James Craig Brown was a Scottish professional football player and manager. After his playing career with Rangers, Dundee and Falkirk was curtailed by a series of knee injuries, Brown entered management with Clyde in 1977. He held this position until 2001, the longest tenure for a Scotland manager, and they qualified for the UEFA Euro 1996 and 1998 FIFA World Cup tournaments. He later managed Preston North End, Motherwell and Aberdeen. He retired from management in 2013 and was appointed a non-executive director of Aberdeen.
Andrew Lewis Goram was a Scottish footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Born in Bury, Lancashire, England, he started his career with Oldham Athletic and Hibernian, but he is best remembered for playing for Rangers during the 1990s, when he earned the nickname "The Goalie". In a 2001 poll of Rangers fans, Goram was voted Rangers' greatest-ever goalkeeper.

Football in Scotland has been dominated by two clubs, Celtic and Rangers, both based in Glasgow and collectively known as the Old Firm due to the mutual economic benefits of the public interest in their longstanding rivalry, since the introduction of a national league system in 1890. While many of the league contests have been closely fought between the pair and have occasionally involved other clubs, periods of one-team dominance have occurred, most significantly three periods of nine championship wins in succession since the 1970s which has led to the term "Nine in a row" becoming a commonly-used phrase, and a topic which has drawn much attention.
