Chukwuemeka "Emeka" Odumegwu Ojukwu was a Nigerian military officer and politician who served as President of the Republic of Biafra from 1967 to 1970 during the Nigerian Civil War. He previously served as military governor of the Eastern Region of Nigeria,which he declared as the independent nation of Biafra.

Sam Ominyi Egwu CON is a Nigerian politician and member of People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Nigeria. He was elected Governor of Ebonyi State in the 1999 Ebonyi State gubernatorial election from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007. Dr Egwu is noted as pillar of educational development in Ebonyi state and Nigeria. He attended the University of Nigeria,Nsukka where he obtained a bachelor's degree in Agricultural in 1981. He later received a master's degrees in Agricultural from the University of Nigeria,Nsukka in 1987 and Doctorate in Agronomy from Enugu State University of Technology in 1996. He was a senior lecturer at Enugu State University of Technology and served as commissioner for education in Ebonyi state contributed to the successes recorded in education sector during his tenure as governor.

The airport is named after the late Akanu Ibiam (1906–1995),a medical doctor and statesman who hailed from Afikpo in Ebonyi State.

The fall of Enugu was a military conflict between Nigerian and Biafran forces in September and October 1967 during the Nigerian Civil War which centered around Enugu,the capital of the secessionist Republic of Biafra. Nigerian federal forces had made Enugu's capture a priority shortly after war broke out,but their advance stalled at Nsukka. Biafran president and leader Odumegwu Ojukwu,attempted to distract the Nigerian Army by initiating an invasion of Nigeria's Mid-Western Region in August,but the offensive was brought to a halt. Lieutenant Colonel Theophilus Danjuma took charge of the Nigerian forces at the Nsukka front and prepared to advance on Enugu with seven battalions of the 1st Division. Enugu was garrisoned by one brigade led by Colonel Alexander Madiebo and poorly armed civilians called into service. Danjuma decided to launch an offensive with his forces spread over a broad front to make it more difficult for the Biafrans to block them along major roads as had happened up to that point.
The Waawa clan of Northern Igboland,also referred to as Ndi Waawa,Wawa People,are a unique sub-group of the Igbo people in Enugu and Ebonyi State,Nigeria,consisting of several communities,who all speak a unique dialect of Igbo called Waawa. The most notable among these are the Agbaja and Ngwo which consist of peoples between the wooded lands of Awka to the rocky valleys of Enugu. The Agbaja are made up of communities in present-day Ngwo clan,Udi,Ezeagu,Umulokpa,Igbo-Etiti,Oji River,greater Awgu,Odume,Ndiagbor,Nenwe,Mpu,Okpanku and Enugu East Local Government Areas. Other notable parts of the Waawa clan include Nkanu,Nsukka,Abia,Nike,Agbani,Owo,and other communities in Enugu State. The Waawa are most notably associated with Chief Onyeama's people from Eke,who was the paramount ruler of Agbaja in the early 20th century.

Harry Hastings was a Presbyterian Scottish physician,surgeon,and medical missionary with the United Free Church of Scotland who served in Nigeria from 1922-1949. Hastings worked primarily at the Uburu Hospital but also in the village of Itu,both in Ogoja Province in Nigeria. Hastings was assisted by his wife,described as a "practical nurse," who accompanied him on his missions to Africa from 1922-1949 and shared responsibility with him in developing clinics to treat leprosy. He also worked with fellow physicians R.M. Macdonald of Scotland and Akanu Ibiam of Nigeria during his time in Uburu. He is known as uniquely developing Nigerian staff to run health services without additional foreign missionaries.
