Ali Akbar Moosavi-Movahedi (born in Shiraz, Iran, February 1953) is an Iranian Biophysicist, and Biophysical Chemist at the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics, University of Tehran. He is the founder of the Iran Society of Biophysical Chemistry Archived 2014-09-04 at the Wayback Machine . [2] He is the fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), [3] fellow of Islamic World Academy of Sciences (IAS), and a member of the Islamic Republic of Iran Academy of Sciences. [4]

Education and early life

Ali Akbar Moosavi-Movahedi was born in Shiraz, Iran, in 1953. He attended Alborz High School in 1968, graduated from the National University of Iran (now known as Shahid Beheshti University) with a BSc in chemistry in 1975, earned his MSc in Bioanalytical Chemistry at the Eastern Michigan University in 1979, and obtained his Ph.D. in Biophysical Chemistry at the University of Manchester in 1986.

Professional experience

Ali Akbar Moosavi-Movahedi's [5] research career has been mostly marked on thermodynamics of protein denaturation especially by surfactants, protein folding/unfolding, protein glycation, biophysics of molecular diabetes, amyloid and protein aggregation and fibrillation, bioactive peptides, nutraceuticals, functional foods  and artificial enzyme. [6] [7] He has been selected as the chair of UNESCO Chair on Interdisciplinary Research in Diabetes, University of Tehran which is mostly oriented in the area of oxidative stress and diabetes complications. [8] He has established a highly equipped BCL laboratory for collaborations and working with different international research groups. [9]

Ali A. Moosavi-Movahedi has been one of the pioneering scientists in establishing the first PhD programs in Biochemistry and Biophysics in Iran. He has initiated a few science and technology institutional foundations in Iran. [10] His publications include 20 books [11] and numerous full research papers published mostly in international research journals, mainly around structural elucidation of proteins, enzymes, and DNA strands. [5] [6] [7] [12] He is the chair of Center of Excellence in Biothermodynamics [13] and national committee member of the International Science Council (ISC) (previous name: ICSU) [14] [15] at University of Tehran.

He is a member of a few national and international scientific societies and is currently the president of Iran Society of Biophysical Chemistry(ISOBC). [16] [17] Several awards are given to researchers by the society such as ISOBC Global Science Contribution for senior highly cited distinguished scientists, ISOBC for talented young (under 35 year) researcher, Moosavi-Movahedi Award for young (under 40 years) eminent PhD that confer to scientists in Annual ISOBC Congress. [16] ISOBC is a member of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB) [18] and the European Biophysical Societies' Association (EBSA). [19]

He is the founding member of the Federation of Iran Bioscience Societies (FIrBS), [20] Universal Scientific Education and Research Network (USERN), [21] Biochemical Society of Iran, [22] Iranian Biology Society. [23]

He is the Editor-in-Chief of a journal named "Science Cultivation," which publishes aimed popularization of science, policy research in science and technology, promotion of science, assisting managers and policymakers in scientific centers, steering the direction of research for scientific elites and innovators in science and technology. This Journal attempts to create the necessary context for cultivating and fertilizing new areas of sciences through monitoring, culture building, and scientific capacity building. [24]

He supports organizing National, Regional, and International conferences in the field of Biophysical Chemistry, biothermodynamics, Biomolecular Sciences [17] and also in the area of enculturing science and technology advancements. [14]

He has published a new international book entitled "Rationality and Scientific Lifestyle for Health" [25] Springer 2021.

Bagher Ardeshir Larijani is an Iranian medical practitioner at Tehran University of Medical Sciences. He is currently Chief Scientific Officer and Director General of the Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Institute (EMRI) which has been selected as the highest-ranking research institute in Iran on numerous occasions. According to Google Scholar, in February 2020, his citations exceeded 28021 with an h-index equal to 73. Since 2011, Essential Sciences Indicators (ESI) of ISI Web of Sciences has announced him to be amongst the world’s top 1% scientists. Professor Larijani’s main fields of interest include diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, and medical ethics amongst several other interdisciplinary sciences related to endocrinology.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Nima Rezaei</span> Iranian scientist

Nima Rezaei is an Iranian scientist, a professor of clinical immunology and allergy at Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Associate Dean of International Affairs in the School of Medicine and the Director of Global Academic Program (GAP). Nima Rezaei is the mastermind, founder and current president of the Universal Scientific Education and Research Network (USERN). Rezaei is known for his research in Primary Immunodeficiencies, characterization and treatment. He initiated the Iranian Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases Registry (IPIDR) in 1999 under supervision of Professor Asghar Aghamohammadi, which earned him the best research project award in the 4th Avicenna festival.

Siamak Yassemi is an Iranian mathematician and is currently the Dean of Faculty of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, University of Tehran, Iran. He has found basic techniques that have played important roles in the field homological algebra. His recent works have established relationships between monomial ideals in commutative algebra and graphs in combinatorics, which have stimulated the development of the new interdisciplinary field combinatorial commutative algebra. Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Islamic Republic of Iran, he has received the COMSTECH International Award, the 22nd Khwarizmi International Award in Basic Science and the International Award from Tehran University, among others. He was the vice president of the University College of Sciences at the University of Tehran for more than three years, ending in 2007. He was the head of the School of Mathematics at the Institute for Research in Fundamental Sciences for more than two years. In 2015 he started to act as the head of the school of Mathematics, statistics and computer sciences at the University of Tehran. In 2018 he was elected by The World Academy of Sciences as a fellow member. That would make him the first Iranian mathematician who's ever been a member of TWAS. In 2019 he was named Chevalier of the Ordre des Palmes Académiques for distinguished effort on extended multi-dimensional cooperation, including scientific research projects (Jundi-Shapur), student-and professor- exchanges, and several schools and conferences.

Zou Chenglu, better known as Chen-Lu Tsou, was a Chinese biochemist. He was a professor of the Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry and later a professor and Deputy Director of the Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He made important contributions to the synthesis of insulin, and was elected an academician of the CAS and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). He won the TWAS Prize in Biology in 1992 for his pioneering study of enzyme inhibition kinetics, and was a six-time laureate of the State Natural Science Award. His wife, physicist Li Lin, was also an academician of the CAS.

Syed Zafar Hasnain Zaidi Urdu: سید ظفر حسنین زیدی was a Pakistani scientific researcher, and professor who introduced the concept of Protein Chemistry in Pakistan. He served as Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi, Pakistan. He was decorated twice by the Government of Pakistan for his contributions to Scientific Research in Pakistan, being awarded Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in 1989 and Sitar-e-Imtiaz in 1995. He was also awarded the Khwarizmi International Award in 1992 by the Government of Iran for his research in Science.

Ali-Akbar Saboury is an Iranian biochemist and Distinguished Professor of Biophysical Chemistry at the University of Tehran. He is known for his works on biothermodynamics, enzyme kinetics and calorimetry.
