Aphyocypris pulchrilineata is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish belonging to the family Xenocyprididae, the East Asian minnows or sharpbellies. [2] This speces was originally described from a stream of the Chengjiang River at Chengjiang in Du'an County in Guangxi China. The Chengjiang River is a small northern branch of the Hongshuihe River, a tributary of the Xijiang in the Pearl River system. It has since been found in the Zuojiang and Youjiang rivers, also in Guangxi. [1]

It is found in the Hongshuihe River, part of the Xijiang River basin in China, with the type locality in Du'an County, Guangxi. The specific name pulcherrimus means most beautiful and is a reference to the "unique" banded color pattern ofthin vertical stripes crossing a wide lateral band, when compared to related species.

This species is endemic to Taiwan. It was formerly considered to be the only species in the genus Pararasbora. The Endemic Species Research Institute under the Council of Agriculture of the Executive Yuan in Taiwan has enlisted Aphyocypris moltrechti as "precious and rare species" among other endemic freshwater species.

This species is endemic to China. It was first collected from Hong Kong by A.W. Herre in 1936. The introduction of mosquitofish and habitat destruction caused the extirpation of this species from Hong Kong and the species was considered to be extinct in the wild. However, a similar species Aphyocypris pulchrilineata was discovered in Guangxi in southern China, but this species lacks the dark spot on the base of the caudal fin.

The specific name of this species honours the French zoologist Louis Roule who was the chair of the ichthyology and herpetology departments, Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris, where Wu conducted his studies.

It may also be present in China and Viet Nam, also the record sof this species from the easyetn part of its range is uncertain and reports may be misidentifications.

It was first formally described as Oreonectes barbatus in 2013 by Gan Xi, with its type locality given as "cave" in Lihu Town on the Dagou River), Nandan County, Guangxi in China at 25.2°N, 107.7°E, from an elevation of 484 m (1,588 ft). This is a cave fish which is found in three localities in Guangxi and Guizhou.
