5600 West Bus Route (formerly 5600 West BRT) is a proposed Enhanced Bus [1] line in western Salt Lake County, Utah, United States, that will be operated by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA). It will run along 5600 West (SR-172) for ~20 miles (32 km) from 5600 West Old Bingham Hwy TRAX Station in West Jordan to Salt Lake City International Airport. [2]
Formerly proposed as a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line with phased implementation, it was later reduced to an Enhanced Bus route without much dedicated infrastructure. It's now planned to be implemented within a single phase. [3]
The route will originate at the 5600 West Old Bingham Highway TRAX station where it will connect to the Red Line and run north along 5600 West before heading east towards Salt Lake City International Airport, where it will connect to the Green Line that heads into downtown Salt Lake City.
In 2010, while expressing their support for the 5600 West BRT project, West Valley City indicated that they do not ever foresee the need for a light rail line along South 5600 West. Of particular concern was UTA's plans to secure the additional right of way necessary for a future TRAX line. UTA responded to the objections by indicating that the TRAX line may not be built for several decades, but added that "It's always better to overplan and underconstruct than the other way around." At one point in the development stages, an additional stop further south in Herriman was planned. However, by 2013 this stop had been dropped from the plans. [5] [6]
The original plan for the project was as follows:
Phase 1 of the 5600 West BRT line will run along a 5-mile (8.0 km) segment of South 5600 West (SR-172) from 6200 South to 2700 West within Kearns and West Valley City. From the northern end of this segment, it will connect with Downtown Salt Lake City along a route (without any stops) following West 2700 North (Lake Park Boulevard), Bangerter Highway (SR-154), 21st South Freeway (SR-201), and Interstate 15 (I-15). The initial route is projected to include 6 stops and run at 10-15 minute intervals and cost $100 million. [7] UTA had anticipated having Phase 1 of the 5600 West BRT operational by the end of 2015. [7]
Phase 2 will extend the route to a total of 24 miles (39 km) [7] from Herriman to the Salt Lake City International Airport, with the bus connection to Downtown Salt Lake City being eliminated. Phase 2 will also include connections to four TRAX stations: the Airport station on the Green Line and the 5600 West Old Bingham Highway, South Jordan Parkway, and Daybreak Parkway stations on the Red Line. Phase 2 was originally estimated to be completed sometime before 2025. [7] Phase 3 calls for the eventual replacement of this BRT line with a TRAX light rail line along the entire Phase 2 corridor. There is no estimated completion date for Phase 3, except that it will not be until after Phase 2. [7]
UTA has assigned the number 256 to the route. [2]
The route starts in West Jordan at the 5600 West Old Bingham Highway Trax Station which is served by the Red Line, and will proceed north on 5600 West, stopping at 9000 South, 7800 South, and 7000 South until it enters Kearns. [8]
After leaving West Jordan, the bus stops only at 6200 South, before leaving Kearns and entering West Valley City. [8]
Just after entering West Valley City the 5600 West bus will reach the 5400 South stop at about 5400 South. Another Park and Ride lot is planned for the area of this stop as well. After crossing West 5400 South (SR-173), it will continue north along South 5600 West and will cross West 5200 South (Henley Drive/Westridge Boulevard), West 5100 South (Mountain Men Drive), West 4970 South (South Garden Ridge Road), and West 4700 South before arriving at the 4700 South stop. Continuing on along South 5400 West it will cross West 4470 South (Chantry Way), West 4420 South (Deercrest Drive), West 4360 South, before passing in front of Hunter High School and crossing over the Utah and Salt Lake Canal.
Just north of the canal the 5600 West bus will cross West 4100 South and then continue north to West 3500 South (SR-171) and the 3500 South stop. The 3500 South stop will include a connection to the 3500 South bus route (35) and is anticipated to include as Park and Ride lot as well. After crossing West 3500 South it will continue north along 5600 West and will cross West 3100 South before reaching West 2700 South (Parkway Boulevard/Lake Park Boulevard) and the 2700 South stop. This stop is also anticipated to include a Park and Ride lot. It will then proceed to stop at 2700 South, where it will connect to the new bus route 26 and 17. The bus will then proceed north along 5600 West until it enters Salt Lake City, where it will cross SR-201. [8]
After entering Salt Lake City, the bus will continue north until reaches the International Center, where it will make a stop. After it will proceed east along Amelia Earhart Drive, and then turn back south on Wright Brothers Drive heading to the entrance ramp onto I-80, where it will then exit off at the Airport, and proceed to the terminal, where it will stop. Then it will proceed back along the same route but heading in the opposite direction. [8]

TRAX is a light rail system in the Salt Lake Valley of Utah, in the United States, serving Salt Lake City and many of its suburbs throughout Salt Lake County. The system's official name, Transit Express, is rarely, if ever, used. The system is operated by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA). All TRAX trains are electric, receiving power from overhead wires.
The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) is a special service district responsible for providing public transportation throughout the Wasatch Front of Utah, in the United States, which includes the metropolitan areas of Ogden, Park City, Provo, Salt Lake City and Tooele. It operates fixed route buses, flex route buses, express buses, ski buses, three light rail lines in Salt Lake County (TRAX), a streetcar line in Salt Lake City, and a commuter rail train (FrontRunner) from Ogden through Salt Lake City to Provo. UTA is headquartered in Salt Lake City with operations and garages in locations throughout the Wasatch Front, including Ogden, Midvale and Orem. Light rail vehicles are stored and maintained at yards at locations in South Salt Lake and Midvale. UTA's commuter rail equipment is stored and serviced at a facility in Salt Lake City. In 2023, the system had a ridership of 35,058,000, or about 134,600 per weekday as of the third quarter of 2024.
Transportation in Salt Lake City consists of a wide network of roads, an extensive bus system, a light rail system, and a commuter rail line. Although Salt Lake City, Utah, is a traditionally car-oriented city, the rapidly growing public transit system has a high number of riders for a city of its size, and public transit is widely supported by its residents and businesses.
The Blue Line is a light rail line on the TRAX system in the Salt Lake Valley of Utah, in the United States, operated by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA). It is the first line of the TRAX system completed. The line opened on December 4, 1999, one year ahead of schedule after two years of construction. In addition to Salt Lake City, it also serves the communities of South Salt Lake, Murray, Midvale, Sandy and Draper. The line was known as the North/South Line or the Sandy/Salt Lake Line until color names were adopted for each TRAX line in August 2011. An extension of the line to Draper began service on August 18, 2013.
FrontRunner is a commuter rail train operated by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) that runs along the Wasatch Front in north-central Utah with service from Ogden Central station in central Weber County through Davis County, Salt Lake City, and Salt Lake County to Provo Central station in central Utah County. In 2023, the system had a ridership of 3,736,600, or about 15,000 per weekday as of the third quarter of 2024.
State Route 171 (SR-171) is a state highway in the Salt Lake City metropolitan area in northern Utah that runs from SR-111 in Magna in the west side of the city to Interstate 215 in the city of Millcreek in the eastern part valley. In its sixteen-mile span, the route is named 3500 South and 3300 South.
The Red Line is a light rail line on the TRAX system in the Salt Lake Valley of Utah operated by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA). It originally began operation in December 2001 as the peak-hour-only Sandy/University Line, running from the University of Utah south to Sandy Civic Center on the Blue Line. 1940 West North Temple station is a light rail station in Salt Lake City, Utah serviced by the Green Line of the Utah Transit Authority's (UTA) TRAX system. 3500 South MAX was a bus rapid transit (BRT) line in northwestern Salt Lake County, Utah, United States, operated by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) that ran between Magna, West Valley City, and South Salt Lake. It opened for service on July 14, 2008, and was the first of several BRT lines that UTA is planning in the Salt Lake Valley, Weber County, and Utah County.
Utah Valley Express, also known as UVX, is a bus rapid transit (BRT) line in central Utah County, Utah, United States. The line is operated by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) and runs between southwest Orem to south central Provo by way of Utah Valley University (UVU) and Brigham Young University (BYU). It began service with a soft opening on August 13, 2018, while the station platforms were being finished and was formally opened on January 9, 2019. It is the second of several BRT lines that UTA has or is planning in Utah County and the Salt Lake Valley.
The Midvalley Express (MVX), originally known as the Taylorsville-Murray BRT and later as Midvalley Connector) is an under construction bus rapid transit (BRT) line anticipated to run between Murray and West Valley City in Utah, United States, that will be operated by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA). It will connect the main campus of Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) in Taylorsville with both the TRAX light rail system and the FrontRunner commuter rail. It is the fourth of several BRT lines that UTA is planning along the Wasatch Front. Bus Rapid Transit is described by UTA as "light rail on rubber tires".
The Mount Timpanogos Transit Center was a staffed, open air bus transfer station in southeast Orem, Utah, United States. It functioned as both the Utah Transit Authority's (UTA) customer service center for Utah County, as well as a bus transfer center for UTA's buses in east central Utah Valley. Prior to the opening of the FrontRunner commuter rail extension south to Provo in 2012), it was the busiest bus stop within the entire UTA bus system.
Ogden Express (OGX) is a 5.3-mile (8.5 km) bus rapid transit (BRT) line in southern Ogden, Utah. United States. The line is operated by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA) and runs between Ogden Central station and the McKay-Dee Hospital, via Weber State University (WSU). OGX is the third of UTA's BRT lines along the Wasatch Front, and officially opened on August 20, 2023.
