Angus MacDonald is a British Liberal Democrat politician who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Inverness,Skye and West Ross-shire since 2024.
Angus Francis MacDonald was born on the 7th of November,1962 in London. Son of Donald ‘Rory’MacDonald,descendant of distiller 'Long John' MacDonald,and Nancy MacDonald (nee Hill,of Philadelphia). The second of five children,he was brought up in the Clachaig Inn,Glencoe,and two independent schools;Ampleforth College and Edinburgh Academy. He did not attend university.[ citation needed ]
MacDonald began his career running a number of publishing businesses in the financial services sector,including Edinburgh Financial Publishing,Financial News and eFinancialCareers,the latter two of which he sold in 2007 to a consortium including Dow Jones for £79 million. [1] MacDonald later expanded his business interests to encompass renewable energy and waste management, [2] [3] as well as founding various social enterprises and non-profit endeavours,most notably the Highland Cinema,an independent cinema in Fort William which was voted "Cinema of the year under 24 screens" in 2023. In 2014,MacDonald was awarded an OBE for services to the Highlands. [6]
MacDonald was elected as a councillor to Highland Council,representing Fort William and Ardnamurchan in the 2022 Highland Council election,with 37.5% of the vote. [7] [8]
Inverness,Skye and West Ross-shire - MacDonald's seat - was the final constituency to declare its results in the 2024 general election,due to a 'discrepancy' delaying the result until 6 July. [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] [14]
He had previously been a Conservative Party donor,giving £40,000 to the party. [12] [15]

The 2017 Highland Council election was held on 4 May 2017 to elect members of the Highland Council. The election used the 21 wards created under the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004;each ward elected three or four councillors using the single transferable vote system. A total of 74 councillors were elected,six less than in 2012.
Elections to The Highland Council were held on 5 May 2022,the same day as the 31 other Scottish local government elections. As with other Scottish council elections,it was held using single transferable vote (STV) –a form of proportional representation –in which multiple candidates are elected in each ward and voters rank candidates in order of preference.
The 2024 general election was held on 4 July 2024. 57 Scottish Westminster seats were contested. The election saw a resurgence of Labour within Scotland,with the party winning 37 seats,an increase of 36 from the previous election. The Liberal Democrats also saw gains,increasing their Scottish representation in Parliament from two seats to six. The Scottish National Party,the dominant party in Scotland since 2007,saw a collapse of support in which they lost 39 seats,bringing their total from 48 seats won at the previous election to nine. The Conservative Party lost a seat,taking their total down to five. Turnout dropped to 59%,eclipsed for the first time by a preceding Scottish Parliament election (63.5%). This was a reduction in turnout of 8.4% from 2019 and in a few constituencies the turnout was down 10%.
