The 2027 FISU Winter World University Games is an upcoming multi-sport event for student and youth athletes, scheduled from 15 to 25 January 2027 in Changchun, Jilin, China. This will be the second time that the event will be held in China after the 2009 Winter World University Games were held in Harbin. [2]
The following cities had all expressed an interest in hosting either the 2027 and 2029 Winter World University Games. [3]
On November 12, 2025, during the last meeting of the year of the FISU Executive Committee, it was announced that the organization had received a formal application from Changchun, China, to host the 2027 FISU World University Games Winter. The proposal was officially submitted by the China Student Sports Federation, responsible for representing the country within FISU.
At that meeting, the Executive Committee authorized the FISU Steering Committee to proceed with the technical evaluation of the application. According to the decision, the Steering Committee would conduct the final analysis at the end of November 2025, and, if all conditions and requirements were met, would also have the authority to conclude the contract for the awarding of the host city without the need for further deliberation by the Executive Committee.
FISU did not disclose, at that time, any other formally submitted applications for the event, although there had been preliminary expressions of interest from other cities months earlier. Following the evaluation and authorized procedure, the Steering Committee confirmed the awarding of the 2027 edition to the city of Changchun on November 26, 2025. [7] [8]
93 medal events in 12 sports are planned to be held during the Games, with the 10 compulsory sports, including the addition of ski orienteering to the list of compulsory sports. The organizers also chose ski mountaineering and speed skating as optional sports for this edition. Due to speed skating falling under a special sport status (meaning it does not count as either a required or optional sport), the organizers were allowed to add one more optional sport. [9]
Numbers in parentheses indicate the number of medal events contested in each sport.
