Ballybrown GAA club is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Ballybrown, County Limerick, Ireland. The club fields teams in both hurling and Gaelic football. In 2018, Ballybrown fielded teams at Senior, Junior A and Junior B in hurling, while also a team at Junior A in football. Ballybrown's biggest rivals are neighbours Patrickswell, the two clubs sharing 22 senior titles between them.

The club have two pitches in the village of Clarina. One pitch is to the north, towards Tervoe and one to the South, towards Elm Park and Breska Beg.[ citation needed ]

History

Ballybrown was founded in 1890. [1]

Ballybrown are the only Limerick club to have won Munster titles in both hurling and football, a feat achieved in 2018.[ citation needed ] Having won the Limerick Junior B City title, the team progressed to win county honors in late 2017, beating Castletown-Ballyagran in a replay. This was the fourth round in succession that the club had advanced via replay. The team had an unbeaten streak, winning City B league honors, County B League honors before winning the City B Championship and County B Championship. All games played in the Munster Junior B competition were played in Knockaderry GAA in County Limerick.[ citation needed ]

This title added to the Munster Senior Hurling Honours won in 1989 on the back of a period where the club won the Limerick Senior Hurling title in 1989 and 1991. After their first county and Munster title success of 1989, Ballybrown contested the 1990 All Ireland Senior Club final, losing to Ballyhale Shamrocks (Kilkenny), by a goal, on St. Patrick's Day in Croke Park. Patrickswell beat Ballybrown in their most recent county hurling final in 2016.[ citation needed ]

Ballybrown have been a senior club for the majority of recent years.[ when? ] The club were relegated from Senior hurling in 2005, but secured their return to the top tier having won the 2012 Intermediate Championship. This followed a number of final and semi-final defeats. They've remained a senior club since, contesting a number of quarter finals as well as a semi final (2016) and final (2016).[ citation needed ]

Ballybrown's underage teams have reached Premier finals in hurling, losing to Kilmallock in 2009 U21 Premier final. In football, Fr Caseys defeated them in the 2012 Premier Minor Football final.[ citation needed ]

In hurling, Ballybrown won the 2019 Limerick Minor Premier Hurling Championship, which added to the U21 'A' title secured earlier in that year. In 2020, the club secured back-to-back Limerick Minor Premier Hurling Championship titles, defeating neighbours Mungret St. Paul's at the Gaelic Grounds.[ citation needed ]

Gary Kirby is an Irish hurling manager and former player. He was named in a list of the "125 greatest stars of the GAA" in 2009, in which he was described as "one of the best players never to win an All-Ireland senior medal". As a centre-forward, his playing career at club level was with Patrickswell and at inter-county level with Limerick. He was a key member of the latter team during the resurgence of the 1990s and collected two Munster titles, two National Hurling League titles and four All-Star awards.

South Liberties is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in County Limerick, Ireland. The club is based in the parish of Donoughmore-Knockea-Roxboro, on the southern outskirts of Limerick City and is affiliated to the East Board of Limerick GAA. It is one of the oldest clubs in the country, founded in 1884, the same year as the GAA. South Liberties' home ground in Ballysheedy is called Dooley Park, in memory of one of the club's greatest players. The club has won many county titles during its history, most notably seven Limerick Senior Hurling Championships; in 1888, 1889, 1890, 1972, 1976, 1978 and 1981. The club currently fields teams in the Senior hurling and Junior Gaelic football championships in Limerick.

Glin GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in Glin, County Limerick, Ireland. Glin GAA club was founded in 1898 under the name of Glin Emmetts, in commemoration of Robert Emmett who played a major role in the 1798 rebellion a century earlier. The club's rivals include Fr. Caseys, Newcastle West and as of 2009, Mountcollins.

Claughaun GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) club based in St Brigid's parish on the southside of Limerick City, Ireland. The club was founded in 1902, in the Poulin/Pennywell area of St John's parish. It fields teams in competitions organised by the within Limerick County Board and has won several county titles in both hurling and Gaelic football. The club grounds are located on the Childers Road. The club was relegated to intermediate status in both football and hurling following the 2010 championships. Clauaghaun returned to the Limerick Senior Football Championship after winning the 2020 Limerick Intermediate Football Championship.

Na Piarsaigh is a Gaelic Athletic Association club situated on the north side of Limerick City, Ireland. It was founded in 1968. Following their 2-8 to 2-6 victory in the 2022 Limerick Intermediate Football Championship over Dromcollogher Broadford, Na Piarsaigh are one of four dual senior clubs in hurling and Gaelic football in Limerick. As of 2024, the club fields five adult teams three in hurling and two in football, the most of any club in Limerick.

The 2018 Limerick Senior Hurling Championship was the 124th staging of the Limerick Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Limerick County Board in 1887. The group stage placings were confirmed on 21 November 2017. The championship began on 20 April 2018 and ended on 27 October 2018.

The 2020 Limerick Senior Hurling Championship was the 126th staging of the Limerick Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Limerick County Board in 1887. The original championship draw took place on 16 December 2019, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic the draws for a rescheduled championship took place on 24 June 2020 with a new format being adopted. The championship began on 23 July 2020 and ended on 19 September 2020.

Aidan O'Connor is an Irish hurler. At club level, he plays with Ballybrown, while he is also a member of the Limerick senior hurling team. He usually lines out as a forward.

The 2023 Limerick Senior Hurling Championship was the 129th staging of the Limerick Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Limerick County Board in 1887. The draws for the group stage pairings took place on 3 February 2023. The championship ran from 4 August to 28 October 2023.
