Altigena is a genus of cyprinid freshwater fish found in the continental part of South East Asia. This genus was resurrected from Bangana by Maurice Kottelat in 2017. [2]
The generic name was originally intended as a subgenus of Osteochilus by a Chinese author Lin, and describes the distinguishing feature, alluding to altus, "high" and γένυς (génys), "chin". As Lin did not designate a type species, authorship was granted to Burton, the editor of the Zoological Record. [3]
Altigena contains the following valid species: [4]
Siganidae, the rabbitfishes, are a small family of ray-finned fishes in the order Perciformes. The only extant genus is Siganus, the rabbitfish and spinefoot. However, a number of genera are known from fossils.
Brachypterois is a genus of marine ray-finned fishes belonging to the family Scorpaenidae, the scorpionfishes. They are native to the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean.
Parascorpaena is a genus of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Scorpaenidae, the scorpionfishes. They are native to the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean.
Pogonoscorpius is a genus of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Scorpaenidae, the scorpionfishes. It is a monotypic genus, its ony species is Pogonoscorpius sechellensis which occurs in the western Indian Ocean in the seas around the Seychelles. It is a little known species and, as of 2018, only 2 specimens were known from the Seychelles. It may also occur in the Coral Sea and off Japan and it has been suggested that this taxon is a synonym of Rhinopias argoliba. Others treat it as a valid species and state that it is endemic to the western Indian Ocean.
Hemimyzon is a genus of freshwater ray-finned fish belonging to the family Balitoridae, the river or hillstream loaches. The species in this genus are found in eastern Asia.
Onychostoma is a genus of cyprinid fish found in eastern Asia.
Poropuntius krempfi is a species of ray-finned fish in the genus Poropuntius from the Red River drainage in Vietnam and Yunnan, and from the Ma River drainage in Vietnam and Laos.
Beaufortia is a genus of gastromyzontid loaches from China and mainland Southeast Asia.
Eonemachilus obtusirostris is a species of ray-finned fish, a stone loach in the genus Eonemachilus. Its type locality is the West Dragon Spring, which flows into Fuxian Lake in Chengjiang County, Yunnan. In the past this species was classified in the genus Yunnanilus, although it was thought that it may have been in Heminoemacheilus rather than Yunnanilus. The specific name is a compound of the Latin rostrum meaning a "beak" and obtusus meaning "blunt", this refers to the species' short snout.
Balitora is a genus of ray-finned fishes in the family Balitoridae endemic to Asia.
Erromyzon is a genus of fish in the family Gastromyzontidae endemic to China and Vietnam.
Liniparhomaloptera is a genus of fish in the family Gastromyzontidae found in China and Vietnam.
Vanmanenia is a genus of loaches from China and mainland Southeast Asia.
Bangana is a genus of fish in the family Cyprinidae, the carps and minnows. It is distributed across much of southern and eastern Asia. Species live mainly in the flowing waters of tropical and subtropical rivers.
Sinilabeo is a genus of cyprinid freshwater fish found in China and Vietnam.
Adrianichthys is a genus of ricefishes. The genus is endemic to Lake Poso in Sulawesi, Indonesia. All four species are considered seriously threatened and two of these, A. kruyti and A. roseni, have not been recorded for decades, leading to fears that they already are extinct. Adrianichthys are larger than the Oryzias ricefish, reaching lengths of 8.5–17.1 cm (3.3–6.7 in) depending on the exact species involved. The name of this genus is a compound ending in the Greek ichthys for "fish" with the first part honouring the linguist and missionary Nicolaus Adriani (1865-1926), who collected specimens around Lake Poso.
Satyrichthys is a genus of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Peristediidae, the armoured gurnards or armored searobins. These fishes are found in the Indo-Pacific region.
Pseudohomaloptera is a genus of freshwater ray-finned fish belonging to the family Balitoridae, the river or hillstream loaches. The species in this genus are found in eastern Asia.
Altigena laticeps is a species of cyprinid fish found in the Upper Mekong River basin in Yunnan, China. It was formerly considered a subspecies of Altigena tonkinensis.
Decorus is a genus of cyprinid freshwater fish found in China and India. This genus was split from Bangana in 2019.
