Mar Andrews Thazhath (born 13 December 1951) is an Indian Catholic prelate and Archeparch of Thissur in the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church.
"He holds Bachelor’s Degree in Theology and Doctor’s Degree in Eastern Canon Law (DOCL) form the Pontifical Oriental Institute, Rome. He was nominated the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Trichur on 19 March 2004 when he was serving as the president of the Syro-Malabar Major Archiepiscopal Ordinary Tribunal of Ernakulam – Angamaly, the Syncellus of the Archeparchy, the Working Chairman and Managing Director of Jeevan Telecasting Corporation and the President of the Oriental Canon Law Society of India. He was ordained Bishop on the 1 May 2004...He was the Secretary General and President of the Kerala Catholic Bishop’s Council (KCBC) and the Chairman of the KCBC Education Commission. He was the First Vice President of the CBCI. Pope Francis appointed him in 2021 as one of the members of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts. The Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts is a dicastery of the Roman Curia, which interprets the laws of the Church. Abp. Andrews Thazhath is a world-renowned expert in Oriental Code of Canon Law". [1] He is the third and the present metropolitan archbishop of Syro-Malabar Catholic Archeparchy of Thrissur from 2007. He was nominated as the archbishop succeeding Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy on 22 January 2007 and was installed to the office on 18 March 2007 by Cardinal Mar Varkey Vithayathil. [2] [3] [4] He is the founder of Legion of Apostolic Families (LOAF), a lay pious association of consecrated families founded in 2009.
On 30 July 2022 in addition to his current duties archbishop Thazhath was appointed as an Apostolic Administrator sede plena of the Major Archeparchy of Ernakulam–Angamaly. [5]
From 10 November 2022 he is the President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India [6]
On 07 December 2023, "the Holy Father Francis has accepted the resignation from the office of Apostolic Administrator of the archeparchy of Ernakuam-Angamaly of the Syro-Malabars, India, presented by Archbishop Andrews Thazhath, metropolitan of Trichur of the Syro-Malabars". [7]
The Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, is an Eastern Catholic Church based in Kerala, India. It is sui iuris (autonomous) particular Church in full communion with the Pope and the worldwide Catholic Church, including the Latin Church and the 22 other Eastern Catholic Churches, with self-governance under the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches (CCEO). The Church is headed by the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar, currently vacant. The Syro-Malabar Synod of Bishops canonically convoked and presided over by the Major Archbishop constitutes the supreme authority of the Church. The Major Archiepiscopal Curia of the Church is based in Kakkanad, Kochi. Syro-Malabar is a prefix reflecting the church's use of the East Syriac Rite liturgy and origins in Malabar. The name has been in usage in official Vatican documents since the nineteenth century.
Varkey Vithayathil was an Indian cardinal who served as the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church and Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly. He was also a religious priest of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer.
The Archeparchy of Changanacherry is a Syro-Malabar Catholic archeparchy with an area of 24,595 km2 comprising the districts of Kottayam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kollam, and Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, and also Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu. The Major Archeparchy of Ernakulam–Angamaly is the major archeparchy and the see of the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church. It has been the major archeparchy since 1992 when the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church was elevated to the status of a major archiepiscopal church with Ernakulam-Angamaly as the primatal see. The major archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly is the main bishop of the jurisdiction, at the same time the head of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church. The eparchies of Kothamangalam and Idukki are the two suffragan eparchies of the major archeparchy.
The St. Mary's Syro-Malabar Cathedral Basilica is a cathedral in Ernakulam, Kerala, India. It was founded in 1112, and is also known by the names Nasrani Palli, Anchikaimal Palli or Thekke Palli. The church is the headquarters of the Major Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly, which is the Primatal See of the Syro-Malabar Church. Currently it’s closed down and under police protection due to dispute between the rebels in the Ernakulam-Angamaly diocese and the Syro-Malabar Hierarchy.
The Syro-Malabar Catholic Archeparchy of Trichur-Palayoor, in Thrissur District of Central Kerala, India, with nearly half a million Syro-Malabar Catholics now, used to be the largest Catholic diocese in India when it included the Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Irinjalakuda until 1978 and Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy of Palghat until 1973. Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Irinjalakuda, also located in Thrissur District, has over a quarter million Syro-Malabar Catholics now. Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Palghat in Central Kerala extends to some regions in the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu. In 2010, the parts of Tamil Nadu under the Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Palghat were separated to form another Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese of Ramanathapuram.
Mar Antony Padiyara was a Syro Malabar Major Archbishop and cardinal. He was the First Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church. He was Major Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly from 1985 to 2000, having previously served as Bishop of Ootacamund (1955–1970) and Archbishop of Changanassery (1970–1985). He was elevated to the cardinalate in 1988.
Our Lady of Lourdes Metropolitan Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Kerala, is located in the heart of Thrissur City in the state of Kerala, India. Dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, the Syro-Malabar Catholic church is noted for its imposing interior. The main attraction is an underground shrine, considered a masterpiece of architectural design. Fr John Maliekkal is said to have planned and constructed this church. The exterior of the church features an Indo-European facade with white spires. The centenary of this church was celebrated during the historic visit of Pope John Paul II to Thrissur City in 1986. The cathedral church attracts thousands of pilgrims every month.

Cyril Vasiľ S.J. is a Slovak Jesuit who has been eparch (bishop) of the Eparchy of Košice in the Slovak Greek Catholic Church since June 2021, after serving as apostolic administrator there for 16 months. He continues to enjoy the personal title of archbishop. He held leadership positions at the Pontifical Oriental Institute from 2002 to 2008. He was made a titular archbishop in 2009 and held that title while serving as secretary of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches from 2009 to 2020 and while apostolic administrator of Košice.

Bosco Puthur is a Syro-Malabar Catholic bishop. He was born in Parappur, Kerala, India and served as the Curia Bishop of the Syro Malabar Church. Previously, he has served as Rector of St. Joseph's Pontifical Seminary, Mangalapuzha. He was also a Monsignor of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Archdiocese of Thrissur. Following the sudden death of Mar Varkey Vithayathil, he has also served as the Administrator of the Major Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly and of the Syro-Malabar Church. On 11 January 2014, Puthur was appointed by Pope Francis as the bishop of the Eparchy of Melbourne of St. Thomas in Australia for Syro-Malabar Catholics. He was also appointed as the Apostolic Visitator of the Syro-Malabar faithful in New Zealand.

The Ernakulam priests' revolt is a series of actions by the priests of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Major Archeparchy of Ernakulam–Angamaly, starting roughly from December 2017 and ending in September 2019. The issue first came out as a land scam in December 2017 through social media. Priests from the Major Archdiocese gathered together in the archbishop's house and asked for the details of the land deals of the archeparchy. The synod of bishops of the Syro-Malabar Church assembled in January 2018 could not effectively deal with the situation. The priests of the diocese insisted on the deposition of Alencherry from his office of major archbishop.
Mar Sebastian Vaniyapurackal is an Indian-born bishop of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church who has served as the Curia Bishop for the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church since his installation in 2017.
