Jadavpur University is a public state funded research and technology university with its main campus located at Jadavpur,Kolkata,West Bengal,India. It was established on 25 July 1906 as Bengal Technical Institute and was converted into Jadavpur University in 1955. As of 2024 NIRF rankings,Jadavpur University has been ranked 9th among universities,12th among engineering institutes,and 17th overall in India. Also Nature Index ranked Jadavpur University in 1st among universities in India and 22th overall in India in terms of research output (2023-2024). The university has been recognized by UGC as an institute with "Potential for Excellence" and accredited an "A+" grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was an Indian Bengali novelist,poet,essayist and journalist. He was the author of the 1882 Bengali language novel Anandamath,which is one of the landmarks of modern Bengali and Indian literature. He was the composer of Vande Mataram,written in highly Sanskritised Bengali,personifying India as a mother goddess and inspiring activists during the Indian Independence Movement. Chattopadhayay wrote fourteen novels and many serious,serio-comic,satirical,scientific and critical treatises in Bengali. He is known as Sahitya Samrat in Bengali.
Presidency University,formerly Presidency College,is a public state university located in College Street,Kolkata. The institution was elevated to university status in 2010 after functioning as a constituent college of the University of Calcutta. Founded in 1817,it is one of the oldest places of higher education in India. Alumni of Presidency University include two Nobel laureates,leaders of the Indian Independence Movement,heads of state,Academy Award winners and pioneers in Bengali art and literature.
Stephen P. Stich is an American academic who is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Cognitive Science Emeritus at Rutgers University,as well as an Honorary Professor in Philosophy at the University of Sheffield. Stich's main philosophical interests are in the philosophy of mind,epistemology,and moral psychology. His 1983 book,From Folk Psychology to Cognitive Science:The Case Against Belief,received much attention as he argued for a form of eliminative materialism about the mind. He changed his mind,in later years,as indicated in his 1996 book Deconstructing the Mind.
Rimi B. Chatterjee is an Indian writer of science fiction,screenwriter,translator,comics creator and former professor of English literature at Jadavpur University,Kolkata,India. Her first novel Signal Red was published in 2005 by Penguin India,followed by City of Love and Black Light. She is known for near-future dystopian and climate fiction and historical fantasy. Most of her recent stories are set in the Antisense Universe,a climate-positive alternate future world. She was active in the 2014 Jadavpur University Protests.
Jasodhara Bagchi was a leading Indian feminist professor,author,critic and activist. She was the founder and director of the School of Women's Studies at Jadavpur University. Her books include Loved and Unloved –The Girl Child and Trauma and Triumph –Gender and Partition in Eastern India. She also founded the women's rights organization Sachetana.
Rudrangshu Mukherjee is a historian and author of several history books. He was formerly the Opinions Editor for The Telegraph newspaper,Kolkata and the Chancellor for Ashoka University,where he also serves as Professor of History. He was the founding Vice-Chancellor of Ashoka when the University began in 2014 and was succeeded in 2017 by Pratap Bhanu Mehta.

Professor Somnath Dasagupta was the vice-chancellor of Assam University till 13 November 2015 and professor of metamorphic geology at Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research,Kolkata.
Tista Bagchi,Professor of Linguistics in the University of Delhi,is a distinguished Indian linguist and ethicist. Bagchi trained in Sanskrit College,Kolkata,the University of Delhi,and the University of Chicago,from where she obtained her PhD in Linguistics,her work spans issues of semantics and syntax in languages in general and South Asian languages in particular,questions of ethics in the application of medical technology and social interaction,and translations of iconic texts in Bangla literature and comparative philology. Bagchi has also been active in the area of cognitive sciences with special interests in the relationships amongst sentence structure,computation,linguistic meaning,and human cognition. Bagchi was the Robert F. &Margaret S. Goheen Fellow for the academic year 2001–2002 at the National Humanities Center,Research Triangle Park,North Carolina,and a scientist under the CSIR Mobility Scheme at the National Institute of Science,Technology,and Development Studies,New Delhi,for two years during 2010–2012.
On 16 September 2014,peaceful demonstrations by students took place in front of the administrative building of the University,demanding an investigation into the alleged molestation of a female student in campus. After several unsuccessful attempts at dialogue with the authorities,the students gheraoed some personnel of the university authority,including Vice-Chancellor Abhijit Chakrabarti. The vice-chancellor called the police,who dispersed the students by force in the early hours of 17 September. This triggered a wave of protests by students and teachers.
Subodh Chandra Sengupta was an Indian scholar,academic and critic of English literature,known for his scholarship on Shakespearean works. His books on William Shakespeare,which included Aspects of Shakespearian Tragedy,Shakespearian Comedy and Shakespeare's Historical Plays are critically acclaimed for scholarship and academic rigor. He was a professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at Presidency College,Calcutta,and after retirement from Presidency College,became Professor of English Language and Literature at Jadavpur University,Calcutta,as well as a professor of English literature at Ramakrishna Mission Residential College,Narendrapur,an autonomous college in Greater Calcutta under the University of Calcutta. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan,in 1983,for his contributions to literature and education.
Samita Sen is an Indian historian and academic. Having previously taught at the University of Calcutta and Jadavpur University,she has been Vere Harmsworth Professor of Imperial and Naval History at the University of Cambridge since 2018.
Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee is an Indian academic who is the Vice Chancellor of West Bengal State University. She also served as the Vice Chancellor of University of Calcutta.
John Felix Raj is the a professor of economics at St. Xavier's University,Kolkata (SXUK),India. He is a Jesuit priest of the Calcutta province of the Society of Jesus. He was the Rector from 1996 to 2002 and Principal from 2009 to 2017 of St. Xavier's College,Kolkata.
Piyush Dasgupta was an Indian academician,author,a political activist,Marxist theoretician and a life-long communist. He was a member of the Communist Party of India and remained integral to the left movement in Bengal for four decades. In 1949 in Presidency Jail,Kolkata,Dasgupta led a fifty-six-day-long hunger strike for the rights of political prisoners. In the early 1960s,when Communist Party of India (Marxist) was banned,Dasgupta was enlisted in the underground leadership along with two stalwarts of the party. A professor of economics and political science,Dasgupta was instrumental in the cause of Marxist discourse in Bengal. He was part of the editorial team of People's Democracy (newspaper),Deshhitaishee,the head of the National Book Agency and the author of multiple books and articles. One of Dasgupta's legacies is the complete translation of ‘Das Kapital’to Bengali. It was possibly a first in any Indian language and was accomplished at the behest of Muzaffar Ahmad,co-founder of the Communist Party of India.
