As was common in early Olympic archery, the events held in 1904 had little resemblance to the previous edition's events. The events were formally named the 26th Grand Annual Target Meeting of the National Archery Association. While open to international entrants, no foreign competitors entered. Team archery was introduced at these Games, as was women's archery. The medalists were the same for both men's individual events and both women's individual events. Howell, an early pioneer of women's archery, finished with three gold medals as she was a member of the only women's team to appear in the records.

All archery was done at a range of 70 metres. 64 archers competed in each the men's individual and women's individual competitions. They began with a 72-arrow ranking round. This was followed by three elimination rounds, in which archers competed head-to-head in 18-arrow matches. After these rounds, there were 8 archers left. The quarterfinals, semifinals, and medal matches were 12-arrow matches. In all matches, losers were eliminated and received a final rank determined by their score in that round, with the exception of the semifinals. The losers of the semifinals competed in the bronze medal match.
Alison Jane Williamson MBE is a retired British archer who represented Great Britain at six consecutive Olympic Games from 1992 to 2012. She won a bronze medal in the women's individual event at the 2004 Summer Olympics, becoming the first British woman to win an Olympic archery medal in ninety-six years. Williamson achieved two medals at the World Archery Championships and represented England at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, winning two silver medals.
