26 Air Defence Regiment is an Air Defence regiment of the Indian Army.

Formation

26 Air Defence Regiment was raised on 1 October 1941 [1] at Drigh Road, Karachi as the 2nd Indian Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment [2] [3] under Lt Col EC Kensington, RA.

History

World War II
On 1 August 1942, the Regiment joined the Eastern Army and was deployed in Bengal and Assam. From November 1943 to December 1945, the Regiment was placed under Gen Slim's XIV Army under the IV Corps [4] and was the only Air Defence Regiment to enter Rangoon after its capture. [5] Havildar Surat Singh won the Indian Distinguished Service Medal. [6] [7]
Partition of India
In 1947–48, a train carrying refugees from Nizamuddin to Attari was attacked by a mob near Ludhiana. Maj Gurcharan Singh [8] and Naib Subedar Dhan Singh [9] displayed courage of the higher order and protected the refugees. For their bravery, they were awarded the Ashoka Chakra, Class II and Ashoka Chakra, Class III respectively. [10]
Hyderabad Police Action (1948)
The Regiment participated in the annexation of the state of Hyderabad into the Indian Union.
Sino-Indian War
The Regiment was deployed in the Eastern Theatre. In addition to its Air Defence role, detachments of the Regiment were deployed in infantry role in Tawang and Senge of Arunachal Pradesh. [11]
Indo-Pak War (1965)
The Regiment was deployed in the Eastern theatre, where 6 F-86s were engaged and 2 were shot down. [11]
Indo-Pakistani War of 1971
The Regiment was deployed in the Punjab sector and shot down 7 aircraft. The Regiment was awarded 1 Vir Chakra, [12] 1 Shaurya Chakra, [13] 1 Vishisht Seva Medal, 1 Sena Medal [14] and 2 Mention in Despatches.

The Ashoka Chakra is India's highest peacetime military decoration awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice away from the battlefield. It is the peacetime equivalent of the Param Vir Chakra (PVC), and is awarded for the "most conspicuous bravery or some daring or pre-eminent valour or self-sacrifice" other than in the face of the enemy. The decoration may be awarded either to military or civilian personnel.

Captain Bana SinghPVC is an Indian soldier and a recipient of the nation's highest gallantry award, the Param Vir Chakra. As a Naib Subedar in the Indian Army, he led the team that wrested control of the highest peak on the Siachen Glacier in Kashmir from Pakistani forces as part of Operation Rajiv. Following his success, India renamed the peak to Bana Post in his honour.

The Bihar Regiment is an Indian Army infantry regiment. It traces its origins back to the British Indian Army. The Bihar Regiment was formed in 1941 by regularising the 11th (Territorial) Battalion, the 19th Hyderabad Regiment, and raising new battalions. The Bihar Regimental Centre (BRC) is located at Danapur Cantonment, Patna, the second oldest cantonment of India. INS Vikramaditya, the Indian Navy's largest ship and its sole aircraft carrier is affiliated to the Bihar Regiment, Indian Army's highly decorated and battle-hardened unit. Naib Subedar Chuni Lal AC, VrC, SM was an Indian Army soldier of 8th battalion. The Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry. He was born in Bhaderwah, and basically from Gandhari Paddar and lived in Bhara village with parents Shanker Dass and Shakuntala Devi in Doda district of Jammu. Decorated with Vir Chakra and Sena Medal (Gallantry), JC-593527, Lal was martyred on 24 June 2007 in a militant flush-out operation in Kashmir's Kupwara sector. These militants, all of whom were also shot dead, were trying to cross the Line of Control (LoC) and enter Indian territory. The success of this militant flush-out operation, which claimed his life, earned him the highest peacetime military decoration awarded for valor, courageous action or self-sacrifice away from the battlefield, the Ashok Chakra. He is the highest decorated soldier of Indian Army of all time, honored with Sena Medal, Vir Chakra and Ashok Chakra.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">54th Infantry Division (India)</span> Military unit

The 54th Infantry Division is an Infantry division of the Indian Army. The Division was raised as an Infantry Division, but was converted into a Reorganised Amphibious Formation (RAMFOR) in 2011. It is currently the only division of the Indian Army which carries out Amphibious warfare. The division is headquartered at Secunderabad in Telangana and is a part of XXI Corps. The Division is commanded by a Two-star General Officer of the rank of Major General titled General Officer Commanding (GOC).
