Career

Mahmud is known for directing television dramas, web content, and series. He has directed numerous television dramas and web series, often collaborating with actors such as Mosharraf Karim, Chanchal Chowdhury, and Nusrat Imrose Tisha.

In 2018, amid the FIFA World Cup, Mahmud directed several Eid programs for Channel I, including the telefilm The Boss and the seven-episode football-themed serial Fair Play, marking the first collaboration of actors Zahid Hasan, Chanchal Chowdhury, and Nusrat Imrose Tisha in a single drama. He expressed concerns about the World Cup potentially reducing viewership for Eid dramas but noted optimism for post-broadcast online consumption on platforms like YouTube. [3]

In 2018, Mahmud directed the successful television drama Swarnamanob starring Mosharraf Karim, which garnered nearly 4 million YouTube views, leading to a follow-up next year, Swarnamanob 2, focusing on airport gold smuggling, which aired on Channel I during International Customs Day. It is not a narrative continuation to Swarnamanob, but a spiritual successor starring Chanchal Chowdhury as Sharif and Nusrat Imrose Tisha as Roopa. [4] The drama also stars Shatabdi Wadud, Arman Parvez Murad, Sujat Shimul, Amanul Haque Helal, Kochi Khandaker and several other familiar faces from the small screen. After airing on television, 'Swarnamanab 2' has been uploaded to Channel i's YouTube channel. Where viewers are directly expressing their evaluation of the drama. Most of the comments are positive. Like 'Swarnamanab', this drama has also touched the hearts of the audience. Earlier, producer Abu Hayat Mahmud had said about the drama that although it is named 'Swarnamanab 2', the drama is in no way a sequel to 'Swarnamanab'. New stories, new characters and new ideas have been shown in this drama. The producer said that although 'Swarnamanab 2' was made with a new story, this drama is also based on the incident of gold smuggling centered on the airport. I hope it will surpass the success of 'Swarnamanab'. [5]

Mahmud also directed several television dramas for Channel I’s Eid-ul-Fitr 2019 lineup, collaborating with actress Shabnom Faria, though budget constraints due to FIFA World Cup sponsorships limited experimental scope for these projects. [6]

Mahmud directed the comedy film Shongshar Unlimited for the OTT platform Chorki, focusing on the everyday challenges of household management through the story of a workaholic who learns its complexities from children. He described the plot as familiar but rarely explored in the subcontinent, emphasizing the team's effort to present it effectively. [7] The project stars Iresh Zaker, Moushumi Hamid, Saira Jahan, and Mir Rabbi, with child artists including Mumtahina, and was produced by Chorki with contributions from Redoan Rony.

In August 2024, he was announced as the director of a Gen Z–focused drama, Gen-Z Ami Ke? Tumi Ke?, written by Mezbah Uddin Sumon. [2] It was a political satire serial and produced by Creative Land Production House. The story portrays a family as a metaphor for a country, focusing on Generation Z's role in breaking authoritarian structures through humor, love, and tension, inspired by the quota reform movement and dedicated to its martyrs. Shooting began on September 10, 2024, with Mahmud emphasizing its delivery of social messages via comedy, set for broadcast on a private television channel. [8]

In 2025, he directed the documentary Upokul, produced under the auspices of the Bangladesh Coast Guard. [9] The fiction project Upokul is a cinematic portrayal of the Bangladesh Coast Guard's operations, including maritime security, rescue missions, and anti-smuggling efforts. The film stars ABM Sumon as a Coast Guard officer and was shot over 11 days in coastal locations such as Bhola and Mongla, with a planned release in February to coincide with a special Coast Guard occasion. [10]

His feature film Prince: Once Upon a Time in Dhaka, starring Shakib Khan and produced by Creative Land - Films, has been publicly promoted as his debut cinematic directorial effort. The film is expected to be released during Eid-ul-Fitr 2026. [1] [11]

Controversy

In December 2024, television actress Aisha Khan (Tahiya Tazeen Khan Aisha) publicly alleged via social media that she had not been fully paid by Mahmud for her work in a series produced for Deepto Play. She claimed that despite the production company stating that payments were cleared, Mahmud delayed and partially withheld the funds, leaving an outstanding amount. [12] As of 2025, no public court ruling or official resolution had been reported in response to these allegations.
