Alkalicoccus saliphilus is a Gram-positive and haloalkaliphilic bacterium from the genus of Alkalicoccus . [1] [3] It was first isolated from the algal mat of a mineral pool in the Malvizza mud volcanoes of Campania and can tolerate concentrations of up to 25% sodium chloride. [2]

Virgibacillus is a genus of Gram-positive, rod-shaped (bacillus) bacteria and a member of the phylum Bacillota. Virgibacillus species can be obligate aerobes, or facultative anaerobes and catalase enzyme positive. Under stressful environmental conditions, the bacteria can produce oval or ellipsoidal endospores in terminal, or sometimes subterminal, swollen sporangia. The genus was recently reclassified from the genus Bacillus in 1998 following an analysis of the species V. pantothenticus. Subsequently, a number of new species have been discovered or reclassified as Virgibacillus species.

The Malvizza mud volcanoes are the largest array of mud volcanoes in the southern Apennines of Italy. The phenomenon is purely sedimentary in nature, in contrast to volcanic phenomena like mofette, fumaroles, and solfatare. The Malvizza mud volcanoes show some affinities with the salse of the central-northern Apennines and with the maccalube of Sicily.
