The Apostolic Vicariate of Taytay is a Latin Catholic pre-diocesan missionary jurisdiction in the island of Palawan in the Philippines.

It is not a part of any ecclesiastical province as it is directly subject to the Holy See (under the jurisdiction of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples), yet for the purpose of apostolic cooperation usually grouped with the Archdiocese of Manila, along with the Roman Catholic Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Princesa.

Its episcopal see is the Cathedral of Saint Joseph the Worker, in Taytay, Palawan.

History

It was established on 27 March 2002 [1] as the Apostolic Vicariate of Taytay when it split off from the Apostolic Vicariate of Palawan. The latter then became the Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Princesa .

It is essentially provisional, though it may last for a century or more. The hope is that the region will generate sufficient numbers of Catholics for the Church to create a diocese. In turn, the status of apostolic vicariate is often a promotion for a former apostolic prefecture, while either may have started out as a mission sui iuris.

Apostolic prefecture

An apostolic prefect or prefect apostolic is a priest who heads what is known as an apostolic prefecture, a 'pre-diocesan' missionary jurisdiction where the Catholic Church is not yet sufficiently developed to have it made a diocese. Although it usually has an (embryonal) see, it is often not called after such city but rather after a natural or administrative geographical area.

Seminario de San Jose is the diocesan seminary of the Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Princesa in the province of Palawan. The idea of putting a minor and college seminary was started by a Recollect friar, Leandro Nieto, the then Prefect Apostolic in 1937. He realized the difficulties of sending seminarians from the then Apostolic Prefecture of Palawan due to its distance from Metro Manila and other ecclesiastical jurisdictions such as Cebu City, Iloilo City or Lipa City. The main thrust of the seminary is, of course, to train future secular priests for a jurisdiction so large like Palawan.

The Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Princesa is located in the Province of Palawan, Philippines. According to the Code of Canon Law 371 §1, "An apostolic vicariate or apostolic prefecture is a certain portion of the people of God which has not yet been established as a diocese due to special circumstances and which, to be shepherded, is entrusted to an apostolic vicar or apostolic prefect who governs it in the name of the Supreme Pontiff."

Broderick Pabillo Filipino bishop (born 1955)

Broderick Soncuaco Pabillo is a Filipino prelate who has been the Vicar Apostolic of Taytay in Palawan since 2021. He was appointed by Pope Francis to that post on 29 June 2021 and was installed on 19 August by Socrates C. Mesiona, Vicar Apostolic of Puerto Princesa, Palawan. He previously served as auxiliary bishop of Manila from 2006 to 2021 and apostolic administrator of that archdiocese from February 2020 to June 2021.

Puerto Princesa Cathedral Church in Palawan, Philippines

The Puerto Princesa Cathedral, also known as the Immaculate Conception Cathedral Parish, is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the city of Puerto Princesa, Palawan in western Philippines. It is in the Neo-Gothic architectural tradition and is the mother church of the Apostolic Vicariate of Puerto Princesa which covers the municipalities of Palawan west of Puerto Princesa City. It is located at the border of Barangay Matiyaga Poblacion and Liwanag Poblacion, near the Port of Puerto Princesa. At 118° east longitude, it is the westernmost cathedral in the country.
