Amateur Night in the Big Top is the debut studio album by British singer Shaun Ryder, the former frontman of Happy Mondays and Black Grape. The album is subtitled "Clowns and Pet Sounds". It was released in September 2003 and co-produced by Pete Carroll, Shane Norton and Cabaret Voltaire's Stephen Mallinder. It was recorded in Perth, Australia and released on the OffWorld Sounds record label run by Ryder's Carroll and Mallinder.

Background and recording

In July 1998, vocalist Shaun Ryder said he would no longer be performing or recording with his band Black Grape. [1] By the end of the year, MTV reported that Ryder might be reuniting his other band Happy Mondays. [2] A reunion was confirmed in January 1999, with initially performance occurring in April 1999. [3] [4] In June 1999, MTV reported that the band were in the process of writing material for a new album. [5] As Happy Mondays' reunion continued beyond its intended six-month plan, Ryder started consumed a considerable amount of alcohol and took cocaine. Touring continued into early 2001, and while in Australia for the Big Day Out festival, Ryder decided that he had enough of the band. He stayed at his cousin's Pete Carroll house in Perth. He thought the quiet location would be a good opportunity to go cold turkey from his previous heroin addiction. [6]

Despite not wanting to make any music while in the country, Carroll thought it would be something to distract Ryder with. [6] In April 2001, it was reported that Ryder had started recorded an album; sessions continued into July 2002. [7] [8] Carroll served as the executive producer on the project. Shane Norton of Kuling Bros produced and engineered the material at Spin Studios in Sydney, Australia; former Cabaret Voltaire member Stephen Mallinder acted as co-producer on "Scooter Girl", "Clowns" and "Murder". [9] Ryder recorded his vocals in Carroll's make-shift studio in his garage, which were recorded by Carroll and Norton. [6] [9] Adam McElnea mastered the album at Sonamax in Balmain, New South Wales. [9]

Ryder heard tracks Carroll and Shane Norton were working on for Offworld Sounds. "Our Pete just said, 'Tell us a story.' I've got that many, Pete reckoned I should record them once and for all" said Shaun Ryder. "I'm kind of a novelist in the way that 9/11 was a Great American Novel" the singer added.

Composition and lyrics

AllMusic reviewer Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote that the music "sometimes arriv[es] at bracingly atmospheric beats equal parts dub and trip-hop". [10] The Age writer Andrew Drever said Ryder's "meandering, stream-of-consciousness stories and loose scatting is set to the tough, dubby, electronic instrumentals" provided by Mallinder and Noron. [11] In his autobiography Twisting My Melon: The Autobiography (2011), Ryder recounted that "because I was going cold turkey I was coming down and sweating all the time [...] not in a great place mentally", resulting in the stream-of-consciousness lyrics. [6]

The album's opening track, "The Story", is an Eastern-inspired psychedelic track about excessive drug use and a planet flight. [11] "Long Legs (Parts 1 2 3)" sees Ryder rap about his financial situation; Dever said Ryder "gloriously diffus[es] his pent-up anger with some true soul and blue-eyed tunefulness". [11] "Scooter Girl" evoked the sound of Happy Mondays with its upbeat horn section and the Madchester groove. [11] "Clowns" combines echo chamber-enhanced horns with dub music; Ryder said it was about his Black Grape bandmate Paul "Wags" Wagstaff's fear of clowns. [11] [12] "In 1987" sees Ryder recount his first experience taking ecstasy. [11]

Ryder made his debut performance as a solo artist at V Festival in August 2002. [8] On 27 May 2003, Ryder's debut solo album was announced for release later that year under the moniker Clowns and Pet Sounds. [17] "Scooter Girl" was released as the lead single from it on 16 June 2003, with remixes of "Clowns" and "Scooter Girl" was the B-sides. [17] [18] Amateur Night in the Big Top was released through Offworld Sounds on 7 July 2003; it was released in Japan in May 2004 with remixes of "Whizz Wheels" and "Giving Out Loans to Perfect People with Brittle Bones" as bonus tracks. [14] [19] It was reissued in 2012 with new artwork and the Japanese bonus tracks through dPulse Recordings. [20]

Amateur Night in the Big Top was met with mixed reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, the album received an average score of 51, based on ten reviews. [13] Erlewine found Ryder's "inspired, mad verse takes second billing to the echoing club beats of it all". Unlike his earlier material, Ryder "rides the beat, never once propelling it with his exquisite bad taste and absurd pan-cultural irreverence". [10] Drever said Ryder was "mostly as incomprehensible as ever, but the cheeky mischief and surreal sense of humour [...] is still intact". [11] In a review for The Guardian , writer Alexis Petridis said Ryder mumbles "incoherently over tepid dance beats", while the music was "tuneless, [and] that's the least of its problems". He goes on call Ryder himself the biggest issue, as he "clearly has no idea how pitiful he sounds relating ancient tales of chemical derring-do". [15]

In his book Happy Mondays – Excess All Areas: A Biography (2014), author Simon Spence called it "astonishingly warped, musically minimal, and brilliant". [21] Matt Galloway of Now wrote that several years removed from the height of fame, Ryder "doesn’t seem to have anything else to say", adding that the "most profound moments are the curse words". [16] Dotmusic 's Dan Gennoe said on tracks such as "Long Legs (Parts 1 2 3)" and "Clowns", Ryder was "dribbling old soak talking to himself on a park bench [...] – barely conscious, never mind coherent". [14]

NME said "It's genius. His talent is akin to Eminem. He's a great chronicler of down and dirty street life". Uncut said "It's terrifying, exhilarating stuff, just like 9/11. Another wildly implausible Ryder comeback. Just when we needed one. Embrace his soul vision".

After finalising their line-up, the band began playing local venues in Manchester, toured with New Order, and released an EP and a single in 1985. Happy Mondays' debut album was recorded at Fire House in London in December 1986 with producer John Cale. Halfway through the two weeks of sessions, they scrapped all their recordings and began again. Cale and engineer Dave Young did not understand the band members' vision of the album, and found them difficult to work with. Deemed a punk-funk and post-punk album, most of its songs were lyrically akin to stories on The Twilight Zone.

Bummed is the second studio album by English rock band Happy Mondays, released on 21 November 1988 on Factory Records. During 1987 and early 1988, the band discovered house music and the rave drug ecstasy. Factory producer Martin Hannett was subsequently enlisted to produce the band's next album. Sessions were held at The Slaughterhouse recording studio in Driffield over three weeks. The period was noted for heavy drug use by the band and Hannett, with their manager later calling it the first "ecstasy-fuelled" album. Hannett moved recording to Strawberry Studios, where extra instrumentation was added. Bummed is a Madchester-style psychedelic funk album, where much of the lyrical content was influenced by the 1970 film Performance, with dialogue from the film sampled throughout.

Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches is the third studio album by the English rock band Happy Mondays, released on 5 November 1990 by Factory Records. Disc jockey (DJ) Paul Oakenfold and collaborator Steve Osborne were previously enlisted by the band for remixes. The success of these led to the pair producing "Step On", a cover of the John Kongos song, for Happy Mondays. The band went on a tour of the United States, and by the end of which, had started recording their next album with Oakenfold and Osborne at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, California. They returned to the United Kingdom, where further recording took place at Eden Studios in London until September 1990. Described as a Madchester album, Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches saw substantial input from Oakenfold and Osborne, with the former making loops while the latter handled song arrangements.

Yes Please! is the fourth studio album by British rock band Happy Mondays, released on 22 September 1992 through Factory Records. Following the non-album single "Judge Fudge", Factory allotted the band a budget of £150,000 for their next album. After settling on producers Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, both members of Talking Heads and Tom Tom Club, Happy Mondays decamped to Blue Wave Studio in Saint Philip, Barbados, in February 1992. The sessions were plagued by a variety of issues, such as frontman Shaun Ryder developing a crack habit and dancer Bez breaking his arm three times. With little finished material and a lack of lyrics, the band returned to the United Kingdom; Ryder was admitted into a detox centre. Recording continued for two weeks in May 1992 at Comfort's Place Studio in Lingfield, Surrey, where Ryder did his vocals. Yes Please! is a soul funk album with a bleak sound that earned it a comparison to Unknown Pleasures (1979) by Joy Division.

Anthology is the second studio album by American rock band Alien Ant Farm. It was released on March 6, 2001, through New Noize and DreamWorks Records. Free All Angels is the third studio album to be recorded by Northern Irish rock band Ash. It was released on 23 April 2001 through Infectious Records and Home Grown. Due to the mixed reaction to the band's second studio album Nu-Clear Sounds (1998), frontman Tim Wheeler suffered from depression. He went to his parents' house in Northern Ireland to write material for the band's next album. Central Station Design is a Mancunian design company founded by Pat Carroll, Karen Jackson, and Matt Carroll. It is usually associated with Factory Records and the Madchester scene of the early 1990s. The company created album cover artwork and posters for Factory artists including The Happy Mondays, Black Grape, and James. Their design for the Happy Mondays' Madchester Rave On E.P. in late 1989 became the iconic logo for the movement. Their work came to represent the movement so clearly that Factory Records owner and radio presenter Tony Wilson said, "The second half of the Factory story is best summed up by the painterly eccentricity of Central Station." Initial sessions were held at The Studiosound in Rochdale and Make It Nice Studio in Leicester with Dave Parkinson, before moving to Moolah Rogue Studios in Stockport with Levine. Pop Voodoo is the third studio album by British band Black Grape, released on 4 August 2017 through UMC. After a one-off show in 2010, Black Grape reunited to play a show in April 2015, by which point, they were being managed by Alan McGee. Following a tour of the United Kingdom and a collaboration with Paul Oakenfold, the band worked on a few ideas for new songs. They travelled to Spain in September 2016, initially as a writing trip, before it evolved into recording sessions for their next album. Recorded was done at Martin "Youth" Glover's residential studio in Sierra Nevada, Spain and in London. Pop Voodoo is a funk, pop and trip hop album that sees several instruments being played by Youth, alongside a variety of session musicians.

Happy Mondays – Excess All Areas: A Biography is a 2014 book about the history of British rock band Happy Mondays, authored by British writer Simon Spence. It was based on interviews conducted in 2013 and 2014 with members of the band and their associates. It covers their main period of activity, from their formation in the early 1980s until their break up in the early 1990s, as well as detailing the history of Factory Records and its founder Tony Wilson. The book received mainly positive reviews from music publications, several of which praised Spence's research. Paperback and an expanded ebook versions were released in 2015 and 2018, respectively.
