Azerbaijan competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece from 13 to 29 August 2004. 36 competitors, 30 men and 6 women, took part in 36 events in 10 sports.
Azerbaijan sent a team to compete at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. In total 44 Azerbaijani athletes went to Beijing, including 14 women.
Azerbaijan competed at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, Greece. Two powerlifters failed drug tests for steroids in initial drug tests on 18 September 2004 and were banned for life from the Paralympics having both failed tests in previous championships. Sara Abbasova competed in the women's -82.5 kg category and had her first violation at the 2001 powerlifting championships in Hungary. Gunduz Ismayilov who had set a world record and won a gold medal in Men's -90 kg competition at the 2000 Summer Paralympics was stripped of it and had his record nullified after testing positive for nandrolone.
Weightlifting competitions at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London were held from 28 July to 7 August in the ExCeL venue. Fifteen gold medals were awarded and 260 athletes took part.

Sharif Naidhajavovich Sharifov is a Russian-Azerbaijani former wrestler of Avar descent. Sharifov finished first in the World Championships and won a bronze in the European Championships. At the 2012 Summer Olympics Sharifov won a gold medal in the 84 kg event after defeating Puerto Rican Jaime Espinal.

According to the classification rules of the International Federation for Powerlifting athletes which cannot participate in weightlifting events because of a physical impairment affecting their legs or hips are deemed eligible to compete in powerlifting events at the Paralympics.
Shooting at the 2012 Summer Paralympics consisted of twelve events. The competition was held in the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich from 30 August to 6 September.
The club throw is an athletic throwing event where the objective is to throw a wooden club. The event is one of the four throwing events, along with discus, javelin and shot put of the Summer Paralympics. It is the Paralympic equivalent of the hammer throw. The club throw was introduced for both men and women at the first 1960 Summer Paralympic Games. It was dropped from the women's programme from the 1992 Paralympics in Barcelona but was reinstated for London 2012.

Rovshan Safarov is an Azerbaijani Paralympic judoka. He represented Azerbaijan at the 2012 Summer Paralympics and at the 2016 Summer Paralympics and he won one of the bronze medals in the men's 81 kg event in 2016.
