The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is the domestic intelligence and security service of the United States and its principal federal law enforcement agency. An agency of the United States Department of Justice,the FBI is a member of the U.S. Intelligence Community and reports to both the Attorney General and the Director of National Intelligence. A leading U.S. counterterrorism,counterintelligence,and criminal investigative organization,the FBI has jurisdiction over violations of more than 200 categories of federal crimes.
The United States Marshals Service (USMS) is a federal law enforcement agency in the United States. The Marshals Service serves as the enforcement and security arm of the U.S. federal judiciary,and it is an agency of the U.S. Department of Justice and operates under the direction of the U.S. Attorney General. U.S. Marshals are the original U.S. federal law enforcement officers,created by the Judiciary Act of 1789 during the presidency of George Washington as the "Office of the United States Marshal" under the U.S. District Courts. The USMS was established in 1969 to provide guidance and assistance to U.S. Marshals throughout the federal judicial districts.
The Bureau of Alcohol,Tobacco,Firearms and Explosives (BATFE),commonly referred to as the ATF,is a domestic law enforcement agency within the United States Department of Justice. Its responsibilities include the investigation and prevention of federal offenses involving the unlawful use,manufacture,and possession of firearms and explosives;acts of arson and bombings;and illegal trafficking and tax evasion of alcohol and tobacco products. The ATF also regulates via licensing the sale,possession,and transportation of firearms,ammunition,and explosives in interstate commerce. Many of the ATF's activities are carried out in conjunction with task forces made up of state and local law enforcement officers,such as Project Safe Neighborhoods. The ATF operates a unique fire research laboratory in Beltsville,Maryland,where full-scale mock-ups of criminal arson can be reconstructed. The ATF had 5,285 employees and an annual budget of almost $1.5 billion in 2021. The ATF has received criticism over its handling of the Ruby Ridge siege,the Waco siege and other incidents.
In the United States,a special agent is an official title used to refer to certain investigators or detectives of federal,military,tribal,or state agencies who primarily serve in criminal investigatory positions. Additionally,some special agents operate in criminal intelligence,counterterrorism,or counterintelligence-based roles as well,with one or all of these roles occasionally taking precedence over criminal investigatory tasks.
The United States Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) is the primary investigative law enforcement agency of the U.S. Department of the Navy. Its primary function is to investigate major criminal activities involving the Navy and Marine Corps. However,its broad mandate includes national security,counterintelligence,counterterrorism,cyberwarfare,and the protection of U.S. naval assets worldwide. NCIS is the successor organization to the former Naval Investigative Service (NIS),which was established by the Office of Naval Intelligence after the Second World War. One-half of NCIS personnel are civilian,with the other half being US government investigators —1811 series special agents. NCIS agents are armed federal law enforcement investigators,who frequently coordinate with other U.S. government agencies and have a presence in more than 41 countries and on U.S. Navy vessels. NCIS special agents are supported by analysts and other experts skilled in disciplines such as forensics,surveillance,surveillance countermeasures,computer investigations,physical security,and polygraph examinations.
The Department of Public Safety of the State of Texas,commonly known as the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS),is a department of the state government of Texas. The DPS is responsible for statewide law enforcement and driver license administration. The Public Safety Commission oversees the DPS. However,under state law,the Governor of Texas may assume command of the department during a public disaster,riot,insurrection,formation of a dangerous resistance to enforcement of law,or to perform his constitutional duty to enforce law. The commission's five members are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Texas Senate,to serve without pay for staggered,six-year terms. The commission formulates plans and policies for enforcing criminal,traffic and safety laws,preventing and detecting crime,apprehending law violators,and educating citizens about laws and public safety.
The Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) is the principal law enforcement and security agency of the United States Department of State (DOS). As the operational division of DOS Bureau of Diplomatic Security,its primary mission is to provide security to protect diplomatic assets,personnel,and information,and combat transnational crimes connected to visa and passport fraud. DSS also conducts counterterrorism,counterintelligence,cybersecurity and criminal investigations domestically and abroad.

The Virginia Tech Police Department (VTPD) is a nationally accredited police department with jurisdiction over Virginia Tech. The departments original accreditation with CALEA was awarded on November 18,1995 and the department has continued with re-accreditation. In November 2015,the department met "gold standard" and also won CALEA's "Accreditation with Excellence" award.
The Lake County Sheriff's Office is the largest law enforcement agency in Lake County,Florida,United States. Per the State of Florida Constitution,the sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer of both the incorporated and unincorporated areas of the county. The current Sheriff is U.S. Marine Corps veteran Peyton C. Grinnell who was elected November,2016 in the Lake County general election. He succeeds Sheriff Gary Borders,who was appointed by Governor Jeb Bush following the death of Sheriff Chris Daniels in 2006,and was subsequently elected in 2008,and 2012. The agency has been awarded with a certificate of accreditation from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation,consequently,both the Law Enforcement and Corrections divisions of the Lake County Sheriff's Office are now accredited.

FDLE is headed by a commissioner who reports to the Florida Cabinet,which is composed of the governor,the attorney general,the chief financial officer,and the commissioner of agriculture. The Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy is a law enforcement training facility located in Ashburn,Virginia. It serves 17 agencies in Virginia and Washington,D.C.,and is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Robert A. Ricks —known as Bob Ricks and "Backdraft Bob" —is an American law enforcement agent and politician from Texas and Oklahoma. He has worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation,the Governor of Oklahoma and in local law enforcement. He is best known as the FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge during the 1993 Waco Siege or as FBI Special Agent in Charge during the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing investigation.
