Aponomma is a former, now defunct, genus of ticks belonging to the family Ixodidae. [1] Aponomma remains a subgenus of Amblyomma, comprising former 'typical' Aponomma.
The genus was fragmented in 1972, with the proposal of three distinct groups. [2] In 1999, nuclear rDNA analysis demonstrated that the genus was polyphyletic, and following this finding, the genus was redistributed. Today, the former member species constitute wholly or partially the Amblyomma, Archaeocroton , Bothriocroton, Haemaphysalis and Robertsicus genera. [3] [4] [1]
