Armikrog (stylized as Armikrog.) is a stop-motion point-and-click adventure comedy game by Doug TenNapel in partnership with Pencil Test Studios and Versus Evil for Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, PlayStation 4, Wii U and Xbox One. It is a spiritual successor to The Neverhood , and is developed by many members of the same team. Like The Neverhood, Armikrog uses clay animation.
The game plays in a traditional point-and-click with a cursor to interact with objects and navigate around. The player controls two characters: space explorer Tommynaut and his sidekick Beak-Beak. Much like Klaymen in The Neverhood, Tommynaut has the ability to store items in his body. The player primarily controls him to do most of the grunt work like pulling levers, driving the Zipkicker and solving most of the puzzles. Beak-Beak has the ability to fly in certain areas and enter tight space that only he has access to. He can also digest small objects and pass them to Tommynaut by regurgitating them out.
On the planet of Ixen, the populace is in the midst of extinction without the power of P-tonium to sustain them. They send brother astronauts Vognaut, Numnaut and Tommynaut to a planet called Spiro 5 in hopes to find these crystals. Unfortunately, two of the brothers are dead due to unknown causes, leaving Tommynaut and his best friend Beak-Beak to continue onward.
After crash-landing on the planet, they end up locked inside a fortress called Armikrog. They find a baby girl named P and Tommynaut decides to care for her in hopes to find her parents. Upon further investigation, Tommynaut discovers that Armikrog was previously attacked by an unknown assailant who wished to possess the P-tonium crystals, which were assumed to be imbedded in Father and Mother, the guardians of Armikrog and also P's parents. The assailant killed both parents before learning that the crystals were transferred to P instead. Father and Mother's spirits live on in Armikrog as a result. Tommynaut later discovers that the assailant is Vognaut, who is somehow alive and has grown larger due to an unknown mutation. The evil brother kidnaps P and straps her into a device in hopes to extract the P-tonium for his own gain. Beak-Beak is later killed in an attempt to rescue the baby. Enraged, Tommynaut fights his brother and manages to escape with P.
After reuniting all 5 P-tonium crystals from P, the spirit of Mother thanks Tommynaut for saving her daughter. She then gives her blessings to use the crystals to power his home planet, which is more than enough to last for an eternity. Mother then transforms the Armikrog fortress into a giant robot that Tommynaut can use to navigate back to Ixen. Vognaut tries to kidnap P again before he is ejected out of the fortress and is crushed by its gigantic leg. The now transformed Armikrog ascends into space.
Tommynaut is then reunited with Beak-Beak, who is now a ghost. Suddenly, a distress signal is being heard from Numnaut, who too is alive. Tommynaut, along with Beak-Beak and P, set their next course to Darshon's Orb.
Mike Dietz and Ed Schofield, founders of Pencil Test Studios, teamed up with Doug TenNapel, with whom they worked on Earthworm Jim and The Neverhood , to use Kickstarter to crowdfund Armikrog. [2] The Kickstarter's goal of $900,000, and stretch goal of $950,000 for a Wii U version were exceeded when the funding ended on June 27, 2013. [3]
The game has a voice cast featuring Michael J. Nelson as Tommynaut, Rob Paulsen as Beak-Beak and the PresidANTs, Jon Heder as evil Vognaut, Veronica Belmont as Mother, Bob Baffy as Father, Charlotte Schofield as P, Yumi Iwama, Jeff Minnerly, Bob Doll as the Octovators, and Eddie Fantastic as Numnaut. The game's soundtrack was composed by Terry Scott Taylor, who composed the music for The Neverhood soundtrack. [5]

Armikrog received "mixed or average" reviews, according to review aggregator Metacritic. [6] [7] [8] [9] Critics appreciated the fun art style and catchy music. As a fan of The Neverhood, Destructoid's Caitlin Cooke praised the game saying that it has a certain charm that only Doug TenNapel can deliver. She did however criticise the lack of an inventory system and outdated interface. [15] GameSpot's Matt Espineli gave a 4/10 rating, with criticism stemmed from underdeveloped characters, inconsistent sound design and confusing puzzle elements. [16]
In 2017, TenNapel admitted that the developers ran out of resources to put the final polish in Armikrog. [17]
The Neverhood is a 1996 point-and-click adventure video game developed by The Neverhood, Inc. and published by DreamWorks Interactive for Microsoft Windows. The game follows the adventure of a claymation character named Klaymen as he discovers his origins and his purpose in a world made entirely out of clay. When the game was originally released, it was unique in that all of its animation was done entirely in claymation, including all of the sets. The gameplay consists mostly of guiding the main character Klaymen around and solving puzzles to advance. Video sequences help advance the plot. In addition to being unique, The Neverhood aimed at being quirky and humorous, as is evident by the characters, the music, and the plot sequence. The game has garnered a cult following. It received a sequel in 1998, Skullmonkeys, which was a platform game, abandoning the adventure format of the original.
Douglas Richard TenNapel is an American animator, writer, cartoonist, video game designer, and comic book artist whose work has encompassed animated television, video games, and comic books. He is best known for creating Earthworm Jim, a character that spawned a video game series, animated series, and a toy line. He is also the creator of the animated television series Catscratch (2005–2007), which aired on Nickelodeon, and was itself a loose adaptation of TenNapel's comic book limited series Gear.

Earthworm Jim is a series of platform games featuring an earthworm named Jim who wears a robotic suit and battles the forces of evil. The series is noted for its platforming and shooting gameplay, surreal humor, and edgy art style. Four games were released in the series: Earthworm Jim, Earthworm Jim 2, Earthworm Jim 3D, and Earthworm Jim: Menace 2 the Galaxy, with the first game released in 1994. The series had lain dormant for almost a decade before Gameloft remade the original game in HD for PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade in 2010. Interplay announced Earthworm Jim 4 in 2008; little to no information surfaced until May 2019 and August 2020, and development was believed cancelled by the rights owners by 2023, as it had never left pre-planning stages.
Earthworm Jim 4 is a proposed video game in the Earthworm Jim series. It was originally announced by Interplay Entertainment in 2008, and referred to by Interplay as "still in development" in May 2011. Later commentary over the next decade from individual developers would contest its development status, until May 2019, when it was announced that the game was being developed for the Intellivision Amico console. Lack of updates in the years following has again lead to the belief that the game is on hold or cancelled.
Earthworm Jim HD is a high definition remake of the original Earthworm Jim video game. While the original was released in 1994 for the Sega Genesis and then ported to many other platforms, the remake was released digitally through XBLA on Xbox 360 on June 9, 2010, through the PSN on the PlayStation 3 on August 3, 2010, and for Windows Phone 7 alongside its launch in October and November of 2010. While critics had mixed feelings with regard to how well the game had aged, they generally praised the new content, mainly the cooperative multiplayer mode.
The Wonderful 101 is a 2013 action-adventure game developed by PlatinumGames and published by Nintendo for the Wii U. The game was directed by Hideki Kamiya and produced by Atsushi Inaba. It was released in August 2013 in all major regions except North America, where it released the following month. The game was developed using Unreal Engine 3 and funded through a Kickstarter campaign, which nearly doubled its fundraising goals within its first two days. The game was self-published for macOS and Windows in October 2017, and by Humble Bundle for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles two months later. It is a spiritual successor to the Syndicate series, which co-founder and programmer Mike Diskett had worked on. The name of the game is derived from one of the weapons featured in Syndicate Wars called "Satellite Rain". It received positive reviews from critics.
Obduction is an adventure video game developed by Cyan Worlds. Obduction is considered a spiritual successor to Cyan's previous adventure games, Myst and Riven. In the game, the player finds their character transported to strange alien worlds but with human elements within the settings. The player must explore and solve puzzles to figure out how to return home.

Dropsy is a 2015 point-and-click adventure game developed by US-based indie developer Tendershoot and indie development studio A Jolly Corpse, and published by Devolver Digital. The game was released on September 10, 2015 for Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux. The iOS port of Dropsy was released on December 17, 2015. The Nintendo Switch version was released on September 29, 2022.
Freedom Planet is a 2014 platform game developed and published by American video game designer Sabrina DiDuro, for her studio GalaxyTrail. The player controls one of three anthropomorphic animal protagonists: the dragon girl Lilac, the wildcat Carol, or the basset hound Milla. Aided by a duck-like alien named Torque, the girls attempt to defeat the evil Lord Brevon, who plans to steal the Kingdom Stone and conquer the galaxy. While the game focuses on fast-paced platforming, its levels are interspersed with slower action scenes.
BoomBots is a fighting game released in 1999 for PlayStation. It was created by Doug TenNapel, developed by The Neverhood, Inc., and published by SouthPeak Interactive. BoomBots features distinctive claymation visuals and various amounts of toilet humor. The game was both a critical and commercial failure. It was the third and final game made by the Neverhood, Inc. before the company folded in 1999 after the game's release.
Yooka-Laylee is a 2017 platform game developed by Playtonic Games and published by Team17. It was released for Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in April 2017, Nintendo Switch in December 2017 and Amazon Luna in October 2020. Developed by a group of former key personnel from Rare, Yooka-Laylee is a spiritual successor to the Banjo-Kazooie series. After years of planning to develop a new game, Playtonic Games initiated a Kickstarter campaign that attracted significant media coverage and raised a record-breaking sum of over £2 million. The game follows chameleon Yooka and bat Laylee on their quest to retrieve a magical book from an evil corporation.

Road Redemption is a vehicular combat racing video game developed by EQ-Games and Pixel Dash Studios.
