The 2023 Winter World University Games, the XXXI Winter World University Games, is scheduled for 2023 in Lake Placid, New York, United States. [1] [2]

Host selection

The FISU, led by director Milan Augustin, visited the Lake Placid area on June 19–23, 2017, as well as nearby town of Wilmington, New York. [3] [4] The announcement was made on March 5, 2018. The bid was called one of the strongest in the history of Universiades by FISU officials. [5]

Universiade Recurring international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU)

The Universiade is an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The name is a combination of the words "University" and "Olympiad". The Universiade is referred to in English as the World University Games or World Student Games; however, this latter term can also refer to competitions for sub-University grades students. The Universiade is the largest multi-sport event in the world apart from the Olympic Games. The most recent games were in 2019: the Winter Universiade was in Krasnoyarsk, Russia while the Summer Universiade was held in Naples, Italy. The 2021 Winter Universiade will take place in Lucerne, Switzerland, with new dates to be announced soon, and the 2021 Summer Universiade will be held in Chengdu, China between 18 and 29 August 2021.

International University Sports Federation

The Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire is responsible for the organisation and governance of worldwide sports competitions for student-athletes between the ages of 17 and 28. It was founded in 1949 as the world governing body of national university sports organisations and currently has 174 member associations from five continents. Between 1949 and 2011, it was based in Brussels (Belgium); since 2011, it is based in Lausanne (Switzerland).

2028 Summer Olympics Games of the 34th Olympiad, to be held in Los Angeles, United States

The 2028 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXXIV Olympiad, and commonly stylized as LA28, is a forthcoming international multi-sport event that is scheduled to take place from July 21 to August 6, 2028, in Los Angeles, California, United States. It will be the first Summer Games to be held in the US since the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, and the first Olympics in the US since the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The 2013 Winter Universiade, the XXVI Winter Universiade, was a winter multi-sport event which took place in Trentino, Italy between 11 and 21 December 2013.

Lake Placid Olympic Ski Jumping Complex

The Lake Placid Olympic Ski Jumping Complex comprises a 90- and 120-meter ski jumps towers built for the 1980 Olympic Games in Lake Placid, New York, United States. They are located two miles from Lake Placid, off the Old Military Road, in Essex County, New York. The complex is operated by the Olympic Regional Development Authority.

2015 Winter Universiade

The 2015 Winter Universiade, the XXVII Winter Universiade, was a multi sport winter event held in Granada, Spain and Štrbské Pleso, Slovakia. On 14 March 2009, FISU announced that the host would be Granada because they were the only bid.

Venues of the 1976 Winter Olympics

For the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, a total of eight sports venues were used. The games were originally awarded to Denver, Colorado in the United States in 1970, but they withdrew in the wake of Colorado residents voting against it for environmental and cost reasons in November 1972. This led to the International Olympic Committee opening up the bids for the games again, eventually awarding them to Innsbruck in February 1973. The Austrian city, having hosted the Winter Olympics in 1964, was in the process of having the venues used for those Games before Denver's with clear cutting of the alpine skiing venues, lessening of the amount of cross-country skiing routes, upgrading the ski jumps, adding lighting in the indoor sports arena to accommodate color television, and the construction of a combination bobsleigh and luge track. After the 1976 Games, the venues have remained in use, hosting events in Nordic skiing and the sliding sports. They hosted some of the events for the Winter Universiade in 2005 and seven of the eight venues served as host for the first Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2012.

2017 Winter Universiade Athletic competition

Winter Universiade 2017, the XXVIII Winter Universiade, was a multi-sport winter event which took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan from 29 January to 8 February 2017. On 29 November 2011, FISU announced that Winter Universiade 2017 would be hosted in Almaty.

2019 Summer Universiade

The 2019 Summer Universiade, the XXX Summer Universiade was held in Naples, Italy, between 3 and 14 July 2019.

2019 Winter Universiade

The 2019 Winter Universiade, the XXIX Universiade, was an international student and youth competition, which took place from 2–12 March 2019 in the Russian city of Krasnoyarsk. The 2019 Winter Universiade was the third Universiade hosted in Russia and second as an independent country. The first Universiade, when Russia was a Soviet Republic, was hosted by Moscow in 1973, whereas Kazan, capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, hosted the 2013 Summer Universiade. It is the first Winter Universiade hosted by Russia, and the second time that the event was held in a former USSR republic.

Bids for the 2026 Winter Olympics

A total of seven bids were initially submitted for the 2026 Winter Olympics. Four of the bids were subsequently withdrawn after entering the candidature stage, leaving Milan–Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy and Stockholm–Åre, Sweden as the only two remaining candidate bids. Milan–Cortina d'Ampezzo was elected as the host city at the 134th IOC Session in Lausanne, Switzerland, on 24 June 2019.

Olympic Center

The Olympic Center is a sports complex in Lake Placid, New York that acted as the Olympic Park for both the 1932 and the 1980 Winter Olympics. It will be the main venue of the 2023 Winter Universiade.

2021 Winter Universiade

The 2021 Winter Universiade, the XXX Winter Universiade or XXX Winter World University Games, is scheduled to take place from 11th to 21st December 2021 in Central Switzerland as a joint project of the City of Lucerne and the six cantons of Central Switzerland: Lucerne, Nidwalden, Obwalden, Schwyz, Uri, and Zug. The programme includes ten sports, which will take place at seven venues. Students between the ages of 17 and 25 from over 540 universities and more than 50 countries will participate.

2021 Summer World University Games

The 2021 Summer World University Games, the XXXI Summer World University Games will be held in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, originally scheduled from 8 to 19 August 2021. Delayed twice due to scheduling change and was rescheduled to 18 to 29 August 2021, ten days after the rescheduled 2020 Summer Olympics.

2023 Summer World University Games

The 2023 FISU Summer World University Games, the 32nd edition of the event, will be held in Yekaterinburg, Russia.
