The Alabama Warrior Railway( reporting mark ABWR) is a terminal railroad in Birmingham, Alabama, United States. The railroad operates within the confines of Walter Industries in North Birmingham. It began operations on August 7, 2009, and is owned and operated by Watco.

History

The ABWR operates 15 miles (24 km) of railroad. [1] Its route dates back to the Marylee Railroad, which was founded in 1895. The Jefferson Warrior Railroad had operated it since 1985. The ABWR began operating on August 7, 2009. [2] The railroad hauls approximately 9,000 carloads annually and interchanges with CSX, Norfolk Southern and BNSF. [1] On June 24, 2014, Caleb Bankston, a former contestant on reality series Survivor: Blood vs. Water and employee of the railroad, was killed by a derailment in Birmingham. [3] [4]

The St. Louis–San Francisco Railway, commonly known as the "Frisco", was a railroad that operated in the Midwest and South Central United States from 1876 to April 17, 1980. At the end of 1970, it operated 4,547 miles (7,318 km) of road on 6,574 miles (10,580 km) of track, not including subsidiaries Quanah, Acme and Pacific Railway and the Alabama, Tennessee and Northern Railroad; that year, it reported 12,795 million ton-miles of revenue freight and no passengers. The Alabama Southern Railroad is a class III railroad that operates in the southern United States. The ABS is one of several short line railroads owned by Watco. The railroad operates an 85-mile (137 km) line leased from the Kansas City Southern Railway (KCSR). It began operating in 2005.

The Alabama and Florida Railway was a short-line railroad headquartered in Andalusia, Alabama. It was owned and operated by Pioneer Railcorp of Peoria, Illinois. It operated a former Louisville and Nashville Railroad branch line from Andalusia to Geneva, Alabama. The company abandoned the entire line in 2011.

The Birmingham Southern Railroad was a short-line railroad in the Birmingham, Alabama, area. It ceased operating in 2012 when its assets were acquired by Watco's Birmingham Terminal Railway.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Waycross Air Line Railroad</span> Defunct railroad in Georgia

The Waycross Air Line Railroad, chartered in 1887, was an air-line railroad in Georgia. It began operations between Waycross and Sessoms in 1890. In 1901, the railroad had extended as far as Fitzgerald, Georgia, at which time its charter was amended for an extension to Birmingham, Alabama, and it was renamed the Atlantic and Birmingham Railroad. That company purchased the Tifton and Northeastern Railroad and Tifton, Thomasville and Gulf Railway on December 3, 1903, changing its name to the Atlantic and Birmingham Railway. In 1906, the Atlantic and Birmingham Railway was in turn purchased by the Atlanta, Birmingham and Atlantic Railway, which continued expansion towards Birmingham.

The Jefferson Warrior Railroad was a terminal railroad as reported by the AAR. The JEFW began in 1895 as the Marylee Railroad took its current name in 1985. It operated about 15 miles (24 km) of railroad in and around Birmingham, Alabama. The railroad was taken over by Watco and renamed the Alabama Warrior Railway in 2009.

The Alabama Great Southern Railroad is a railroad in the U.S. states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. It is an operating subsidiary of the Norfolk Southern Corporation (NS), running southwest from Chattanooga to New Orleans through Birmingham and Meridian. The AGS also owns about a 30% interest in the Kansas City Southern-controlled Meridian-Shreveport Meridian Speedway.

Tyson Apostol is an American reality television personality, best known for his appearances on multiple seasons of the CBS reality television show Survivor. Apostol originally competed on Survivor: Tocantins in 2009, finishing in 8th place. He returned as a villain on Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains in 2010 and came in 15th place. In 2013, he returned again and was eventually crowned the winner of Survivor: Blood vs. Water. Apostol competed for a fourth time on the show's 40th season Survivor: Winners at War, finishing in 11th place. He also competed on The Challenge: USA, a CBS spinoff of the MTV franchise.

<i>Birmingham Special</i> Historical passenger rail service

The Birmingham Special was a passenger train operated by the Southern Railway, Norfolk and Western Railway, and Pennsylvania Railroad in the southeastern United States. The train began service in 1909 and continued, with alterations, after Amtrak assumed control of most long-haul intercity passenger rail in the United States on May 1, 1971. The Birmingham Special is the namesake of the famed Glenn Miller big band tune "Chattanooga Choo Choo".

Hayden Garrett Moss, is a reality TV personality from Mesa, Arizona. He was the winner of the reality TV show Big Brother 12. He subsequently competed on Survivor: Blood vs. Water with his then-girlfriend, Survivor: One World contestant Kat Edorsson; Moss finished the show in 7th place.
