Alphonse Puthren is an Indian film director, film producer, actor, editor, screenwriter and ad film maker. He works mainly in the Malayalam Cinema. He made his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed Malayalam - Tamil bilingual suspense-thriller Neram (2013). His second film was the sensational blockbuster coming-of-age romantic film Premam (2015). [1] After 7 years, he came back with Gold starring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Nayanthara in the lead roles. Alphonse Puthren was born in Aluva, Kerala to Daisy Chacko and Puthren Paul of the Manjooran house. [3] He attended schools including Mount Tabor School Kalamassery, St. Aloysius High School North Paravur and higher secondary from Amrita Vidyalayam. He did his Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA) from MES College Marampally, Aluva and later moved on to Chennai, earning a diploma in film making from S. A. E. College, Chennai.
Alphonse is married to Aleena Mary Anthony since 26 August 2015. [4] [5] She is the daughter of popular film producer Alwyn Anthony, who is the owner of Ananya Films. They have a son Ethan (born 2016) [6] [7] and daughter Aina (born 2018). [8]
After graduating, Alphonse started making short films and music videos. Arkan and Sutrum Vizhi were his earliest works, completed in college. In 2008, he made the short film Cling Cling. His next work was Neram, a short film which featured Vijay Sethupathi playing a pivotal character. Alphonse later made the music video Flavours, the video of which was shot using stop motion technique. His next short film was The Angel, employing actors Vijay Sethupathi and Bobby Simha in lead roles. Puthren directed the Malayalam music video Dhaaham, with music by Rajesh Murugesan. Puthren directed the music video Nenjodu Cherthu from the album Yuvvh , with music by Saachin-Sreejith. The video starring Nivin Pauly and Nazriya Nazim became "hugely popular". [9] His next short film was Eli - a sexy tale which had Bobby Simha, Nivin Pauly and Rajeev Pillai as part of the cast and was produced by actor/director/singer Vineeth Sreenivasan.
Puthren made his entry into the field of advertising by directing the commercial for Bangs Fried Chicken, a fast food chain.
He made his debut in feature films in 2013 with Neram , the full-length feature film version of his short film. The film is bilingual in Tamil and Malayalam and starred Nivin Pauly, Nazriya Nazim and Bobby Simha in lead roles. [10] He wrote the screenplay and also edited the film. [11] He directed the film Premam in 2015 which starred Nivin Pauly, while also writing the screenplay, editing and acting in a cameo role in the film. The film went on to become a blockbuster at the box office and became one of the highest grossing Malayalam films of all time. In April 2017, Alphonse issued a statement in his social media saying that his third directorial film would be a Tamil language film. [12]
Alphonse Puthren edited the trailers of Thattathin Marayathu [13] (directed by Vineeth Sreenivasan) and Oppam [14] (directed by Priyadarshan) and Marakkar (directed by Priyadarshan). He also edited the "Ding Dong Promo Cut" for the film Super Deluxe .

Nivin Pauly is an Indian actor and producer who works predominantly in Malayalam films. He is the recipient of two Kerala State Film Awards, three Filmfare Awards South, two Kerala Film Critics Association Awards, and six SIIMA Awards. He made his acting debut in Vineeth Sreenivasan's directorial debut, Malarvaadi Arts Club in 2010. The 2012 film Thattathin Marayathu pushed him into stardom.

It was sung by Sachin Warrier and actress Remya Nambeesan. The song was one of the most popular Malayalam songs of 2012 and won several awards. It was later reused in the Telugu remake of Thattathin Marayathu, Saheba Subramanyam, as "Muddu Muddu".
Neram (transl. 'Time') is a 2013 Indian black comedy thriller film written, directed and edited by Alphonse Puthren in his directorial debut. It is simultaneously made in Malayalam and Tamil languages. It is an extended version of the short film of the same name, which he directed in 2009. It stars Nivin Pauly, Nazriya Nazim and Bobby Simha in both versions. Supporting roles were played by Manoj K. Jayan, Shammi Thilakan, Lalu Alex, and Willson Joseph in Malayalam version, while Nassar, Thambi Ramiah, John Vijay and Shabareesh Varma portrayed the characters in Tamil version.
Oru Vadakkan Selfie is a 2015 Indian Malayalam-language road-comedy film directed by G. Prajith and scripted by Vineeth Sreenivasan. The film features Nivin Pauly, Manjima Mohan, Aju Varghese, Neeraj Madhav, and Vineeth Sreenivasan. The music was composed by Shaan Rahman. It was released on 27 March to positive reviews, and became one of the biggest grossing Malayalam films of the year. Some news media and the Kerala Film Producers Association called it the first successful Malayalam film of 2015. This movie marks the debut of Manjima Mohan as an actress in a Malayalam movie. Earlier, she appeared as a child artist in films, including Priyam and Sundara Purushan. The film was remade in Telugu as Meda Meeda Abbayi. The 2017 Bengali movie Bolo Dugga Maiki was partially based on this movie.
Premam (transl. Love) is a 2015 Indian Malayalam-language coming of age romance film written, directed and edited by Alphonse Puthren. It was produced by Anwar Rasheed and stars Nivin Pauly and Sai Pallavi. It also features with an ensemble supporting cast including Madonna Sebastian, Anupama Parameswaran, Shabareesh Varma, Krishna Sankar, Siju Wilson, Ananth Nag, Vinay Forrt, Soubin Shahir, Sharafudheen and others. The plot follows George (Nivin)’s romantic journey with his friends from their teens to adulthood. While George's first love turns out to be a disappointment, Malar (Pallavi), a college lecturer, rekindles his love interest. His romantic journey takes him through several stages, helping him find his purpose.

Premam is the soundtrack album for the 2015 Malayalam film of the same name directed by Alphonse Puthren and starring Nivin Pauly. The original soundtrack and background score were composed by Rajesh Murugesan, who had collaborated with Puthren in the film Neram (2013). Shabareesh Varma, beside singing, wrote the lyrics for eight of the nine songs. One song "Rockaankuthu" which had lyrics written by Pradeep Palarr was sung by Tamil film composer Anirudh Ravichander. It was jointly produced by Supriya Menon of Prithviraj Productions and Listin Stephen of Magic Frames. The film stars Prithviraj Sukumaran and Nayanthara, along with an ensemble supporting cast of Deepti Sati, Mallika Sukumaran, Lalu Alex, Ajmal Ameer, Baburaj, Shammi Thilakan, Shanthi Krishna, Jagadish, Krishna Sankar, Roshan Mathew, Vinay Forrt, Shabareesh Varma and Saiju Kurup.
Thattathin Marayathu is the soundtrack to the 2012 film of the same name directed by Vineeth Sreenivasan starring Nivin Pauly and Isha Talwar. The soundtrack featured 10 songs composed by Shaan Rahman and lyrics written by Sreenivasan himself along with Anu Elizabeth Jose and Engandiyur Chandrasekharan.
