Ari Michael Taub (born January 19, 1971) is a Canadian Olympic Greco-Roman wrestler. [2] He won two gold medals at the 1989 Maccabiah Games in Israel, and a gold medal at the 2007 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship. He competed for Canada in the 2008 Summer Olympics.
Taub was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, later lived in Vancouver, and is Jewish. [3] [4] [5] He grew up in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and went to Henry Wise Wood High School. [5] His height is 191 cm (6 ft 3 in), and he weighs 122 kg (269 lb). [6] He attended York University and Simon Fraser University (BBA, Finance '94) and UBC Law School ('96), and is an attorney. [7] [8] [9] [5] After law school he articled for a year at Ladner Downs in Vancouver. [5]
He is married to the former Sarah Howell, and his four children are two sets of identical twins, the elder two being girls and the younger two being boys. [5] [8] The two boys, Conaire and Nick Taub, are volleyball players and were flag bearers as well as competitors for the Team Canada under-18 men's team at the 2022 Maccabiah Games; they also competed at the 2017 Maccabiah Games. [10] He resides in Calgary, where he runs his own law firm, specializing in corporate and real-estate law, Taub Law. [8] [5] [11]
At the World Wrestling Championships, he came in 5th in Freestyle Cadets at 95 kg in 1987, and 5th in Freestyle Espoir in 1991.
At the 1989 Maccabiah Games in Israel, he won two gold medals. [12] In the Pan American Wrestling Championships, he won a silver medal in 1992, and bronze medals in 2006 and 2007. [13]
He quit wrestling in 1992, when he was 22 years old, for 10 years, after a diagnosis of osteophytes (bone spurs) and a spinal column injury involving a narrowing of the spinal canal, which could turn him into a quadriplegic if he continued wrestling. [11] [6] [5] But he returned a decade later upon learning that it had been a misdiagnosis. [6] In 2000, he had chronic fatigue syndrome. [5] [11]
In 2004 he won the Canadian Greco-Roman championship. [11] He won a bronze medal at the 2007 Pan American Games, [6] and a gold medal at the 2007 Commonwealth Wrestling Championship.
Taub qualified for and then competed in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, in the 120 kg weight class, at 37 years of age. [5] [9] [14] In the 1/8 finals, he was defeated by Mihály Deák-Bárdos of Hungary, and finished 16th. [6] He was Canada's first Olympic Greco-Roman wrestler since 1996. [15]
Taub and a partner created Calgary's only amateur MMA fight TV and live event series, Hard Knocks Fighting Championship, in March 2009. [5] He is the founder and CEO of Hard Knocks Fighting network.
Karam Ibrahim Gaber is an Egyptian Greco-Roman wrestler. He won the gold medal in the Men's Greco-Roman 96 kg at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Gaber won the silver medal at the 2003 World Championships. At the 2012 London Olympics, he won his second Olympic medal, winning a silver.
Eight hundred ninety athletes representing 23 countries competed in the 1953 4th Maccabiah Games, held September 20 to 29, in 18 branches of sports.
The 7th Maccabiah Games in 1965 saw 1,500 athletes from 29 different countries compete in 21 sports. It was the first Maccabiah Games for Iran, Jamaica, Peru, and Venezuela. The United States delegation won the most gold medals, followed by Israel, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Mexico and the Netherlands, Southern Rhodesia, Australia, Argentina and Italy, and Brazil, Canada, Denmark, and Sweden with one each.
The 14th Maccabiah Games brought 5,100 athletes to Israel from 48 nations.
The 18th Maccabiah Games, were held in July 2009. According to the organizing committee these were the largest games held yet. These Games were the world's fifth-largest sporting event, behind the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, World Police and Fire Games, and Universiade. On the 13 July, more than 6,000 Jewish athletes from all over the world joined Team Israel's 3,000 participants at the Ramat Gan Stadium in Tel Aviv District, Israel, for the opening ceremony. American swimmer Jason Lezak was given the honor of lighting the Maccabiah torch at the Opening Ceremony.
Ghasem Rezaei is an Iranian former Greco-Roman wrestler. He was an Olympic gold and bronze medalist and two-time Asian Champion. His nickname is Tiger of Amol.
Andrew Mark Borodow is retired male wrestler from Canada. An Olympian, he won both the Maccabiah Games championship and the Commonwealth Games championship, and a silver medal in the Pan American Games. He was inducted into the Canada Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Rıza Kayaalp is a five-time world champion and twelve-time European level champion Turkish wrestler competing in the 130 kg division of Greco-Roman wrestling. He won silver at the 2016 Summer Olympics and won bronze medals at the 2012 and 2020 Summer Olympics. Lindsey Durlacher was an American Greco-Roman wrestler, mixed martial arts fighter, and judo athlete whose career highlight was a bronze medal at the 2006 FILA Wrestling World Championships at 55 kg. He was among the most accomplished collegiate wrestlers in Illinois history.
Nickolaus "Mickey" Hirschl was an Austrian Olympic-medal-winning wrestler. He was also a European heavyweight wrestling champion, and for 10 years he held the title of Austrian heavyweight wrestling champion. He was also an Austrian shot put and discus junior champion, Austrian heavyweight weightlifting junior champion, and for seven years the Austrian pentathlon champion.
Bilyal Valerievich Makhov is a Russian freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestler. He was the Russian champion in 2007 and 2010, European champion in 2010 and World champion in 2007, 2009 and 2010 in Men's Freestyle 120 kg wrestling and bronze medalist in 130 kg Greco-Roman Wrestling at the World Championships in 2014 and 2015. In 2015, he won the Russian National Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships.
Abraham Kurland was a Danish Olympic silver medalist wrestler. Kurland won 12 Denmark championships from 1932-49, won a silver medal in lightweight Greco Roman wrestling at the 1932 Olympics and a gold medal in lightweight at the 1932 Maccabiah Games in Mandatory Palestine, won a gold medal at the 1934 European Wrestling Championships in Greco-Roman and a bronze medal in freestyle, and won a silver medal at the 1935 European Wrestling Championships.
Allen Perry Rosenberg was an American rowing coxswain and coach. As a coxswain he won a gold and a silver medal at the 1955 Pan American Games and a silver at the 1958 European Championships. As a coach he was responsible for more than 24 gold and silver medals at the Olympics and world championships.
David Zilberman is a Canadian Olympic freestyle wrestler. He is a two-time Canadian champion. In 2003, he won a bronze medal at the Pan American Championships, wrestling at 84 kg. In 2004, he won a silver medal at the FISU World University Championships, at 84 kg. In 2005, he won the Canada Cup gold medal, and the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships silver medal. He took 5th in the 2006 World Championships, and won a silver medal at the 2006 FISU World University Championships. He won a gold medal at the 2007 Senior Canadian National Championships.
Mihály Deák-Bárdos is a Hungarian amateur Greco-Roman wrestler, who played for the men's super heavyweight category. He is a four-time Olympian, and a six-time medalist at the European Championships. Deák-Bárdos had also won a total of five silver medals at the World Championships, losing out to numerous top-level wrestlers including Alexander Karelin, Rulon Gardner, Khasan Baroyev, and Mijaín López, all of whom were Olympic champions in the same division.
Hard Knocks Fighting is a mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion in North America. Hard Knocks Fighting was founded in 2009 by Canadian Olympic wrestler Ari Taub. Hard Knocks Fighting is known for its local fighter support and ongoing charity efforts and where Ronda Rousey secured her second career MMA victory.

After graduating from McGill University, he worked at the International Olympic Committee, including 35 years as the Director of Legal Affairs.
