Elvan Abeylegesse, is an Ethiopian-born Turkish middle and long-distance running athlete who competes over distances from 1500 metres up to the marathon, and also in cross country. She is the former world record-holder for the 5000 metres, at 14:24.68 minutes.
Susan Chepkemei is a Kenyan long-distance runner, who competes in the 10,000 metres and marathon. In 2001, she won the Rotterdam Marathon and came first in the Great North Run, as well as winning the silver medal in the World Half Marathon Championships. She won also won the silver medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in the 10,000 m.

She has competed at the World Championships in Athletics on three occasions and represented Austria at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Her best international performance was a silver medal over 3000 m at the 2005 European Athletics Indoor Championships. She also had a fourth-place finish in that event at the 2002 edition, which was held in her home city. She tested positive at an international competition for the banned substance rh-EPO in 2008, and was banned from competition for two years for the infraction. She was later proved to have obtained EPO during 2008, at the time her ban was ongoing, which resulted in disqualification of all her times in 2010 and 2011 and an eight-year ban from competition.
Shitaye Gemechu is an Ethiopian long-distance runner, who specializes in marathon races. Shitaye was the women's winner of the Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon for the years 2004 - 2006. She won the 2007 edition of the Treviso Marathon.

As a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Code, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) prohibits the use of banned performance-enhancing substances by competitors at the World Championships in Athletics. A list of WADA-banned substances is regularly published to the public and amended as scientific knowledge expands. The IAAF and anti-doping bodies undertake in-competition sampling of athletes blood and urine in order to detect where athletes have taken banned substances. This is also complemented by out-of-competition tests during the tournament and in the preceding period.
