ARB Apex Bank is a mini central bank for the Rural & Community Banks (RCBs). The basic facts: [1]

It started its banking business on 2 July 2002. [3] In 2018, it claimed to be the first bank in Ghana to issue bank cards to EMV standards which allow payments on the Gh-link platform. [4]

Rural banks are financed mainly via the Rural Financial Services Project (RFSP), that is a project of the Government of Ghana to solve the operational problems of the rural financial sector. Every Rural and Community bank in Ghana was mandated to contribute two thousand Ghana cedis to buy shares of the ARB – Apex bank Ltd, to enable the bank become accountable to the rural and community banks. So every rural and community bank in Ghana own two thousand Ghana cedis worth of shares in Apex Bank. The remaining shares of the bank are also owned by the government of Ghana. The acronym ARB stands for the Association of Rural Banks. [5]

Operations

The apex financial institution lends cash to rural banks who, in turn, provide small credit to small businesses and also support the development of rural projects. [6]

In 1969, the All India Rural Credit Review Committee recommended that Apex co-operative banks directly finance co-operative societies.[ citation needed ]

Besides the head office, there are ten branch offices throughout the country, including locations in Bolgatanga, Hohoe, Koforidua, Cape Coast, Kumasi, Sunyani, Takoradi, Wa, Tamale, and Accra.

This is the list of rural banks in Ghana. Rural banks were first established in Ghana in 1976 to provide banking services to the rural population, providing credit to small-scale farmers and businesses and supporting development projects, with the first being in Agona Nyakrom in Central Region. The banks are locally owned and managed. By 2002 115 rural banks had been established. They are supervised by the clearing bank ARB Apex Bank under the regulation of the Bank of Ghana, which owns shares in the banks.

uniBank Ghanaian bank

uniBank (Ghana) Limited, commonly known as uniBank, was an indigenous private bank in Ghana, West Africa. The bank was placed in administration in March 2018 and subsequently consolidated as part of the Ghana Government's handling of its banking crisis. The collapse was controversial as it involved allegations of trading insolvently, and 5 billion cedis in illegal and related party transactions, unlawful loans and illegal acquisition of bank assets by Directors and shareholders. Founded by a former governor of the Bank of Ghana, uniBank was one of the thirty-five commercial banks licensed to operate in Ghana.

DCB Bank Limited is a private sector scheduled commercial bank in India. It is amongst the new generation banks that received the scheduled commercial bank license from the bank regulator, Reserve Bank of India. DCB Bank received the licence on 31 May 1995.

Capital Bank was an indigenous private national development and commercial Ghanaian bank. It was one of the private national development and commercial banks licensed by Bank of Ghana, the national banking regulator. On August 14, 2017, the Bank of Ghana announced it had revoked its license due to insolvency during Ghana's banking crisis. The bank was then taken over by GCB Bank. The founder of the bank, William Ato Essien and three others were subsequently charged with misappropriating 100 million Ghana Cedis of the Bank's assets.

Bandhan Bank Ltd. is a banking and financial services company, headquartered in Kolkata. Bandhan Bank is present in 35 out of 36 states and union territories of India, with 6,140 banking outlets and 3.07 crore customers. Having received the universal banking licence from the Reserve Bank of India, Bandhan Bank started operations on August 23, 2015, with 501 branches, 50 ATMs and 2,022 Banking Units (BUs).
