The Alabama and Florida Railway( reporting mark AF) was a short-line railroad headquartered in Andalusia, Alabama. It was owned and operated by Pioneer Railcorp of Peoria, Illinois. It operated a former Louisville and Nashville Railroad branch line from Andalusia to Geneva, Alabama. The company abandoned the entire line in 2011.

History

The company was organized in 1992 when parent Pioneer Railcorp acquired the entirety of the Alabama and Florida Railroad. This included 76.66 miles (123.37 km) between Georgiana and Geneva, Alabama and a 2.9-mile (4.7 km) line in the vicinity of Andalusia which had been leased from the Andalusia and Conecuh Railroad. Operations began on November 23, 1992. [1] 36 miles (58 km) of track from Georgiana to Andalusia, including the track within Andalusia, was sold to Gulf and Ohio Railways and named the Three Notch Railroad on June 11, 2001. [2] On August 9, 2011, the AF filed an exemption notice with the Surface Transportation Board to abandon its entire line. [3]

Pioneer Lines is a holding company for a number of American short-line railroads. Other subsidiaries offer locomotive and freight car leasing to its own railroads and to third parties, and also freight car cleaning. Pioneer Lines also has interests in real estate and newsletter publishing. It has been owned by BRX Transportation Holdings since 2019.

The Southern Railroad of New Jersey is a small short-line railroad company based in Winslow Township, New Jersey. The railroad operates freight trains in two areas in Southern New Jersey. In the Winslow area, trains operate between Winslow Junction and Pleasantville, and between Winslow Junction and the Winslow Hot Mix asphalt plant in Winslow Township. In Gloucester County, the company operates on the Salem Branch between Swedesboro, New Jersey and Woodbury.

The Elkhart & Western Railroad Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of Pioneer Railcorp, is a Class III short-line railroad operating three unconnected lines in northern Indiana. The first, the Elkhart Branch, is in and around the city of Elkhart in Elkhart County, the second, the Argos Branch, radiates from Plymouth, in Marshall County, and the third, the Monon Branch, operating from Monon to Monticello, in White County.

Gulf & Ohio Railways is a holding company for four different short-line railroads in the Southern United States, as well as a tourist-oriented passenger train, and locomotive leasing and repair service through Knoxville Locomotive Works. Gulf & Ohio maintains its corporate headquarters in Knoxville, Tennessee.

The Pine Belt Southern Railroad was a shortline railroad formerly operating on two disconnected track segments in east central Alabama. Upon its start in 1995 the railroad ran over a branch from Nuckols to Hurtsboro, Alabama. In 1996 a second branch was acquired, extending from Roanoke, Jct., near Opelika, to Lafayette, Alabama. Together the lines totaled 42.4 miles (68.2 km) and the railroad was controlled by Richard Abernathy.

The West Michigan Railroad is a shortline railroad in southwest Michigan. It began operations in 1995, replacing the bankrupt Kalamazoo, Lake Shore and Chicago Railroad on an ex-Pere Marquette Railway line between Hartford and Paw Paw, Michigan. That company had taken over operations in 1987 from CSX Transportation.

The Mobile & Girard Railroad was an Alabama railroad which was constructed in the mid-19th century; a portion of the line continues in operation under different ownership. The 26-mile (42 km) line was constructed with a track gauge of 5 ft.

The Gettysburg Railway was a Pennsylvania short-line railroad of RailAmerica that operated on 23.4 mi (37.7 km) between Gettysburg and Mount Holly Springs. The line shipped freight for local companies, interchanged with Conrail at Carlisle Junction in Mount Holly Springs, and operated a tourist railroad under a subsidiary, Gettysburg Scenic Rail Tours. In 1996, the Gettysburg Railway company was created to operate the Gettysburg Railroad purchased by RailAmerica's Delaware Valley Railroad Company.

The Andalusia and Conecuh Railroad was a shortline railroad formerly operating between Gantt and Andalusia, Alabama, United States 8.7 miles (14.0 km). It was largely abandoned in 1987, with the remainder leased to the Alabama and Florida Railway. A portion of the railroad survives today as part of the Three Notch Railroad.

The Gettysburg and Northern Railroad is owned by Pioneer Lines.
