The 1975 Summer Universiade, also known as the VIII Summer Universiade, [1] took place in Rome, Italy. The 1975 Universiade only featured athletics, other disciplines having been cancelled, as the original host Yugoslavia was unable to hold the event. [2] It was therefore referred to as the World University Championships in athletics. [3] [4]

The Stadio Olimpico is the home stadium of the Roma and Lazio football clubs, and also hosts the Coppa Italia final. The Italian Rugby Union team also use the stadium for their home matches. It was rebuilt for the 1990 FIFA World Cup and it hosted the tournament final.

New events were the women's hammer throw, pole vault and half marathon competition. The marathon was dropped from the programme in favour of the half distance.
