Alister Foot (born 15 June 1987) is an Australian world champion lightweight rower. He won a gold medal at the 2011 World Rowing Championships in Bled in the lightweight men's eight. [1]
Raised in Tasmania, Foot's senior club rowing was from the Tamar Rowing Club in Launceston. Much of his state and international career was in boats with his Tamar teammate Blair Tunevitsch.
In 2009, 2013 and 2014 Foot was selected to represent Tasmania in the men's lightweight four contesting the Penrith Cup at the Interstate Regatta within the Australian Rowing Championships. [2] Such was the depth of Tasmanian lightweight rowing during Foot's career, that from 2010 to 2012 when he was in the Australian lightweight eight, he was unable to secure a seat in the Tasmanian state lightweight four. In 2009 and 2010 in Tamar colours and rowing in composite Tasmanian crews, Foot won the national lightweight eight championship title at the Australian Rowing Championships. [4] [5]
Foot was first selected to represent Australian at the 2008 World Rowing U23 Championships in Brandenburg where he raced in a lightweight quad scull to an overall 8th placing. [6] The following year he stroked a lightweight double scull in front of Angus Moreton at the 2009 World Rowing U23 Championships in Racice. They placed fifteenth. [6]
In 2010 at the World Championships in Lake Karapiro, Foot was seated at four in the Australian men's lightweight eight who placed second and won the silver medal. [6] The lightweight eight stayed together into 2011 with the changeout of Perry Ward and Angus Tyers for Rod Chisolm and Tom Gibson and a move of Darryn Purcell into the stroke seat. At the 2011 World Championships in Bled they raced their final to perfection coming through the field from the 500mark, sitting second at the 1000 and the 1500, and running down the Italians in the last 200m to take the gold by 0.17seconds, winning Foot his first and only World Championship title. In 2012 at Rowing World Cups II and III in Lucerne and Munich, Foot raced in a coxless pair with Blair Tunevitsch to two bronze medal placings. Foot, Tunevitsch and Thomas Bertrand from the 2011 world champion eight stayed on and contested the lightweight eight at the 2012 World Rowing Championships in Plovdiv. The 2012 eight placed fifth. Foot continued to represent Australia at the elite world level till 2014. He won a bronze medal at the 2013 World Rowing Cup I in Sydney in a lightweight four and also raced in the lightweight eight at that regatta. He represented Australia in two crews at the 2013 World Rowing Championships in Chungju placing tenth in the coxless four and second in the eight winning his fourth world championship medal – a silver. [6] In 2014 he competed in the lightweight coxless four at the World Rowing Cup I in Sydney and in a coxless pair at World Rowing Cup III in Lucerne and then at the 2014 World Championships. The pair finished sixth – Foot's last Australian representative appearance. [6]
Anthony John Edwards is an Australian former lightweight rower. He is a five time Olympian, triple Olympic medallist, a world champion and a six-time Australian national champion. He represented Australia at the premier world regattas consistently over a twenty-year period from 1993 to 2012.
David William Crawshay is an Australian former rower, an eleven-time national champion, an Olympic champion and medalist at World Championships. He represented Australia in rowing at three consecutive Olympic games from Athens 2004 to London 2012.
Ross Brown is an Australian former national and world champion lightweight rower.
Michael McBryde is an Australian former lightweight rower. He was a national champion, an U23 World Champion and a medallist at senior World Championships.
Brendan Long is an Australian former representative rower. He twice represented at World Rowing Championships in a quad scull, is a dual Olympian and an Olympic record holder. He was an eight time Australian national champion in sculling boats and contested the national championship in the men's double scull every year from 1999 to 2009, winning that particular title on four occasions.
Glen Loftus is an Australian former lightweight rower. He was a national champion, an U23 world champion and an Olympic silver medalist. In competitive retirement he was a coach and a rowing administrator in Western Australia.
Benjamin Cureton is an Australian former lightweight rower. He was an eight-time national champion, a world champion and a three-time Olympian. He won his world championship in the men's lightweight fours, and an Olympic silver medal in that boat class in Athens 2004. He competed at two further Olympics in this discipline. For a twelve-year period from 2001 – excepting 2009 and 2010 – Cureton held his seat in all the Australian lightweight coxless fours selected to race at the premier world regattas.
Samuel Beltz is an Australian former lightweight rower. He is a 16-time national champion, a world champion and dual Olympian. He competed at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics and represented Australia at the premier world class regattas over a fifteen-year period from 1999 to 2014.
Thomas Gibson is an Australian lightweight rower. He is a twelve-time Australian national champion, a world champion and a dual Olympian.
Gary Lynagh is an eleven time Australian national champion, three time World Champion and Olympian lightweight rower. He represented Australia at every premier international regatta from 1990 to 1998.
Blair Tunevitsch is an Australian former lightweight rower – a five time national champion and world champion. He won a gold medal at the 2011 World Rowing Championships in Bled with the lightweight men's eight.
Darryn Purcell is an Australian former national and world champion lightweight rower. He won a gold medal at the 2011 World Rowing Championships in Bled with the lightweight men's eight.
Alice McNamara is an Australian former representative lightweight rower. She was a national champion and a back-to-back world champion in 2007 and 2008. She represented Australia at nine successive World Rowing Championships in lightweight sculling events.
Deon Birtwistle is an Australian lightweight rower. He was three times a national champion, an U23 World Champion and a silver medallist at the 2003 World Championships. He continued to compete at the national elite level into his 40s.
Georgia Miansarow is an English born, Australian representative lightweight rower. She is a three-time national champion and won medals at both World Rowing U23 Championships and senior World Rowing Championships in crewed sculling boats.
Perry Ward is an Australian national representative lightweight rower. He rowed in Western Australia's state selection lightweight crew for thirteen consecutive years from 2006 to 2018, winning the national title on four occasions. He represented Australia at eight senior and U23 world championships, stroking every crew in which he was selected and winning a silver medal at the 2010 World Rowing Championships.
Stephen Spurling is an Australian former lightweight rower. He was an Australian national representative at four World Rowing Championships. He won a silver medal at the 1983 World Rowing Championships.
Sean Murphy is an Australian representative lightweight rower. He is a 2018 Australian national champion; won bronze medals at senior and U/23 World Championships as a lightweight sculler; and in 2019 won two gold medals in lightweight sculling at Rowing World Cups in the international representative season.
