Municipal elections were held in the Indian state of Punjab on 21 December 2024. [1] The elections took place for 46 urban local bodies, including 5 municipal corporations and 41 municipal councils and nagar panchayats. [2]

Contents

Background

Previously, elections for these local bodies were held in December 2017, where Indian National Congress won all the four Municipal Corporations. [3] Terms of Amritsar, Patiala and Jalandhar ended in January 2022, and of Ludhiana in March 2022. [4]

Elections

Delimitition of the wards started in December 2022. [2] [5] In March 2023, Punjab and Haryana High Court directed Punjab state election commission to draw schedule for elections within two weeks. [6] On 16 October 2023, election commission announced schedule for electoral rolls, with final publication for rolls scheduled for 10 November 2023. [7]

Elections will be held for the five municipal corporations--Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Phagwara and Patiala--besides the 44 municipal councils and by-polls to some urban local bodies. [8]

Total of 1,609 polling locations having 3,809 polling booths are made by state election commission

Punjab is home to 2.3% of India's population; with a density of 551 persons per km2. According to the provisional results of the 2011 national census, Punjab has a population of 27,743,338, making it the 16th most populated state in India. Of which male and female are 14,639,465 and 13,103,873 respectively. 32% of Punjab's population consists of Dalits. In the state, the rate of population growth is 13.9% (2011), lower than national average. Out of total population, 37.5% people live in urban regions. The total figure of population living in urban areas is 10,399,146 of which 5,545,989 are males and while remaining 4,853,157 are females. The urban population in the last 10 years has increased by 37.5%. According to the 2011 Census of India, Punjab, India has a population of around 27.7 million.

Punjab is a state in northwestern India. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway</span> Indian expressway connecting Delhi with Katra in J&K

Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway is an approved 670 km (420 mi) long, 4-lane wide controlled-access expressway, which will connect Bahadurgarh border near Delhi with Katra in Jammu and Kashmir via Haryana and Punjab. It will have a spur section which will connect Nakodar with Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport located in Raja Sansi, Amritsar. The 397.7 km (247.1 mi) long Delhi–Katra Expressway is National Expressway 5(NE-5) and 99 km (62 mi) long Nakodar-Amritsar Expressway is National Expressway 5A(NE-5A). Once completed, it will reduce the current Delhi-Katra distance from 727 km (452 mi) to 588 km (365 mi) and the time travel will be reduced from 14 hours to 6 hours, and Delhi-Amritsar distance to 405 km (252 mi) and from the time travel will be reduced from 8 hours to only 4 hours.

Ludhiana Municipal Corporation or Ludhiana MC, is a local body to govern mainly urban area of Ludhiana, India. Municipal Corporation mechanism in India was introduced during British Rule with formation of municipal corporation in Madras (Chennai) in 1688, later followed by municipal corporations in Bombay (Mumbai) and Calcutta (Kolkata) by 1762. Ludhiana Municipal Corporation is headed by Mayor of city and governed by Commissioner. Ludhiana Municipal Corporation has been formed with functions to improve the infrastructure of town.

The COVID-19 pandemic was confirmed to have spread to the Indian state Punjab on 9 March 2020, when an Indian man returning from Italy was tested positive. As of 31 March 2021, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has confirmed a total of 2,39,734 cases, including 6,868 deaths and 2,09,034 recoveries in Punjab. The economy of Punjab has been severely effected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Municipal elections were held in the Indian state of Punjab on 14 February 2021; the result was declared on 17 February. The elections are scheduled for 117 urban local bodies, including 8 municipal corporations and 109 municipal councils and nagar panchayats. Elections were originally scheduled to be held in October 2020, but were delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
