The men's 400 metres at the 2004 Summer Olympics as part of the athletics program were held at the Athens Olympic Stadium from August 20 to 23. Sixty-two athletes from 48 nations competed. The event was won by Jeremy Wariner of the United States, the sixth in what would ultimately be 7 consecutive American victories stretching from 1984 to 2008 and the 18th overall title in the event by the United States. The United States swept the podium for the 4th time in the event.

Comoros took part in the 2008 Summer Olympics, held in Beijing, China from 8 to 24 August 2008. It was Comoros's fourth appearance in the summer Olympics since its debut in 1996. Adhemar Ferreira da Silva was a Brazilian triple jumper. He won two Olympic gold medals and set four world records, the last being 16.56 metres in 1955 Pan American Games. In his early career he also competed in the long jump, placing fourth at the 1951 Pan American Games. He broke world records in triple jump on five occasions during his illustrious career. To date, he remains the only track and field athlete from South America to have won two Olympic gold medals.

Middle-distance runner Haley Nemra was honored as the national flag bearer at the opening ceremony. The Marshall Islands continued their streak of bringing home no medals.
Youba Mohamed Ould H'meïde is a retired Mauritanian sprinter, who specialized in the 400 metres. He represented Mauritania at the 2004 Summer Olympics, and also set a national record and a personal best of 47.87 on his sporting debut from the 2001 IAAF World Championships in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
The steeplechase at the Summer Olympics has been held over several distances and is the longest track event with obstacles held at the multi-sport event. The men's 3000 metres steeplechase has been present on the Olympic athletics programme since 1920. The women's event is the most recent addition to the programme, having been added at the 2008 Olympics. It is the most prestigious steeplechase track race at elite level.
Róbert Štefko is a retired Slovak long-distance runner. He finished fourth in the 1994 European Athletics Championships – Men's 10,000 metres in a time of 28:08.02, less than 2 seconds behind the winner Abel Antón of Spain. He competed in the men's marathon at the 2000 Summer Olympics representing Slovakia and the same event at the 2004 Summer Olympics representing the Czech Republic. In April 2004, he became a Czech citizen.
