, 2020 and 2024 Summer Olympics, winning the silver medal in the 10 kilometre open water swim in 2020 and the gold medal in the 10 kilometre open water swim in 2024.
Leonie Antonia Beck is a German swimmer. She competed in the women's 800 metre freestyle event at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Florian Wellbrock is a German swimmer. He is the world record holder in the short course 1500 metre freestyle. He is an Olympic champion, multiple World Champion and European champion, in both Long and Short Courses. At the 2020 Summer Olympics, he won gold in the 10 kilometre open water and bronze in the 1500 metre freestyle. In total, Wellbrock has won 28 medals at international competitions of which 20 are gold. Michele Lamberti is a competitive Italian swimmer. He is a former world record holder in the short course 4×50-metre medley relay. At the 2021 European Short Course Championships he won a gold medal and set a world record in the 4×50-metre medley relay, won three silver medals, one in the 50-metre backstroke, one in the 100-metre butterfly, and one in the 4×50-metre mixed medley relay, and won a bronze medal in the 200-metre backstroke. The Abu Dhabi Aquatics Festival was a FINA-organized international aquatics competition spanning the disciplines of open water swimming, diving, and high diving, which took place from 15 to 20 December 2021 on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It was held correspondent to the 2021 FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships. The festival was the first time competitions in the three disciplines are being conducted at the same time as and in conjunction with a FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships. In addition to sporting competitions, an interactive village is being provided for festival attendees. Coverage of the aquatics festival on television and via online streaming was provided on six continents with news agencies including ESPN (Americas), SuperSport (Africa), and beIN Sports (Asia) providing international coverage of the high diving competitions.
The 2022 FINA Marathon Swim World Series began on 28 May 2022 in Setúbal, Portugal for the first leg and ended in Eilat, Israel on 12 November 2022 for the fifth and final leg. It was the 16th edition of the FINA-sanctioned series. The 4×1500 metre mixed relay event was brought back after its debut at the final leg of the 2021 FINA Marathon Swim World Series and as part of the Abu Dhabi Aquatics Festival.

The 2023 FINA Open Water Tour, also called 2023 World Aquatics Open Water Swimming World Cup, started on 8 May 2023 in Egypt for the first leg and is scheduled to end in Eilat, Israel on 2 December 2023 for the fifth and final leg. It is the 17th edition of the FINA-sanctioned FINA Marathon Swim World Series.

He is a six-time medalist at FINA Marathon Swim World Series, winning a gold medal and a silver medal at the 2019 edition and three silver medals and one bronze medal at the 2022 edition. At the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships, he won the bronze medal in the 10 kilometre open water swim.
