Awzaan (foaled 8 February 2007) is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He showed his best form as a two-year-old in 2009 when he was unbeaten in four races including the Mill Reef Stakes and the Middle Park Stakes. He raced for two more seasons but never won again. In 2012 he was retired from racing to become a breeding stallion in Uruguay.

Background

Awzaan was a brown horse with no white markings [3] bred in England by his owner Hamdan Al Maktoums Shadwell Estate. He was sent into training with Mark Johnston at his stable at Middleham in North Yorkshire.

He was from the ninth crop of foals sired by the Cartier Champion Two-year-old Colt Alhaarth, whose other progeny have included Mourayan (Sydney Cup), Phoenix Reach and Haafhd. [4] Awzaan's dam Nufoos was a successful racemare in the Shadwell colours, winning three races including the 2005 edition of the Listed Eternal Stakes at Warwick Racecourse. [5] Apart from Awzaan she also produced the Sandringham Handicap winner Muteela. She was descended from the British broodmare Pelting (foaled 1958) who was the female-line ancestor of several other major winners including Moon Ballad, Bassenthwaite, Telescope, Braashee (Prix Royal-Oak) and Central Park (Derby Italiano, runner-up in the Melbourne Cup). Racing career

2009: two-year-old season

Awzaan made his racecourse debut in a six furlong maiden race at Hamilton Racecourse on 17 June and started at odds of 11/4 in a six -runner field. Ridden by Greg Fairley he took the lead soon after the start and kept on well to win by a length from the favourite Paradise Spectre. [7] Richard Hills then took over the ride and partnered Awzaan in all but two of his subsequent races. At Newmarket Racecourse on 9 July the colt started at odds of 9/1 in a field of ten runners for a minor race over six furlongs. After being restrained by Hills in the early stages he took the lead a furlong out and drew away in the closing stages to win by five lengths from the Clive Brittain-trained Amary. [8]

After a break of over two months Awzaan was stepped up in class to contest the Group Two Mill Reef Stakes over six furlongs at Newbury Racecourse on 19 September. He was made the 11/4 second favourite behind Radiohead, a colt who had won the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot before finishing third against older sprinters in the Nunthorpe Stakes. The best of the other five runners appeared to be Stargaze (third in the Richmond Stakes) and the undefeated Quarrel. Awzaan raced at the rear of the field as Quarrel set the pace, before making progress approaching the last quarter mile. He went to the front a furlong out and won by one and a quarter lengths from the Richard Hannon, Sr-trained Angel's Pursuit despite hanging to the left in the closing stages. [9] After the race Richard Hills said "He really is a lovely horse to ride and has a lovely turn of foot... He's quite a mature horse". [10] Hamdan Al Maktoum's racing manages Angus Gold said "Sheikh Hamdan wanted him to have a break after Newmarket and the only worry was how much weight he had put on. But we're thrilled with that and I should think he'll go for the Middle Park now." [11]

On 2 October Awzaan, as Gold had predicted, was moved up to Group One level for the Middle Park Stakes over six furlongs on good to firm ground. The Godolphin colt Poet's Voice (winner of the Champagne Stakes) started favourite ahead of the John Gosden-trained Showcasing (Gimcrack Stakes) with Awzaan third in the betting on 4/1. The only other runners were Radiohead and the unbeaten Irish challenger Arctic (Round Tower Stakes). Hills settled the colt in a close fourth place as Poet's Voice set the pace from Showcasing and Arctic. Awzaan took the lead approaching the final furlong despite again hanging left and held off the fast-finishing Radiohead by three-quarters of a length with Showcasing a neck away in third. [12] Hills, who received a one-day ban for "careless riding" from the racecourse stewards commented "He tended to go slightly left at the end, but it didn't really matter. His ears were pricked and he was enjoying himself". [13] Bookmakers responded to the race by cutting Awzaan's odds for the following year's 2000 Guineas to as low as 8/1. [14]

2010: three-year-old season

Awzaan made his first appearance of 2010 in the classic 2000 Guineas over the Rowley Mile at Newmarket on 1 May and started 8/1 third favourite in a nineteen-runner field. After racing in mid-division he began to struggle three furlongs out and faded to finish in fifteenth place behind Makfi. Mark Johnston was at a loss to explain the colt's performance, saying "I haven't got a clue why he ran so poorly. It is too bad to be true." [15]

After a five-month break, Awzaan returned in the Listed Superior Mile at Haydock Park on 4 September and finished third of the eight runners behind the four-year-old Cityscape. Two weeks later he was again matched against older opposition in the Dubai Duty Free Cup over seven furlongs at Newbury and produced his best effort of the season. After racing towards the rear of the fourteen-runner field in the early running he stayed on well in second half of the race and finished third, beaten a neck and a short head by Delegator and Sir Gerry. [16] On his final appearance of the year in the Joel Stakes in October he appeared to be travelling well until the final quarter mile but then dropped away abruptly and finished tailed off last of the nine runners behind Cityscape.

2011: four-year-old season

Awzaan remained in training as a four-year-old but failed to recover his best form. He finished third in a minor weight-for-age race over seven furlongs at York Racecourse on 21 May and then ran sixth in the Diomed Stakes at Epsom two weeks later. Later in June he finished fifth to Libranno in Criterion Stakes at Newmarket. On his final appearance he was dropped back in class for the Listed City Plate at Chester on 9 July and finished ninth of the eleven runners behind Majestic Myles. [17]

Assessment

In the 2009 European Thoroughbred Rankings, Awzaan was given a rating of 117, making him the eighth-best juvenile of the year, seven pounds behind the top-rated St Nicholas Abbey. [18]

Stud record

In January 2012 it was announced that Awzaan had been retired from racing and would begin his career as a breeding stallion at the Haras Cuatro Piedras in Progreso, Uruguay [19] where he was later joined by Invasor. [2]

The following spring, Harayir became the first horse to win a Classic on a Sunday, when she was victorious in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket Racecourse after being rejected by her regular jockey Willie Carson in favour of her owner's other runner Aqaarid. Her success gave her trainer Dick Hern his fourteenth and final classic winner. Later in the year, Harayir competed successfully against colts and older horses, winning the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury, the Celebration Mile at Goodwood and the Challenge Stakes at Newmarket. She was retired from racing to become a broodmare.

Shadayid was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from June 1990 to November 1991 she ran eleven times winning five races and being placed five times. Shadayid was one of the leading two-year-old fillies in Europe in 1990, winning all three of her races including the Group One Prix Marcel Boussac at the Longchamp. After winning the Fred Darling Stakes on her three-year-old debut, Shadayid took her unbeaten run to five by winning the Classic 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. Although she never won again, she finished second in the Coronation Stakes and the Sussex Stakes and third in the Haydock Sprint Cup and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Shadayid was retired from racing to become a broodmare at the end of her three-year-old season after finishing seventh in the Breeders' Cup Mile.

Al Bahathri American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Al Bahathri was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she was one of the best of her generation in Europe, winning three of her five races including the Princess Margaret Stakes and the Lowther Stakes. In the following year she was narrowly beaten in the 1000 Guineas before winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes and Child Stakes. After her retirement from racing she became a very successful and influential broodmare, whose descendants included Haafhd, Military Attack, Gladiatorus and Red Cadeaux. She died in 2014 at the age of thirty-two.

Muhaarar British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Muhaarar is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old he showed very good form, winning the Gimcrack Stakes and finishing third in both the July Stakes and the Middle Park Stakes. He began his three-year-old career with a win in the Greenham Stakes before emerging as a leading sprinter with victories in the Commonwealth Cup, July Cup, Prix Maurice de Gheest and British Champions Sprint Stakes.

Elnadim was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. After failing to win as a juvenile he developed into a high-class sprinter in 1997, winning four of his six races including the Hopeful Stakes and the Diadem Stakes. In the following year he recorded his biggest success when he won the Group One July Cup. His subsequent form was disappointing and he was retired from racing in 2000. He stood as a breeding stallion in the United States, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand and had some success as a sire of winners. He died in 2015 at the age of twenty-one.

Al Hareb was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was one of the best staying two-year-olds in Britain in 1988 when he won three of his four races including the Group One William Hill Futurity. He ran poorly on his only start in 1989 and was retired from racing. He had some success as a breeding stallion in Australia.

Beauchamp King was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. After finishing third on his racecourse debut he won his remaining four races as a two-year-old in 1995, including victories in the Autumn Stakes and the Racing Post Trophy to establish himself as one of the best staying juveniles of his generation in Britain. He upset Alhaarth in the Craven Stakes on his three-year-old debut and went on to finish fifth in the 2000 Guineas and third in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. He won one minor race in 1997 and the Spring Trophy in 1998 before being retired from racing at the end of the 1999 season. He made no impact as a sire of winners.

Cajun was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was a talented but temperamental horse who won three of his thirteen races between June 1981 and September 1982. As a two-year-old he won the Chesham Stakes on his second appearance and was placed in the Richmond Stakes and the Seaton Delaval Stakes before ending the year win a win in the Middle Park Stakes. He began his second season with a victory in the Greenham Stakes but was beaten in five subsequent races and was retired from racing at the end of the year. After his retirement he was exported to become a breeding stallion in Japan.

Dark Angel (horse) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Dark Angel is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He raced only as a two-year-old, winning four of his nine races including the St Leger Yearling Stakes, Mill Reef Stakes and Middle Park Stakes. He was retired to stud as a three-year-old and became a very successful breeding stallion.

Lujain was an American-bred, British-trained thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He showed his best form as a two-year-old in 1998 when he won his first three races by wide margins, culminating in a victory in the G1 Middle Park Stakes. He made no impact in three subsequent races and was retired to stud at the end of 1999. He had little success as a breeding stallion.

Minardi was an American-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was the top-rated European two-year-old in 2000 when he recovered from a defeat on his debut to win the Phoenix Stakes and the Middle Park Stakes. In the following year he finished fourth in the 2000 Guineas and third in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. He was retired to stud but had limited success as a breeding stallion.

Mujahid (horse) American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Mujahid is an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Bred and owned by Hamdan Al Maktoum he was trained throughout his racing career in England by John Dunlop. As a two-year-old in 1998 Mujahid won three of his four races and was rated the best of his generation in Europe after recording an upset win in the Dewhurst Stakes. He never won another race although he did finish third in the 2000 Guineas in 1999. After his retirement from racing he became a successful breeding stallion.

Hayil is an American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire best known for his upset win in the 1997 Middle Park Stakes. As a two-year-old in England, he showed promising form in his first five starts, winning once and placing three times. On his final race of the season he was equipped with blinkers for the first time and won the Middle Park Stakes at odds of 14/1. After the death of his trainer David Morley he was transferred to France but never recovered his juvenile form and failed to win in seven subsequent races. Hayil later stood as a breeding stallion in Australia.

Balmont is an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He had his greatest success as a two-year-old in 2003 when he won the Gimcrack Stakes and was awarded the win in the Middle Park Stakes on the disqualification of Three Valleys. He remained in training until the age of five but never won again although he ran well in several major sprint races, being placed in the July Cup, Golden Jubilee Stakes, Temple Stakes and Phoenix Sprint Stakes. After the end of his racing career he stood as a breeding stallion in Ireland and Australia, and now stands at the Jug Handle Ranch in Alberta Canada.

Mehthaaf was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed great promise as a two-year-old in 1993, winning on her second racecourse appearance and going on to finish third in both the Lowther Stakes and the Prix Marcel Boussac. As a three-year-old she won the Nell Gwyn Stakes and ran fourth when favourite for the 1000 Guineas before winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Later in the season she produced arguably her best performance with an emphatic victory over male opponents in the Celebration Mile. She also ran third in the Coronation Stakes and Prix Jacques Le Marois as well as finishing fourth in the Champion Stakes. After her retirement from racing she had considerable success as a broodmare.

Ta Rib was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Despite failing to win as a juvenile in 1995 she showed promise as he was placed in both her races. In the following spring she won a maiden race and then recorded her biggest success when recording an upset victory in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches. She failed to win again but ran well in defeat in three subsequent races. As a broodmare she produced several minor winners but no top-class performers.

Eqtidaar Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Eqtidaar, is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. He showed promise as two-year-old when he won a maiden race on his debut and then finished fourth in the Sirenia Stakes. In the following year he was beaten in the Pavilion Stakes and the Carnarvon Stakes before recording his biggest win in the Commonwealth Cup. In two subsequent races that year he ran poorly in the July Cup and the Haydock Sprint Cup.

Mustashry is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. He finished fourth on his only run as a juvenile and won two minor races in the following year. As a four-year-old in 2017 he improved to win two races including the Group 3 Strensall Stakes. After being gelded he returned in 2018 to win the Gala Stakes, Park Stakes and Joel Stakes. In 2019 he won the Lockinge Stakes and the Challenge Stakes.
