Accident or Conspiracy: Godhra is a 2024 Hindi-language drama film produced under the banner of OM Trinetra Films and Artverse Studios directed by M.K Shivaaksh. [1] [2] [3] The drama is based on the events surrounding the 2002 Godhra train fire in Gujarat, India, which later led to the 2002 Gujarat riots shortly afterward.

Synopsis

The film is based on the report issued by the Nanavati-Mehta Commission, [4] which was set up to investigate the Godhra train fire. [5] The film aims to uncover what happened in Godhra. Was it a spontaneous act where some individuals set fire to the train in a fit of frenzy, or was it a pre-planned conspiracy? [6]

Following the initial riot incidents, there were further outbreaks of violence in Ahmedabad for three months; statewide, there were further outbreaks of violence against the minority Muslim population of Gujarat for the next year.

The Nanavati-Mehta Commission is the commission of inquiry appointed by the government of Gujarat to probe the Godhra train burning incident of 27 February 2002. Its mandate was later enlarged to include the investigation of the 2002 Gujarat riots. It was appointed on 6 March 2002, with K. G. Shah, a retired Gujarat High Court judge, as its only member. It was later re-constituted to include G. T. Nanavati, a retired judge of the Supreme Court of India, after protests from human rights organizations over Shah's closeness to then-Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Akshay H. Mehta, retired judge of the Gujarat High Court, replaced Shah when the latter died before the submission of the commission's interim report. Mehta was the same judge who had granted bail to Babu Bajrangi, the main accused of the Naroda Patiya massacre.
