Anderson Tanoto is a member of the board of trustees at Tanoto Foundation, a philanthropic organization involved in poverty alleviation through education, "empowerment" and "the enhancement of the quality of lives". [1] Tanoto is the youngest son of businessman and philanthropist Sukanto Tanoto. He received his education from University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in economics. [2] In October 2017, he was named to The Wharton School's "40 Under 40" list, [3] which seeks to recognise impressive young Wharton alumni. Tanoto also sits on the Wharton Executive Board of Asia. Career

After graduation, Tanoto became a consultant at Bain & Company focusing in consumer products and financial services. While at Bain, he acquired expertise within Southeast Asia, working with clients in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. [5]

Tanoto joined Royal Golden Eagle (RGE) in March 2013 and currently serves as managing director. [2] Founded by his father, Sukanto Tanoto, RGE manages a group of resource-based manufacturing companies operating in Indonesia, China, Brazil, Canada and Europe, with over US$35 billion in assets and a workforce of 70,000 people. [5] He spends most of his time leading RGE-managed APRIL's operations located in Pangkalan Kerinci, Riau, Indonesia. [6] He is also involved in the company's business transformation [5] and received praise for his approach to growing the business efficiently and personally emphasizing the company's commitment to sustainability. At COP 21 on 1 December 2015, Tanoto was part of a team that announced APRIL's US$100 million investment in an expanded eco-restoration project in Riau, spanning 150,000 hectares. [9] He also provides strategic direction on the Riau Ecosystem Restoration project in Kampar, Sumatra, Indonesia.[ citation needed ]

Further to this, Tanoto was involved in developing the Fire-Free Village Programme, which launched July 2015 and involved cultivating and incentivizing villages in Riau to adopt fire prevention practices. [10] The according to the Programme, they have helped drive a significant reduction in fires in participating villages, and was later scaled from 9 to 20 villages in 2016. [11] At the Responsible Business Forum in Jakarta in February 2017, Tanoto was a panelist as the Fire Free Alliance—an industry group comprising members APRIL, Asian Agri, IDH, Musim Mas, PM.Haze, and Wilmar—marked its first anniversary in contributing solutions to Indonesia's persistent fire and haze problems with a focus on fire prevention through community engagement. On 2 May 2018, Tanoto was appointed Chairman of the Brazil Committee under the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN). The committee was set up to boost trade relations and technology transfer between Indonesia and Brazil. [13]

Philanthropy

Apart from his business interests, Tanoto also works in community development and philanthropy, which was sparked in his youth when his parents frequently brought him and his siblings to Indonesian fields and plantations. [3] He is actively involved in the Tanoto Foundation, a non-profit charitable organization founded in 1981 by the Tanoto family to reduce poverty through education, empowerment and enhancement. As a member of the Board of Trustees of Tanoto Foundation, Tanoto drives various foundation initiatives focusing on Indonesia's next generation. [5]

He initiated a seed funding program for Tanoto Foundation scholars to promote entrepreneurship, and actively participates in the Tanoto Entrepreneurship Series (TES) where prominent speakers such as Jusuf Kalla and then-Jakarta governor Joko Widodo have spoken to the students and scholars of Tanoto Foundation. Sukanto Tanoto, born Tan Kang Hoo is an Indonesian businessman primarily involved in resources-based manufacturing. After starting as a supplier of equipment and materials for the state-owned oil firm Pertamina, Tanoto moved into the forest industry in 1973. Tanoto's business interests are represented by the Royal Golden Eagle (RGE) group of companies, previously known as Raja Garuda Mas.

The Fire Free Alliance (FFA) is a multi-stakeholder group initiated for the management of recurrent haze and fire problems occurring in Indonesia. The group was founded in 2016 by APRIL and Asian Agri, Musim Mas, Wilmar, and NGOs including PM.Haze, Rumah Pohon, and IDH. The FFA seeks to achieve fire prevention mainly via community engagement. As of 2017, FFA's initiatives are being implemented in more than 200 villages in Indonesia, covering more than 1.5 million hectares of land.

People's Movement to Stop Haze (PM.Haze) is a non-governmental organisation based in Singapore. It was founded in 2014 in response to the 2013 Southeast Asian haze, which has been recognised as one of the most serious haze episodes in over 16 years. PM.Haze started its work with an investigative research project to fire-prone areas in Riau Province, Indonesia and identified peatland degradation due to mismanagement of concession lands by irresponsible companies as the fundamental cause of the fires in the areas and the resulting transboundary haze pollution. In 2016, it became registered as a society. In 2017, it underwent a rebranding exercise and adopted a new logo to symbolise a constant flow for fresh, clean air with an arrow pointed upward to represent constructive action towards this. PM.Haze was mentioned by Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkifli as he delivered Singapore's national statement at the United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi in December 2017.

Riau Andalan Pulp & Paper (RAPP) is the main pulp and paper subsidiary of Asia Pacific Resources International Holdings Limited, or APRIL Group. Operating in Riau Province, Sumatra, Indonesia, RAPP runs one of the largest pulp mills in the world.

Asia Pacific Rayon (APR) is one of the largest viscose-rayon producers in Asia, with annual capacity of 300,000 tons of viscose-rayon. The company is based in Pangkalan Kerinci, Riau, Indonesia. The company produces renewable and biodegradable viscose-rayon, which is made from wood cellulose, and serves as an alternative to fossil-based synthetics in the textile industry. It is one of Royal Golden Eagle's business groups.
