No.72010 Hengist is a steam locomotive which is under construction as a "new-build" project. The design is based on the mixed traffic BR Standard 6 Clan Class, none of which were preserved. [1] The project is akin to the construction of the 60163 Tornado.

History

Background

The Clan class was a batch of 10 4-6-2 (pacific) locomotives built in the early 1950s. [3] Their purpose was to be a lightweight version of the power class 7 Britannia locomotives [3] that could operate over a wider variety of routes, albeit with slightly reduced power. The first batch was destined for Scotland, [3] hence the name "Clan". Following experience with the first batch, a second batch of 15 was planned with design improvements. The first of these was to be allocated to the Southern Region with the number 72010 and name Hengist. [ citation needed ] However, due to a shortage of steel in the 1950s, and a change in motive power policy the order was postponed and later cancelled. [4]

No members of the class survived into preservation. [3] 72006 Clan McKenzie was withdrawn in May 1966 and all were scrapped by August 1966.

Project

The Clan Project was initiated with the objective to create a new member of the class. [5] As a go-anywhere engine with a low maintenance design, especially when incorporating improvements destined for the batch, the design should be most suitable for use on heritage railways as well as hauling rail tours. The engine is being built to modern mainline standards.[ citation needed ]

The project was initially based at the Swanage Railway, but by 2017, the project was at the Great Central Railway where the completed cab and smokebox were displayed for a while, however logistics were to require a fourth move. [6]

The project is now based at the premises of CTL Seal in Sheffield. All of the components for the first phase of frame assembly are on site and assembly has commenced. Components for the bogie frame are either in stock or are being manufactured, bogie frame assembly commenced in early 2023.[ when? ] Meanwhile, the pattern for the outside cylinders is under construction.[ citation needed ]

Between 1951 and 1960, 999 BR Standard types were built across 12 locomotive classes [7] [3] and 72010, when completed, will be the 1000th.

An improved design [8] was worked out by British Railways and was to form the basis of the Crewe Works Order Lot 242 for the second batch of Clans. The main changes involve:

The design employed results from the 1948 locomotive exchanges undertaken in advance of further locomotive classes being constructed. The BR Standard steam locomotives were an effort to standardize locomotives from the motley collection of older pre-grouping locos. Construction started in 1951. Due to the controversial British Railways' modernisation plan of 1955, where steam traction was abandoned in favour of diesel and electric traction, many of the locomotives' working lives were very short: between 7 and 17 years. Many have been preserved, mainly due to being sent to Barry Scrapyard.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">BR Standard Class 3 2-6-2T</span>

The BR Standard Class 3 2-6-2T was a class of steam locomotive designed by Robert Riddles for British Railways. It was essentially a hybrid design, the chassis being closely based on and sharing a number of parts with the LMS Ivatt Class 4, and having a boiler derived from a GWR No.2 boiler as fitted to the GWR Large Prairie 2-6-2T and 5600 Class 0-6-2T tank engines.

The LSWR N15 class was a British 2–cylinder 4-6-0 express passenger steam locomotive designed by Robert Urie. The class has a complex build history spanning three sub-classes and ten years of construction from 1918 to 1927. The first batch of the class was constructed for the London and South Western Railway (LSWR), where they hauled heavy express passenger trains to the south coast ports and further west to Exeter. After the Lord Nelsons, they were the second biggest 4-6-0 passenger locomotives on the Southern Railway. They could reach speeds of up to 90 mph (145 km/h).

B-B and Bo-Bo are the Association of American Railroads (AAR) and British classifications of wheel arrangement for railway locomotives with four axles in two individual bogies. They are equivalent to the B′B′ and Bo′Bo′ classifications in the UIC system. The arrangement of two, two-axled, bogies is a common wheel arrangement for modern electric and diesel locomotives.

GWR 6800 Class 6880 <i>Betton Grange</i> New-build British 4-6-0 locomotive

No.6880 Betton Grange is a steam locomotive which is under construction as a "new-build" project, originally based on the Llangollen Railway in Denbighshire, Wales, then subsequently at Tyseley Locomotive Works. Described as "building the 81st Grange", the project started in 1998, and the locomotive was earlier expected to be operational by 2013, but subsequently by Autumn 2021, which was then pushed back to 2024. It was expected to be launched under steam in a private member event in January 2024 but was postponed a week before the event. All of the original GWR 6800 Class Grange locomotives were withdrawn for scrap by the end of 1965; this project is a creation, from an assemblage of original GWR and newly manufactured components, of a member of this class.

The GCR Class 2 steam locomotive was derived from a Kitson (Leeds) built/Thomas Parker designed prototype 4-4-0 locomotive No. 561, exhibited in Manchester in 1887. The design lead to the production of a series of express steam locomotives built between 1890 and 1894 for use on the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway, later the Great Central Railway. The last batch of six, built 1894, had larger bearings for the coupled wheels, coil springs for the driving axle and was classified 2A.
